The Loan Report: November 19-25

Big matches call for big players, and Tammy Abraham stepped forward in the Second City Derby on Sunday, scoring and being named man of the match as Aston Villa beat Birmingham at Villa Park. Danilo Pantic also returned from injury with a pair of goals for Partizan Belgrade.

Headliners

Villa have been upwardly mobile since Dean Smith replaced Steve Bruce (with John Terry on his coaching staff), but Birmingham have been in good form themselves, making for a must-watch clash on Sunday. Abraham made his presence felt with a hard-working and persistent display in which he won and scored a penalty and was given the man of the match award by Sky pundit Danny Higginbotham.

In Serbia, Pantic put a recent spate of niggling injuries behind him by scoring twice in a resounding 6-00 win at home to Dinamo Vranje. His first goal owed much to some…generous goalkeeping, but his second to make it 3-0 was a smart low strike from the edge of the area.

England

Premier League

Elsewhere in England, Kurt Zouma lost his starting place at the back for Everton to Yerry Mina as they beat Cardiff 1-0, opening fresh doubt to his immediate future in the first-team at Goodison Park.

Kenedy and Newcastle are in action on Monday night at Burnley.

Championship

Mason Mount returned from injury to help Derby to a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, although he had one of his quieter days, and was taken off after 70 minutes. Fikayo Tomori played the first half, while Michael Hector played the full match for the hosts.

Kasey Palmer (69 minutes) and Trevoh Chalobah (90 minutes) were involved in defeats for Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town respectively, while Todd Kane came off the bench after an hour in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to turn around a deficit for Hull against Nottingham Forest. There was better news for Reece James and Wigan, who drew 0-0 against Reading.

Lewis Baker came on for the last ten minutes as Leeds beat Bristol City in a week where injury developments affected two other Blues loanees. Izzy Brown played 45 minutes for the club’s Under-23 team ten months after tearing his ACL, and is scheduled to feature for 90 minutes tomorrow as he works his way back to a full schedule. Jamal Blackman, however, suffered a broken leg in that same fixture, and will be out for the rest of the season.

Tomas Kalas played all of the defeat for City, with Jay Dasilva an unused substitute.

League One

Charlie Colkett lives! Having played in the Checkatrade Trophy over the international break, the midfielder returned to first-team action in Shrewsbury’s FA Cup replay win at Salford, playing the final ten minutes, and although he was unused at Wycombe on Saturday, his immediate future looks a little brighter for the departure of manager John Askey.

Iké Ugbo was pressed into early action for Scunthorpe at home to league leaders Portsmouth, replacing Funso Ojo after just 13 minutes of play, but the Iron lost 2-1 as they slide towards the relegation zone. Brad Collins and Burton lost 3-0 at Blackpool.

Dujon Sterling, meanwhile, is still out with injury at Coventry.

League Two

Jacob Maddox, one of Cheltenham’s standout players of late, missed their win over Newport this week due to an ankle injury. Nathan Baxter and Yeovil went down 1-0 to Macclesfield.

Spain

Leganés’ 1-0 win over Alavés on Friday night helped to keep their recent form going, form that has coincided with Kenneth Omeruo’s introduction to the team. The victory lifted them out of the relegation zone and they still possess one of La Liga’s better defensive records.

Michy Batshuayi was an unused substitute as Valencia beat Rayo Vallecano, while Joao Rodriguez played the final twenty minutes of Tenerife’s 2-1 besting of Rayo Majadahonda, and Josi Quintero was on the bench throughout as Lleida beat Sabadell.

Netherlands

Eduardo was the only Chelsea loanee involved in Vitesse’s win at Willem II, with Jake Clarke-Salter absent with an ankle injury picked up on England Under-21 duty, and Charly Musonda out until the new year with a knee issue.

Fankaty Dabo is injured again for Sparta Rotterdam and played no part against Jong PSV, and Kyle Scott got 73 minutes in Telstar’s 3-0 defeat Roda.

Italy

Mario Pašalić was a half-time substitute as Atalanta lost 3-2 at Empoli, and there’s Monday night action for Ola Aina and Torino away to Cagliari. Tiemoue Bakayoko played from start to finish in Milan’s 1-1 draw at Lazio and has certainly improved over the last month.

Germany

As usual, there was no Baba Rahman for Schalke.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard played the final fifteen minutes of Cercle Brugge’s 2-1 win at Genk.

France

Matt Miazga remains consigned to Nantes’ reserve team until he can make alternative arrangements in the January transfer window, while Victorien Angban and Metz host Gazelec Ajaccio on Monday.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut was an unused substitute as Falkirk existed the Scottish Cup at the hands of Stenhousemuir.

Brazil

Nathan was twice an unused substitute for Atlético-MG this week.
