A bunch of young Championship teenagers lead the way in this week’s Loan Report; four England youth internationals, four more goals, and a hell of a lot of promise.
Headliners
The League Cup often provides opportunity for the next generation of academy talent to step up and get their feet wet in professional football. Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, Kasey Palmer and Trevoh Chalobah have all however jumped in at the deep end, starting the season with regular playing time in England’s second tier, and all four of them used their accelerated progress to full benefit in midweek a splash in the cup.
Tomori and Mount accounted for the goals as Derby won 2-0 at League Two side Oldham; Tomori’s first-half opener had originally been credited as an own goal, before being later overturned, but the second was all Mount with a glorious curling effort into the bottom corner.
In between those goals, Palmer found the back of the net for the first time in Blackburn Rovers colours during a 5-1 hammering of Carlisle United. His goal was the product of a defensive mistake, but he took it expertly nonetheless, and has already forged a strong relationship with fellow forwards Adam Armstrong and Bradley Dack.
Chalobah’s midweek wasn’t quite as successful, as he missed a penalty in a shootout that saw Ipswich Town knocked out by Exeter City, but he bounced back in style at the weekend to score his first professional goal against Aston Villa.
The weekend, conversely, was tougher for the other midweek goalscorers. Tomori and Mount were on the losing end of a 2-1 scoreline away to Millwall, and Palmer was quieter in Blackburn’s 1-0 win at Hull.
England
Premier League
Kenedy had what must be one of the all-time worst Premier League outings against Cardiff City on Saturday lunchtime; having failed to complete a pass in a first half in which he also should have been sent off, he proceeded to miss a stoppage-time penalty that would have won his Newcastle team the match.

Championship
Todd Kane continued in a left-wing role for Hull in their aforementioned defeat to Palmer’s Blackburn, playing all ninety minutes after being rested for the League Cup trip to Sheffield United.
The same League Cup offered chances to Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker to make their first starts for Leeds United. Baker provided an assist in the 2-1 win over Bolton, and then saw ten more minutes of action in the league against Rotherham, whilst Blackman was back on the bench.
Jay Dasilva played an hour of his debut in Bristol City’s defeat to Plymouth on Tuesday, before playing thirteen minutes in his first Championship outing at home to Middlesbrough four days later.
Reece James was rested for Wigan’s League Cup date, but was back in from first to last at home to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, having seemingly already established himself as the club’s first-choice right-back.
League One
Dujon Sterling played 67 cup minutes in midweek and another 90 against Plymouth in League One action on Saturday for Coventry, where he’s yet to truly show off his attacking ability, but is getting an education – and largely succeeding – in what it takes to defend in the senior game.
Charlie Colkett saw an hour from the bench for Shrewsbury in the League Cup, but missed out altogether on Saturday, as his team-mates drew 0-0 with Blackpool.
League Two
Nathan Baxter and Yeovil had a national stage to themselves on Tuesday as they played Aston Villa in front of the Sky Sports cameras in the League Cup. He did well despite the defeat, and then kept his first clean sheet for the Glovers on Friday, when they went up to Notts County and returned home with a 4-0 win and all three points.
Jacob Maddox played 74 minutes against Colchester and 90 minutes against Carlisle and, despite already being a regular in the team, his immediate future could come into question if manager Gary Johnson is sacked; a negative outcome in their next match against Macclesfield could see exactly that happen.
Netherlands
Vitesse’s European adventure came to a premature end when they were knocked out of the Europa League Qualifiers at the Third Round stage by Basel. A tricky draw against a strong Champions League-calibre team was made harder when Jake Clarke-Salter was sent off in the first half for a high foot; the decision was perhaps slightly harsh, but understandable in the scope of European officiating.
He was back in the team alongside goalkeeper Eduardo for Sunday’s trip to Heerenveen, when he was arguably man of the match in a 1-1 draw, winning all eight of his aerial duels in a commanding performance.
Kyle Scott’s Telstar debut amounted to just under half an hour as a substitute in their opening-day defeat to RKC.
Germany
After more than 600 days on the sidelines, Baba Rahman returned to action in a Schalke shirt, and he played all 90 minutes in their 2-0 cup win at Schweinfurt ahead of next weekend’s Bundesliga opener.
Spain
Michy Batshuayi (Valencia) and Kenneth Omeruo (Leganés) will be hoping to debut on Monday evening against Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao respectively, whilst Joao Rodriguez will hope to do the same as Tenerife travel to Gimnastíc in the second tier.
Josimar Quintero is also back in Spain, this time with third-tier Lleida, but they’re still in the late stages of their pre-season schedule.
Italy
Mario Pašalić played his first ninety minutes in an Atalanta shirt on Thursday, playing as part of a front three in a 3-4-3, and registering an assist in a 2-0 win that leaves them two matches away from qualifying for the Europa League. The Nerazzurri start their Serie A campaign on Monday night at home to Frosinone.
Ola Aina was named a substitute for Torino against Roma but was pressed into early first-half action due to an injury to Lorenzo De Silvestri. He thought he had an assist for a second-half goal scored by Iago Falque, only for VAR to rule it out for offside, but otherwise it was a very promising debut despite losing to Edin Dzeko’s last-minute golazo.

Tiemoue Bakayoko and Milan saw their fixture with Genoa postponed following the Morandi Bridge tragedy last week.
France
Matt Miazga started his Nantes career with 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat at Dijon.
Also hoping to be involved on Monday night is Victorien Angban, now clear of suspension, as Metz host Ajaccio in Ligue 2 action.
Serbia
Danilo Pantic made a goal in his 82 minutes for Partizan against Nordsjaelland in the Europa League, and they too are now one two-legged tie away from being a potential opponent for Chelsea in the group stage. Sunday’s league match against Rad was rescheduled ahead of the first leg of that tie, against Besiktas, so as to give them more time to prepare.
Scotland
Ruben Sammut was an unused substitute as Falkirk beat Rangers Under-21s in the Scottish League Challenge Cup in midweek.
Brazil
Nathan played about an hour of Atlético Mineiro’s away game at Botafogo.
