The Loan Report: October 1-6

The Loan Report has been headlined for most of this season by Iké Ugbo and Conor Gallagher, and this week is no different, as they each found the back of the net again to keep their stars burning bright.

Headliners

It’s been a strange week for Ugbo in the wake of stories claiming that Roda have been using the money sent to them by Chelsea as a salary contribution to pay their first-team squad rather than the loanee, such is the state of their financial problems, but all the young forward can do is demonstrate his value on the pitch. His fifth goal of the season helped to beat Telstar 2-1 for just their second win of the campaign and, even if things are sorted out off the pitch, it’s the sort of form that could net him a move to a higher standard in January.

Gallagher, meanwhile, has taken to Championship football like a duck to water and scored his fourth goal for Charlton Athletic in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Fulham. It came in typical fashion, as he found time and space in the box to arrive on to a knocked-down cross and drive home a confident first-time finish.

The Addicks have been one of the best surprise stories of the season to date, sitting tenth after eleven games following promotion last season, and it’s in no small part thanks to the contributions of a player in Gallagher who has been outstanding so far.

Over in Brazil, Nathan has been slowly earning more regular playing time for Atlético Mineiro, and parlayed that into a goal on Sunday night when he opened the scoring away to Palmeiras in an eventual 1-1 draw.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater is still injured. This will be something of a theme throughout the rest of this report.

Championship

Good things come to those who wait, and for Trevoh Chalobah and Huddersfield, a win has been a long time coming. The first of the season came at Stoke in midweek, quickly followed by another over Hull four days later, with the England Under-21 international a staple in holding midfield for 75 minutes of both victories.

There was a rare start for Jake Clarke-Salter as Birmingham travelled to Wigan in midweek, and he came away with some credit on an otherwise forgettable night for the Blues. He was back on the bench against Middlesbrough, while Dujon Sterling played no part for the Latics in either of their matches this week.

Izzy Brown’s work at Luton continues to impress; 84 minutes in midweek at the top of a midfield diamond(ish) shape against Millwall was followed by just under half an hour from the bench in a defeat at Derby, but he’s shown his value to the Hatters, who are handling him perfectly at this stage of his injury-affected career.

Matt Miazga returned to the Reading team after a few weeks out injured, but couldn’t help them avoid a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City on Saturday.

League One

Richard Nartey helped keep a clean sheet as Burton won 3-0 at Milton Keynes, while Tranmere vs Shrewsbury took place without either Jacob Maddox or Luke McCormick being involved.

League Two

Josh Grant played the last twelve minutes as Plymouth drew 2-2 with Scunthorpe, and came in for some supporter criticism for his part in the visitors’ last-minute equaliser.

Spain

Kenedy played 76 minutes as Getafe won 2-1 at Krasnodar in the Europa League, then the second half from the bench in a victory at Real Sociedad by the same scoreline.

Baba Rahman is still injured.

Italy

There was sad news for Davide Zappacosta this week as, just hours after returning to the Roma squad after a recent injury, he suffered a torn ACL during training that will now rule him out for most of the season.

Mario Pašalić and Atalanta lost 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League; the Croatian played all ninety minutes, before taking a rest against Lecce in Serie A action on Sunday.

Germany

Lewis Baker played 72 minutes for Fortuna Dusseldorf against Hertha BSC on Saturday before returning to Arnhem to see how Vitesse are getting on a day later.

Ethan Ampadu didn’t get on for RB Leipzig in either match this week.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko’s Monaco were beaten 3-1 at Montpellier to end their recent mini-surge in form.

Netherlands

Vitesse, still without Charly Musonda or Jamal Blackman, beat Utrecht 2-1 on Saturday to stay within three points of Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie.

Juan Castillo played ninety minutes as Jong Ajax beat FC Eindhoven 6-0 in the second tier.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon was an unused substitute for Rio Ave in their 1-1 draw at Portimonense in the Portuguese Cup.

Turkey

Victor Moses is injured.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter is injured.

Hungary

Danilo Pantic played the last eighteen minutes of MOL Fehervar’s 2-1 win against Debrecen.
