The Loan Report: September 24-30

It was a fairly quiet week overall on the loan front for Chelsea but, when headlines were made, they were made in sensational fashion. There were none bigger than those achieved by Frank Lampard and Jody Morris at Derby County in midweek, so let’s start there.

Headliners

The Rams, of course, have Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori amongst their squad for the campaign, and both were in sterling form on Tuesday night in helping pull off a famous upset by knocking Manchester United out of the League Cup at Old Trafford. Having come from behind to lead 2-1, they were pegged back in stoppage time, but held their resolved through an extended penalty shootout to emerge victorious.

Tomori had an outstanding night going up against Romelu Lukaku, most notably recovering brilliantly during the first half when a Richard Keogh error had allowed Lukaku to break free on goal, while Mount looked perfectly at home on the big stage and crashed the opening penalty of the shootout high into the top corner at the Streford End.

Their reward, as fate would have it, is a trip to Stamford Bridge in Round Four. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like either of the young loanees will be eligible to feature according to the terms of their temporary deals, but it promises to be an occasion for all involved to savour. They then came back down to earth on Saturday in a 1-0 defeat at Bolton, with Mount close but not close enough with two second-half efforts.

Elsewhere in midweek, Michy Batshuayi scored his first goal for Valencia, opening the scoring against Celta Vigo, and in doing so he became the first player this century to score in the top flights in England, France, Germany and Spain. Not bad.

He got just over an hour in the weekend win at Real Sociedad.

England

Premier League

Kurt Zouma helped Everton to a 3-0 win against Fulham in a performance that wasn’t exactly rock solid at the back, but the clean sheet will give him and the entire defence confidence moving forward.

Kenedy played ninety minutes for Newcastle against Leicester, being pressed into emergency action at left-back, and he understandably rather struggled out of position.

Championship

Tammy Abraham returned to Ashton Gate this weekend for the first time since leaving Bristol City, as he started and played ninety minutes for Aston Villa in a 1-1 draw. He did almost score, but into his own net, and had John McGinn to thank for clearing off the line and saving his embarrassment.

Jay Dasilva was an unused substitute and Tomas Kalas is out with a broken jaw.

Trevoh Chalobah got ninety minutes as Ipswich drew 2-2 at Birmingham, ceding a 2-0 lead to leave them still in search of their first win of the season, and Todd Kane was back on the right hand side as Hull drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough at the KCOM Stadium.

Reece James was in good form despite Wigan’s 1-0 defeat to Norwich, and Kasey Palmer got an hour away to Premier League side Bournemouth in the League Cup before sitting on the bench throughout Blackburn’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman were unused substitutes for Leeds United against Sheffield Wednesday, where Michael Hector played all ninety minutes at the heart of a back three.

League One

Dujon Sterling responded in the best way possible to a forgettable outing last weekend at Bristol Rovers by producing the assist – now playing at left-back – for the equaliser as Coventry drew 1-1 with Sunderland. His all-round performance got the supporters back on side too.

Iké Ugbo had a quiet 52 minutes for Scunthorpe against a Burton Albion side still missing the injured goalkeeper Brad Collins, and Shrewsbury – one win in ten – still can’t find room for Charlie Colkett.

League Two

The clean sheets have dried up for Nathan Baxter and Yeovil as they’ve started to encounter a little bit of a rough patch. A 1-1 draw at home to Milton Keynes in midweek was followed by a 3-1 reverse at Crawley, but they’ll get back on track, and Baxter himself is approaching the 100 senior matches mark a month before his 20th birthday.

Jacob Maddox got his customary ninety minutes as struggling Cheltenham were beaten 2-0 at home by Lincoln.

Netherlands

Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter started as Vitesse lost 2-1 at Feyenoord. Eduardo made a terrific second-half save to keep Vitesse on terms but, late on, he was beaten by a Robin van Persie free-kick. Clarke-Salter performed well in what was a tempestuous match that saw three players sent off.

Fankaty Dabo was an unused substitute as Sparta Rotterdam beat Dordrecht 3-2, while Kyle Scott provided the assist for the only goal as Telstar beat TOP Oss 1-0.

Spain

Kenneth Omeruo’s absence for personal reasons saw him miss Leganés’ 2-1 win over Barcelona on Wednesday, but returned to the squad for the match against Betis on Sunday, remaining on the bench throughout.

Joao Rodriguez was back on the bench for Tenerife against Cadiz after a hamstring injury had kept him out throughout September, and Josimar Quintero still can’t get into Lleida’s team.

Italy

Ola Aina played ninety minutes as Torino drew 0-0 at Atalanta and then won 1-0 at Chievo, and he was impressive in helping them to a pair of clean sheets. There’s already talk that I Granata are willing to pay the reported €10m buyout clause to ensure they get to keep him long-term.

Mario Pašalić was an unused substitute in that one for Atalanta, but got ninety minutes in a losing cause on Sunday, the Nerazzurri going down 2-0 at Fiorentina.

Tiemoue Bakayoko got ten minutes from the bench in Milan’s 1-1 draw at Empoli and none at Sassuolo on Sunday.

Germany

The same goes for Baba Rahman, who continues to miss out for Schalke after spending so long on the sidelines through injury.

France

Matt Miazga was booked in each of Nantes’ matches this week, a 2-1 defeat at Nice, followed by a far more impressive 1-1 draw away to Lyon.

Victorien Angban played all of Metz’s 1-0 defeat at home to Le Havre.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard can’t get into the Cercle Brugge team, not even in the Croky Cup, where he was an unused substitute against Beerschot Wilrijk.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut was an unused substitute as Falkirk won 2-0 at Alloa.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played ninety minutes as Partizan Belgrade fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Radnicki Nis.

Brazil

Nathan played the last quarter of an hour as Atlético-MG beat Recife 5-2.
