After Michael Mancienne and Jacopo Sala, Turkish winger Gökhan Töre has become the third Chelsea player to join German club Hamburger SV, signing a three-year deal this evening.
The 19 year-old returned from international duty, where he had been with the senior Turkish squad under Guus Hiddink, to his native Germany in Cologne before travelling to Hamburg for a medical examination today.
Chelsea are believed to have received in the region of £1m for Töre, who becomes Frank Arnesen’s third capture since starting his new career in late May.
Speaking about his new signing, the Dane had this to say to HSV.de:
Töre is a young and extremely talented player. He’s left-footed and can play on both flanks. Furthermore he’s a physically strong player with good vision. We’ll give him the time, he’ll need to continue his development.”
The player, meanwhile, is looking forward to taking the next step:
“I’m looking forward to joining Hamburg, it’s a club with a great tradition, and is located in a great city. I’ll do my best for the club.”
The news comes as a blow to Blues supporters who watched the young winger develop nicely last season in Steve Holland’s reserve team, rounding out his game to improve his end product and teamwork.
He played a crucial role in their run to the Barclays Premier Reserve League title and in the eyes of many deserved a shot in the first team squad for 2011-12.
Instead, he returns to Germany some two and a half years after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent a decade in his formative years. He played 21 youth team matches in London, scoring two goals, with 22 reserve appearances including four goals.
