Much like last week, it was a frustrating seven days for a number of Chelsea’s loan army, whilst Mario Pašalić scored again to keep his good form going for Spartak Moscow.
Headliners
Pašalić came off the bench midway through the second half of Spartak’s Moscow derby at home to CSKA on Sunday, and took his season’s tally up to five with a stoppage-time goal to seal a 3-0 win.
It was a positive end to a week that had started with half an hour from the bench in a heavy 7-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League; a result that confirmed Spartak would drop into the Europa League.
England
Premier League
There was more frustration in the Premier League, where Tammy Abraham came off the bench for Swansea to a generally positive impact, proving to be a nuisance in Wilfried Bony’s late winner, but also then missing this glorious late chance to make it 2-0.

Kurt Zouma had a torrid afternoon as Stoke were beaten 5-0 by Tottenham at Wembley, whilst Izzy Brown started for Brighton away to his former club Huddersfield, but was to end up on the losing side. Kasey Palmer missed out altogether and will not be eligible to face Chelsea this Tuesday evening either.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek played a fifth consecutive ninety minutes for Crystal Palace in a frenetic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, but it was one of his quieter outings of the campaign.
Championship
In the Championship, Jeremie Boga squared off against Tomas Kalas as Birmingham travelled to Fulham, but the Ivorian had an afternoon to forget as he spooned a second-half penalty over the crossbar and Birmingham eventually lost 1-0.
In better Fulham news, Lucas Piazon this week celebrated the completion of his rehabilitation from a broken ankle, and will be available for selection again in the very near future.

Sheffield United dropped Jamal Blackman (as well as fellow youngsters Cameron Carter-Vickers and David Brooks) for Friday’s visit of Bristol City after going three matches without a win, but the decision to scapegoat the fresh-faced Blades paid no such dividends, as City came away with a 2-1 win, leaving Chris Wilder with more decisions to make.
Hull sacked manager Leonid Slutskiy on Monday, leaving Chelsea’s three loanees at the KCOM Stadium in a little bit of limbo, but Ola Aina and Fikayo Tomori each played 90 minutes in Nigel Adkins’ first match in charge – Aina in a more advanced role – whilst Michael Hector, who missed out altogether, has previously worked under Adkins at Reading and should enjoy a positive future under him for the Tigers.
Slutskiy, meanwhile, could still be heavily involved with Chelsea’s immediate future, having been offered the Director of Football position at Stamford Bridge. Still interested in coaching first and foremost, however, it would not be a surprise to see him land at Vitesse, where Henk Fraser remains under pressure.
Back to Championship action, where Iké Ugbo played eighteen minutes of Barnsley’s 3-0 defeat to Derby, and was denied a goal by a fine save from Scott Carson, but Lewis Baker missed out again for Middlesbrough and must be recalled as early as possible when the January transfer window opens.
League One
Jay Dasilva and Charlton celebrated the 25th anniversary of the club’s return to The Valley this week, but were unable to repeat the feats achieved by their predecessors in beating Portsmouth, instead losing 1-0 in a closely-fought contest.
Jordan Houghton played ninety minutes and was booked in Doncaster’s defeat to Oxford and, with his loan deal due to expire at the end of the month, manager Darren Ferguson addressed the situation this week. A permanent move has long been mooted and would not be surprising at this stage.
Darren Ferguson confirms he will speak to #CFC about the possibility of making the Jordan Houghton deal a permanent one. #DRFC

League Two
Brad Collins saved a penalty for Forest Green Rovers at Grimsby, but was let down by his team-mates, who failed to react to the rebound and allowed Mitchell Rose to score the only goal of the game.
Collins had kept a clean sheet at Swindon earlier in the week as Rovers won 1-0 at Swindon Town to advance into Round Three of the Football League Trophy.
Non-League
Gateshead vs Woking was postponed, leaving Nathan Baxter with a weekend off, whilst Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town were beaten 4-0 at Havant & Waterlooville.
Netherlands
Vitesse’s final Europa League fixture of the season saw them claim their first win, beating Nice 1-0 on Thursday, with starts for three loanees. Mason Mount was impressive once again, but Matt Miazga struggled in a new role on the right of a defensive back three, whilst Charlie Colkett lasted just a half before withdrawing through injury. Fankaty Dabo was rested but, with Julian Lelieveld impressive in his absence, he could face some stiff competition for his position moving forwards.
Their Eredivisie fixture at Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday was postponed due to heavy snow.
Marco van Ginkel and PSV were beaten 3-0 at Ajax to re-ignite the Eredivisie title race.
Cristian Cuevas and FC Twente lost 3-2 to ADO Den Haag on Friday, whilst Todd Kane played the last three minutes of Groningen’s 2-2 draw in a blizzard away to Roda JC.
Belgium
Victorien Angban courted controversy on Friday as night as Waasland-Beveren baet Standard Liege; a tackle on Uche Agbo – a team-mate of his at Granada last season – only warranted a yellow card on the pitch, but the Belgian league have since reviewed the situation and are expected to issue a multiple-game suspension for the Ivorian midfielder, who has previously indulged in some less-than-impressive tackling, earning himself two red cards whilst on loan at Sint-Truiden during the 2014-15 campaign.

France
Nathan missed Amiens’ 2-1 defeat to Lyon through injury.
Turkey
Kenneth Omeruo played ninety minutes as Kasimpasa were beaten 3-0 at home by Trabzonspor.
Serbia
Danilo Pantic played ninety minutes for Partizan Belgrade in a 4-1 Europa League defeat to Dynamo Kyiv, but their place in the last 32 was already assured. He completed another full match on Sunday, a 2-1 defeat at Napredak, reflecting that he has forced his way into a regular starting berth over the past month.
Russia
Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for Rostov versus UFA.
Mexico
Joao Rodriguez extended his hugely successful stay at Tampico Madero until next summer, which will allow him to feature for Los Jaibos in the Mexican Liga Ascenso’s Apertura stage. He almost fired them to promotion this winter and, with him back on the books, they’ll be hopeful of going all the way this time around, whilst also retaining the option to make the deal permanent at any point between now and then.
