Saville Signs New Long-Term Deal

Saville Signs New Long-Term Deal

George Saville, Chelsea’s young versatile midfielder, revealed on Twitter this afternoon that he has signed a new long-term deal with the club.

The 18 year-old has signed a four-year contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2015. It’s a big show of faith and commitment from the club to a player who continues to develop and impress.

In his eleven appearances for Dermot Drummy’s reserve team so far this season, Saville has lined up in all three central midfield positions used in their regular 4-3-3 formation as well as spending a fair chunk of time playing in the centre of defence.

A former left-back as a schoolboy, George’s versatility has been an undoubted asset to each of his coaches as he’s moved through the ranks at the club but an ever-emerging aspect of his game is his comfort in possession.

Watch any of the reserve matches played so far this season and you’ll typically see him stride languidly through the middle of the park, able to shift the ball past opponents with a drop of the shoulder or with quick feet before moving it on in simple but intelligent fashion.

It might not always be spectacular and may rarely capture the attention but it’s a solid fundamental part of the way Chelsea look to play at all levels and Cobham staff are evidently enamoured with his play, certainly enough to offer improved terms and a stay at the club until just after his 22nd birthday.

George becomes the third member of his scholarship class to put pen to paper on a lengthy renewal this season, following on from Josh McEachran and Billy Clifford. With Sam Hutchinson’s deal being completed last week too, it continues to be an exciting time for youngsters at the club.

Congratulations George.
