The Loan Report: July 13-19

We’re almost there; the longest season in Loan Report history has but a couple of weeks to go, but there’s still much at stake.

England

Premier League

Aston Villa’s fight against relegation looks set to finish without the services of Danny Drinkwater, as the midfielder once again missed out on selection away to Everton in midweek.

Jacob Maddox joined Southampton on loan in January with a view to a permanent move, but it was ostensibly an Under-23 deal where he could link up with family in the form of manager David Horseman. The subsequent premature end to the academy season meant he barely made an impression on the pitch for the Saints, but has clearly caught the eye ever since, as he was on the bench for the first team against Brighton on Thursday. The option to buy is likely to be in the form of a significant sell-on clause to Chelsea in lieu of an immediate fee.

Championship

The Championship season finishes this coming Wednesday night with plenty still at stake. The following all applies assuming Wigan’s appeal against a twelve-point deduction isn’t successful and happens this season, and ignores any disciplinary proceedings against other clubs that might yet affect things.

Swansea’s chase for the fourth and final playoff place continued with a draw at Nottingham Forest and a win over Bristol City. Marc Guehi continues to impress in defence while Conor Gallagher still puts in the hard work in a deeper midfield role than he was initially playing. He was almost back on the scoresheet in the second of those matches, hitting the post from distance, but their fate is not in their own hands. They must win at Reading and hope that Cardiff lose at home to already-relegated Hull.

At the other end of the table, four points from six games and a surprise win at home to West Brom has secured Huddersfield’s place in the league next season. Their recent revival came with Trevoh Chalobah’s continued deployment at right-back, where he has looked more at home than in midfield, and could offer an indication of where his development is heading next season. Their survival has been assured because, while the four teams below them could all theoretically jump above them (some with unlikely goal difference issues to address), Wigan’s impending points deduction would see them finish with a maximum of 49 points, two short of the Terriers’ 51.

Dujon Sterling is still out of action for the resurgent Latics, who put eight past Hull this week despite their off-field problems, and their fate now also relies on Luton, who are without the injured Izzy Brown for the rest of the season but are still just about alive. They face Blackburn in their final match knowing a win ensures they stay up at Wigan’s expense, even if the latter beat Fulham. A draw relies on results involving Wigan, Charlton and Barnsley going their way.

Birmingham are now safe because of Wigan; Jake Clarke-Salter is another who has been sidelined through injury, though, and missed both matches this week.

Reading’s matches have been of little consequence for a while now (some might say much longer than that), so Matt Miazga hasn’t been able to get back in the team since returning from suspension.

Italy

Round 33 of Serie A action saw Davide Zappacosta play for 25 minutes of Roma’s 2-1 win over Verona, while Victor Moses returned to Inter’s squad after injury but watched them beat SPAL 4-0 from the bench. Their respective clubs then squared off on Sunday, when Moses again came off the bench to win a late penalty for Inter to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Spain

Mallorca were relegated back to the Segunda Division in losing to Granada in midweek, and finished their campaign without Baba Rahman, who hasn’t played since late January and has made just five appearances through injury all season.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon played 88 minutes for Rio Ave in a goalless draw at Maritimo last Monday, then a full ninety against Santa Clara in another draw (2-2) five days later. They need to better Famalicao’s result next Sunday if they’re to finish fifth and take the last Europa League qualification spot.

Serbia

Finally, in transfer news, Danilo Pantic has begun pre-season in Serbia with Cukaricki, and will complete a permanent move there in the coming days or weeks.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
