The Loan Report: February 11-17

A quieter week on the loan front saw a rare seven days without a goal being scored. There was still plenty to catch up on, however, so away we go.

England

Premier League

Michy Batshuayi’s first start for Crystal Palace came in their FA Cup Fifth Round win at Doncaster. The Belgian played 75 minutes and it was a useful chance for him to get meaningful minutes before the resumption of league festivities.

Kurt Zouma and Kenedy both had the weekend off competitive action as Everton and Newcastle are both out of the cup.

Championship

Fikayo Tomori continues to come along very nicely at Derby, having been arguably their most impressive performer over the last month, and a mainstay in defence. He was there again for the midweek draw against Ipswich, and again at the weekend in the cup away to former club Brighton, but the Rams were unable to come away with a win in either match, and still don’t have the injured Mason Mount available.

Trevoh Chalobah was impressive at the base of midfield in that match for Ipswich, and it was a similar story on Saturday as Town picked up a second 1-1 draw of the week, this time against Stoke City. They are still nine points from safety at the foot of the table, but they’re giving it more of a fight under Paul Lambert than they did under his predecessor Paul Hurst.

Bristol City recorded a ninth successive league win on Tuesday in beating QPR but were knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday by Wolves. Tomas Kalas played every minute, Jay Dasilva featured for all but a half, and Kasey Palmer got 66 minutes in the latter as the Blues trio keep on playing a big role in the Robins’ ambitious plans for the remainder of the season.

Tammy Abraham was kept off the scoresheet as Aston Villa lost to Brentford and West Brom, marking the first time since the end of October that he has gone two consecutive matches without scoring. Michael Hector, on the other hand, guided Sheffield Wednesday to a second successive clean sheet against Millwall in midweek and, although another draw followed at Rotherham on Saturday, the 2-2 final scoreline broke that particular shutout streak.

Matt Miazga started as Reading beat Blackburn but then lost to Sheffield United; Lewis Baker was a late substitute in the former before getting all ninety minutes of the latter, and Todd Kane was rested by Hull for their midweek draw against Rotherham.

Reece James continued in midfield as Wigan also endured a midweek goalless draw, theirs against Hull at the DW Stadium, and Izzy Brown was an unused substitute for Leeds against Swansea City.

League One

Dujon Sterling claimed an assist as Coventry beat Walsall 3-0 at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday. His form has been consistent in the last three months, despite spending some time on the sidelines through injury, and it’s especially evident that he feels more comfortable in the professional game now.

Brad Collins and Burton drew 1-1 at Shrewsbury.

League Two

Having lost 4-1 to Oldham in midweek without him in goal, Yeovil restored Nathan Baxter to the starting eleven for the trip to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, but lost 3-0 to continue their slide towards the relegation zone. They’re still without Josh Grant through injury and could well do with him back, such was the impact he made in his first few appearances.

Jacob Maddox played ninety minutes in defeat for Cheltenham at Grimsby, but did offer some interesting thoughts in an exclusive interview with the Bristol Post:

Non-League

Jack Wakely (injured) and Karlo Ziger didn’t play for their respective loan clubs this week.

Italy

Ola Aina, back on the left after scoring from right wing-back last weekend, produced another impressive outing for Torino in their goalless draw away to Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli.

Tiémoué Bakayoko and Milan won 3-1 at Atalanta, where Mario Pašalić was an unused substitute, and Lucas Piazon wasn’t on Chievo’s twelve-strong bench for the defeat at Udinese.

Spain

Alvaro Morata played all of Atlético Madrid’s 1-0 win at Rayo Vallecano but he is still to score his first goal for the club since joining on loan at the end of January.

Kenneth Omeruo and Leganés were beaten 3-0 at Real Sociedad, while Josi Quintero played 41 minutes of Lleida’s 2-0 win against Atlético Levante.

Germany

Christian Pulisic looked sharp at times for Dortmund despite their midweek defeat to Tottenham in the Champions League, but his first opportunity to play and speak in front of the London media afforded him an early taste of what’s to come next season, when he joins Chelsea on a full-time basis.

Dortmund face Nurnberg on Monday night in the Bundesliga, but will be without Pulisic, who has a hamstring injury.

Netherlands

Vitesse got back to winning ways on Saturday, defeating Willem II 3-2 with Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter involved, but with Charly Musonda still a long-term absentee through injury.

Fankaty Dabo got his first ninety minutes since mid-October as Sparta Rotterdam won 4-1 at Dordrecht.

France

Baba Rahman made his Reims debut with a full outing in a 2-0 win at home to Rennes.

Victorien Angban and Metz host Beziers in Ligue 2 on Monday.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard played the last half an hour of Cercle Brugge’s 3-0 defeat at Mouscron.

Turkey

Victor Moses played 84 Europa League minutes as Fenerbahce beat Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday, and a further 82 in a league draw against Konyaspor on Saturday.

Serbia

Serbian football returned from a two-month winter hiatus, but Danilo Pantic wasn’t involved for Partizan Belgrade, his recent ankle injury ruling him out of the win at Backa Backa Palanka.

Northern Ireland

Jared Thompson and Warrenpoint lost 4-3 to Dungannon on Friday, though the young goalkeeper was in good form on an individual level.
