The Loan Report: October 10-16

Chelsea’s army of loanees picked up where they left off before the international break upon returning to club action this weekend, with another bunch of goals to bring you and a whole lot more besides.

Headliners

The first of those goals was scored by Lucas Piazon, who helped Fulham to a 4-2 win away to Barnsley. It was a first victory in six games for the West London side, who are still without the services of the injured Tomas Kalas.

Also on the scoresheet was Alex Kiwomya, who has impressively been able to overcome a dislocated shoulder not just to return in less than a month, but to score upon his return too. His neatly-taken effort at Notts County on Saturday helped to secure a point for Crewe Alexandra.

Lewis Baker, meanwhile, scored for the fifth successive Vitesse Arnhem game and it came courtesy of yet another free kick; his third of the season. Saturday evening’s effort means he has six goals in ten games so far this season.

Matt Miazga was also handed his first start and both loanees played well (Nathan was an unused substitute) but a pair of late goals allowed AZ to steal an undeserved point as the match finished 2-2.

Staying in the Netherlands, Bertrand Traore only needed an hour of Ajax’s trip to ADO Den Haag to score, helping them to a six successive Eredivisie victory.

England

Patrick Bamford got ten minutes as a substitute in Burnley’s defeat at Southampton, Nathan Aké was an unused substitute for Bournemouth as they hammered Hull City 6-1, Kenedy wasn’t selected for Watford away to Middlesbrough, and Loic Remy remains injured.

In the Championship, Kasey Palmer played 70 minutes of Huddersfield’s Yorkshire derby at home to Sheffield Wednesday, going close to scoring once but otherwise finding himself frustrated without possession.

Christian Atsu played 72 minutes of Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Brentford and had a hand in their second goal as his goal-bound shot was saved before Dwight Gayle tucked home the rebound. Izzy Brown, meanwhile, played 88 minutes and picked up a yellow card in Rotherham’s 3-1 defeat at Norwich.

Tammy Abraham scored twice on his full England Under-21 debut earlier in the week but his return to Bristol City duty was a quieter affair as they went down 2-1 in the Severnside derby away to Cardiff. He had one or two sniffs of goal but manager Lee Johnson admitted that was he left too isolated by the rest of his team-mates when discussing the defeat after the match.

In League One, Charlie Colkett played the full ninety minutes to help Bristol Rovers beat Gillingham 2-1, whilst Jake Clarke-Salter was an unused substitute. Colkett claimed an assist for Chris Lines with a smart return pass into his marauding path to set him clear on goal for what was the equaliser.

In League Two, Jordan Houghton got another full ninety minutes at the base of Doncaster’s midfield to help them to a 1-0 win over Colchester United and keep them firmly in second place in the table. Jamal Blackman and Wycombe drew 1-1 away to Mansfield Town, but Alex Davey missed out on Crawley’s defeat at Cheltenham through illness, with Mitchell Beeney an unused substitute.

Crawley manager Dermot Drummy this week indicated that he would be looking to sign Davey on a permanent basis in January if the deal was right for all parties. Whilst the young centre-back hasn’t been a regular in the team, he has performed admirably more often than not when given the opportunity and the chance to continue working with the former Chelsea academy coach would be a positive step at this stage of his career.

Dion Conroy was absent from Aldershot’s FA Cup exit at home to Eastbourne Borough whilst Nathan Baxter played twice as Met Police lost to Worthing and drew with Lowestoft Town.

Germany

It hadn’t been the best October so far for Andreas Christensen, with mistakes and plenty of goals being conceded both for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Denmark, but Saturday saw them get back on track with a clean sheet in a goalless draw at home to Hamburg.

There was also a positive draw for Michael Hector and Eintracht Frankfurt; the Jamaican international played 70 minutes in the middle of a back three to help his side to a 2-2 draw at home to Bayern Munich.

Baba Rahman started and played the full match for Schalke away to his former club Augsburg and that too finished all square at 1-1.

Spain

Paco Jemez is no more at Granada, with the maverick coach dismissed from his post and replaced by Lucas Alcaraz. He recalled both Victorien Angban and Jeremie Boga to the match squad for the trip to Atlético Madrid but, whilst Angban got 64 minutes, Boga was an unused substitute in a heavy 7-1 defeat.

It didn’t get much better over in Betis, where birthday boy Charly Musonda stayed on the bench for the duration of their 6-1 humbling at home to Real Madrid.

Italy

There was 90 minutes for Juan Cuadrado for Juventus in a 2-1 win over Udinese but Mario Pašalić is still awaiting his Milan debut, remaining an unused substitute away to Chievo.

Netherlands

Danilo Pantic was suspended for Excelsior’s home defeat to Roda this weekend.

Belgium

Excel Mouscon remain unbeaten with Matej Delač in goal as they drew 2-2 with Genk on Saturday. Islam Feruz was an unused substitute, whilst Cristian Cuevas didn’t make STVV’s matchday squad at home to Westerlo.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Alanyaspor bounced back from a heavy 5-0 defeat last time out to claim a respectable point in a 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce. The Nigerian played the full match at centre-back.

Brazil

Wallace was an unused substitute as Gremio beat Atlético Paranaense on Saturday.

Colombia

Joao Rodriguez remains absent from the Santa Fe first team picture and will this week pass the two-month mark since he was last involved.
