The Loan Report: October 30 – November 5

This week’s Loan Report isn’t headlined by goalscorers, but by international call-ups. Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek both received their first calls to the senior England squad this week, and both richly deserve the accolade.

Headliners

Anyone who has watched Chelsea’s development squads in recent years will have been easily able to identify their potential, and the pair have excelled for the Three Lions at junior age levels, and will now make the step up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the November friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Both have been in good form this season – Abraham at Swansea in particular – and it’s another landmark reached as they continue to battle for a long-term career at Chelsea. They endured a frustrating weekend on the pitch – Abraham and Swansea were beaten 1-0 at home by Brighton, whilst Loftus-Cheek was very quiet for Crystal Palace in defeat at Wembley against Tottenham – but the next fortnight will be another great experience for the pair of them.

There were three more goals on the pitch though, taking the running tally for the campaign up to 30, as Jordan Houghton and Joao Rodriguez got their names on the scoresheet. Houghton celebrated his 22nd birthday by chipping in with one of six for Doncaster Rovers in their FA Cup comeback win at Ebbsfleet United, whilst Rodriguez grabbed his third goal in four appearances for Mexican Liga Ascensco outfit Tampico Madero in their 3-2 win at home to Murcielagos.

Marco van Ginkel scored his eighth of the season from the penalty spot as PSV won a ding-dong battle 4-3 against FC Twente, for whom Cristian Cuevas played at left-back once again.

England

Premier League

Izzy Brown got five minutes at the end of Brighton’s 1-0 win at Abraham’s Swansea, and had a chance to impact the contest late on, but made the wrong decision and that chance went begging. Kurt Zouma, meanwhile, had a chastening afternoon as Stoke drew 2-2 at home to Leicester, in what was one of the Frenchman’s less impressive outings this season.

Championship

Despite a double helping of Championship action being on tap this week, there was frustratingly little action for Chelsea’s army of loanees in England’s second tier. The best of the involvement came at Hull, where Michael Hector and Fikayo Tomori started in their midweek defeat to Middlesbrough, who were without Lewis Baker again, whilst Tomori and Ola Aina played ninety minutes in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Sheffield United as Hector missed out through suspension after an 83rd-minute red card against Boro.

Jamal Blackman was absent for the Blades in that one after being stretchered off injured on Tuesday at Queens Park Rangers. A defensive miscommunication just four minutes into the match not only handed Idrissa Sylla the only goal of the game, but it brought a premature end to Blackman’s evening, and the big goalkeeper is now back at Chelsea receiving treatment on his back. Having initially received his opportunity due to an injury to Simon Moore, he could now have a battle on his hands to reclaim the starting gloves from that same player, who is fit again and has deputised ever since.

Iké Ugbo played 67 minutes for Barnsley away to Burton Albion on Tuesday but was an unused substitute on Saturday at home to Birmingham City, for whom Jeremie Boga only played fifteen minutes after not getting on the pitch at all in their midweek defeat to Brentford. Tomas Kalas, meanwhile, was substitutes at half time in Fulham’s 2-0 defeat at home to Bristol City and was then left out of their reverse at Wolves by the same scoreline three days later.

League One

Jay Dasilva claimed an assist as Charlton beat Truro City 3-1 in the FA Cup First Round.

League Two

Brad Collins recorded a third clean sheet in five outings on Saturday to help Forest Green Rovers past Macclesfield 1-0 in the FA Cup. He was also in goal for the Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Swansea City’s Under-21s in midweek.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter was in fine form for Woking in their 1-1 FA Cup draw against League One outfit Bury. The 18 year-old was also this week voted as his club’s Player of the Month and also sat down with the Non League Podcast for a chat about his career and season to date.

Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town were narrowly beaten 1-0 at Hampton & Richmond on Saturday.

Netherlands

Vitesse endured a frustrating week, losing 2-0 at home to Zulte Waregem in the Europa League and then drawing 0-0 with PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie. Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga played every minute of both matches, whilst Mason Mount was the best player on the pitch in the former and, despite not starting the latter, was introduced by manger Henk Fraser after 35 minutes in a tactical change.

Charlie Colkett didn’t get on the pitch at all, continuing a concerning trend for him, but Mount caught the eye yet again, with VI claiming he has ‘everything required to become a sensation’.

Todd Kane was an unused substitute as Groningen lost 2-1 at Heracles.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played the full ninety minutes as Waasland-Beveren beat Mouscron 2-0.

France

Nathan was not involved in Amiens’ 1-1 draw at Montpellier.

Russia

Mario Pašalić played 57 minutes of Spartak Moscow’s 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League and then played the final quarter of an hour in the league in versus Ufa on Sunday.

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for FC Rostov.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo played ninety minutes as Kasimpasa and Bursaspor shared a 2-2 draw.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic was an 82nd-minute substitute as Partizan Belgrade beat Skenderbeu 2-0 in the Europa League and was then unused away to Macva on Sunday.
