A Date With Destiny?

Last seasons victory at Old Trafford was the turning point, Chelsea went to Manchester at a similar time of the season and victory was arguably the difference in finishing the season as Champions. Double-winning Champions.

This Premier League season, however, has been very bizarre to say the least. Chelsea are currently on course to reach the lowest amount of total points gained since Roman Abramovich took over in 2003 and Manchester United have really struggled away from home. Proven by the fact they have won more Champion League games than away games this season, quite an achievement.

Arsenal haven’t invested enough in their squad, a shock defeat to Birmingham in the League Cup final really knocked them and their best chance to win the title for a considerate amount of seasons has all but vanished.

After the first six games of the Premier League season, Chelsea were breath-taking and started the season like they finished the previous.  However, a turbulent few months which began with a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City led Chelsea to a mid-season breakdown including defeats to Birmingham, Wolves and most unforgettably Sunderland.

Not only that but failing to score in all three of these games signalled that something wasn’t quite right. Drogba, Malouda and Anelka couldn’t find a goal between them and with Lampard’s injury and subsequent lack of fitness the end of 2010 couldn’t have come quick enough.

Then the change of the year saw a revival for Chelsea. Although it started slowly the signing of Fernando Torres and, in particular, David Luiz was a major factor in Chelsea’s recent resurgence.  Luiz’s goals contributed to the wins at home to both Manchester clubs and at a time that many people thought Chelsea weren’t even going to reach a Champions league spot. How things have changed.

Many would believe the signing of Luiz was pinnacle; he’s not only a quality footballer who has impressed the whole division, he is an absolute character (http://yhoo.it/h8hKtP – recent interview).  Members of the dressing room admit the atmosphere has freshened up and has helped take the pressure off even the strongest of characters, such as John Terry and Frank Lampard.  When Terry claims Luiz will be a future Chelsea captain, it shows the amount of respect the whole team has for him.

It can also be argued that the signing of Torres has significantly benefited the squad, not with necessary what the blues expected though. When Chelsea’s strike force was struggling to score goals, variation was needed. There were many shouts from Chelsea fans to give Sturridge three or four starts to prove his worth.

Instead, with pressure from the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres, a long-term target of Abramovich’s, was bought for a British record transfer fee of £50m.  Some say this heaped pressure onto Torres after struggling to find his form for the previous 18 months and his price tag wouldn’t help. In fact, it’s helped Chelsea as a team and in particular the ever maturing Didier Drogba.

Drogba’s form had tailed off, yet he’d started every game. Apart from his spectacular goal against Bolton Chelsea hadn’t seen half the player they had last season. Being 33 and defeating the bout of Malaria he recently had, could his body physically take the strain of leading the line week in week out? Questions were raised.

At first the Torres signing will have startled Drogba but now provides him a much needed rest. Now Chelsea can boast an incredible squad of strikers and in turn competition for places which, if managed correctly, will only improve Chelsea as team. But there are still unanswered questions; `can Drogba and Torres play together?’ and if not, `can one sit on the bench whilst the other plays?’.  Debates are welcomed.

This Sunday is sure to bring a lot of nerves, tension yet excitement. The Champions were written off two months ago by many people, including most realistic Chelsea fans, but the belief is still within the camp and that’s what counts. Carlo needs to picks a team suitable of winning at Old Trafford with the right balance.

It’s not a time to see if Drogba and Torres can play together, it’s time to play a TEAM that will connect and if that means leaving Torres out then so be it. Although I’m sure he will finally want to win a domestic title after so many years of disappointment at Liverpool.

Had Scolari Completely Lost It?

Recently Luiz Filipe Scolari finally broke his silence on his time as Chelsea manager, a silence that many must feel really didn’t need to be broken.

He released an attack on the dressing room culture that was present during his time in charge, saying how “it was difficult to control the dressing room” as players like Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack caused him problems due to rivalry for places in the starting line up.

In Scolari’s interview with TB Arena Sport TV, he stated how Deco and Ballack didn’t speak at all following the signing of the Portuguese midfielder, and also how Didier Drogba had demanded a starting place regardless how well fellow striker Nicholas Anelka had performed in his absence.

He continued to explain how he also attempted to swap Drogba for Brazilian striker Adriano, but that Roman Abramovich had vetoed his attempt to do so.

When comparing both players over the last two seasons, Chelsea fans must thank Abramovich for his fine judgement as we saw the Ivorian score 47 goals in his last 80 games for Chelsea, winning both the Premier League and FA Cup last season under the guidance of Carlo Ancellotti, and also the FA Cup the season before under temporary manager Guus Hiddink.

Adriano on the other hand has gone from being held as one the best strikers in the world, to having his contract terminated by AS Roma after periods in Brazil and in Italy, and had struggled to find suitors after his departure.

He has now recently signed for Corinthians, however to say that he would have been more suited for Chelsea than Didier Drogba speaks volumes about Scolari’s judgement as a manager.

Although Scolari had won the World Cup with Brazil, it was a team that possessed huge quality with the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho leading the front line, and so in my mind this makes the achievement slightly less impressive as with a forward line like that at your disposal, it would have been harder not to achieve success.

Many Chelsea supporters see Scolari’s tenure at the club as a failure, and now revealing his desire to make decisions like swapping one of the best strikers in the world with someone who has totally gone off the radar of world football shows just one reason why.

However, to avoid further tarnishing his already diminished reputation in English football, he must keep his ideas for Chelsea to himself as they only further prove just how bad an appointment he was for the club.

Chelsea FC – Champs 09-10

Carlo’s Chelsea have won the league at the first attempt, scoring an incredible 103 league goals this season.

Frank Lampard had his best season ever, Didier Drogba scored more goals than any other season and won the golden boot, and Petr Cech has won the golden gloves.

We’ve won the Community Shield, The FA Youth Cup, The Premiership and now have the FA Cup final to play.

We’ve beaten every one of the ‘big four’ home and away, we’ve hit seven goals, three times, and eight once.

This has truly been a special season already, and in Carlo we trust to finish the job and take our first title.

Congratulations to all at Chelsea involved in this fantastic title win. We love you all.

Deadly Drogs Does It Again

Chelsea laboured to a 2-0 win at Wolves thanks to another brace from Didier Drogba, taking his season total to 25 in all competitions.

However, Manchester United’s crushing defeat at Goodison Park now sees Chelsea open up a four point lead atop the English Premier League.

Paulo Ferreira made a rare league start at right back, whilst Florent Malouda started on the left of the midfield four. Drogba and Anelka were paired together in attack, supported by Joe Cole.

Wolves showed decent attacking impetus in the opening exchanges, Kevin Doyle forcing Cech to save twice. The first was a comfortable stop, the second an excellent one at his near post. In between, Michael Ballack volleyed over the bar.

With six minutes left in the first half though, Chelsea took the lead and to be fair, it was harsh on Wolves. Yuri Zhirkov played a delightful one two with Ballack, before crossing to Drogba to slide home at the back post.

Cech made a super stop early in the second half, reacting brilliantly to stop a stinging Guedioura volley at the back post. A minute later, the Blues lost Zhirkov to injury, his replacement Bruma moving to right back with Ferreira moving across to the left. Losing the Russian would be a huge blow against Inter.

Cech made another great save before Drogba closed the game out, latching on to a long ball from the Chelsea keeper, proceeding to round the Wolves keeper and easily finish.

Professional from Chelsea, but it’ll have to be something more to beat Inter in midweek.

Drogba Does It Again

Chelsea went back to the top of the English Premier League with a resounding 2-0 win at home to Arsenal.

Didier Drogba was the chief destroyer with two well taken goals, whilst the defence plus Petr Cech were outstanding in Chelsea’s gallant victory.

Florent Malouda was preferred to Deco and Joe Cole as the support to Drogba and Nicolas Anelka in attack, whislt Ashley Cole returned to the side at left back in place of Yuri Zhirkov.

As mentioned in many circles, Drogba is an alarmingly regular goal scorer against the Gunners and it took just seven minutes for him to find the back of the net at Stamford Bridge. Malouda’s corner was headed on by John Terry to an unmarked Drogba at the back post, who made no mistake in poking past Almunia.

Andrey Arshavin should have equalised for the away side after a long ball dropped over the head of Branislav Ivanovic, but Cech made a brilliant save with his left foot to deny the Russian.

A wonderful counter attack saw Chelsea double their lead. Frank Lampard surged through the midfield before spreading the ball wide right to Drogba. The Ivorian cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable left footed shot past the stranded Almunia.

Cech made two further saves in the second half, firstly to deny Fabregas and then preventing Bendtner getting to a loose ball. Drogba smashed a long range free kick against the crossbar in search of his hat-trick, but it was not to be.

Likewise, Arsenal’s attacking efforts weren’t good enough, pretty much ending their title hopes for yet another season.

Hull Of A Battle

Chelsea came from behind to secure a point at the KC Stadium against Hull City, however it could be considered two points lost against the relegation battlers.

Steven Mouyokolo headed the opening goal for Hull, before Didier Drogba equalised with a free kick on his return to the side.

Drogba was paired with Nicolas Anelka in attack, with the 4-4-2 diamond returning to accommodate him. Ballack was holding, Deco was at the head and Malouda and Lampard played to either side. Yuri Zhirkov was the left back replacing Ashley Cole.

Lampard tested the in form Boaz Myhill with a stinging early strike that was well saved. Michael Ballack should have scored a header from a beautifully flighted Ivanovic cross after 25 minutes, but headed straight at the Hull keeper.

The home side took the lead from a set piece just on the half hour. Stephen Hunt whipped it in and Mouyokolo was criminally unmarked and able to head home with aplomb.

Chelsea were level before half time, thanks to Didier Drogba’s superb free kick. Anelka was the man brought down, slightly left of centre and about 25 yards out. Drogba beautifully curled his shot around the wall and into the bottom corner to equalise.

Myhill was sharp in saving headers from Drogba and John Terry in the second half whilst Joe Cole came on for the last 20 minutes, to little effect. Myhill made an outstanding save very late on to deny substitute Daniel Sturridge, but the cutting edge wasn’t there on the night and Hull battled hard for their point, at a ground where few will win.

Arsenal are next up in a huge match this weekend, which being at Stamford Bridge, should hopefully see normal service resumed.

Blues Looking To Breach Hull

Chelsea’s rescheduled match with Hull City takes place tonight, after our January 9 match fell victim to the extraordinary weather of the start of the year. Phil Brown’s side are involved in a mighty relegation scrap and sit second from bottom, Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea are five points clear at the top of the league.

Didier Drogba returns to the squad tonight, having returned to England after international duty. He has 14 league goals this season and at the time of his departure was leading the golden boot race.

Wayne Rooney scored seven times in Drogba’s absence and leads the way now, with 20 league goals. Jermain Defoe has 15 whilst Darren Bent has 14, neither of whom has been away for a month during the season.

Stephen Hunt is the key man for Hull City. His infamy with Chelsea fans only increased when he scored at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season, one of his six league goals this season. There was significant interest from fellow relegation battlers Wolves throughout the transfer window, however he remains at the KC Stadium until the season’s end at least.

Hunt and Drogba were the scorers in the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge way back in August. Drogba’s first was a brilliant free kick the second a delicate chip over Hull keeper Boaz Myhill from the byline very late on. Our last match at the KC Stadium was in October 2008 under Luiz Felipe Scolari, where Chelsea won 3-0.

Ladbrokes are offering 7/1 on a Hull home win and 7/2 on the draw. Chelsea are yet again unbackable, paying 2/7 for the win.
