The Loan Report: July 20-26

The final Loan Report of the season wraps up the loose ends from the last week in England and, while action continues for a while yet in Italy, we’ll keep track of that on Twitter.

England

Premier League

Aston Villa saw out the season and achieved Premier League survival without Danny Drinkwater, who made just three appearances and played 207 minutes there.

Championship

There was far more intrigue in the second tier, which drew to a conclusion on Wednesday, and saw Conor Gallagher and Marc Guehi at Swansea take the final playoff place on goal difference. Nottingham Forest’s catastrophic collapse at home to Stoke (1-4) left the door open for the Swans to push their way in, and push they did, beating Matt Miazga’s Reading 4-1 to line up a playoff clash against Brentford. Throwing everything forward late in the day to get the fourth goal they needed to qualify on goals scored, Steve Cooper left Guehi as the team’s sole defender, and the young England Under-21 international excelled on a memorable night for the club, while Gallagher assisted the decisive goal for Wayne Routledge.

The first leg of the Brentford tie took place on Sunday evening, Swansea claiming a well-earned 1-0 win to take to West London with them. Both Chelsea boys played very well, and Gallagher had an important role in the only goal, scored by Andre Ayew.

Elsewhere, Luton and Birmingham survived without the services of the injured Izzy Brown and Jake Clarke-Salter, but a Dujon Sterling-less Wigan succumbed to relegation as their twelve-point deduction ripped them out of mid table and into League One.

Trevoh Chalobah was finally handed a start at centre-back for Huddersfield as a last-minute injury replacement away to Millwall and, while a young Terriers team lost 4-1, he showed why so many people consider his long-term future to be at that position.

Italy

After another midweek substitute appearance for Inter, Victor Moses made the most of a weekend start away to Genoa, assisting Alexis Sanchez for their second goal in a 3-0 win that kept their Serie A title hopes alive a little while longer.

Davide Zappacosta also claimed an assist as Roma battered SPAL 6-1 then sat on the bench on Sunday in a win against Fiorentina.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon will be playing Europa League football at Rio Ave next season after helping them to a final-day 2-0 win at Boavista, while Famalicao could only draw 3-3 at Maritimo. He played his part in their opening goal with a cross that led to the assist.
