The Loan Report: November 13-19

The Loan Report returns from the final international hiatus of 2017 with much to talk about, not least concerning the antics of several loanees for their countries over the last fortnight.

Headliners

Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have caught the eye with Premier League opportunities at Swansea City and Crystal Palace respectively this season so far and, with England manager Gareth Southgate deprived of several significant regulars for the friendlies against Germany and Brazil, the Chelsea pair were drafted in for the first time.

They weren’t merely there to enjoy the experience though; Southgate handed them both starts against Germany, and they each did well. Abraham had two or three half chances in his hour on the pitch whilst Loftus-Cheek earned acclaim with a Man of the Match performance that got better as it went on.

Unfortunately, he suffered a back injury early in the Brazil match that curtailed his involvement, but Abraham did get on the pitch again there too, coming off the bench at the same time as Dominic Solanke, his former partner in crime in the Chelsea academy goalscoring ranks.

Loftus-Cheek was fit to resume his club duties for Crystal Palace at home to Everton on Sunday, and turned in an influential display that included an assist in a 2-2 draw, but Abraham endured a frustrating Saturday for Swansea at Burnley as a 2-0 defeat was compounded by a back injury of his own. Early reports are inconclusive but it almost goes without saying that a lengthy layoff would be terrible news.

England

Premier League

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Kasey Palmer is nearing a return from injury, after playing for Huddersfield’s Under-23 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last Monday. He’ll continue to work his way back to full fitness in the coming weeks, with manager David Wagner optimistic of being able to reintegrate him back into the first team squad in the next fortnight.

Izzy Brown’s Brighton host Kurt Zouma’s Stoke City on Monday night.

Championship

Fikayo Tomori, Ola Aina and Michael Hector all started a league match for Hull for the first time this season as the Tigers drew 2-2 with Ipswich on Saturday. The trio made up 75% of Leonid Slutskiy’s back four and it would not be a surprise to see it become commonplace over the remainder of the season.

Jamal Blackman made his return from an injury suffered at QPR before the international break to help Sheffield United beat Burton 3-1 to remain second in the league. It was a bold statement of confidence from manager Chris Wilder to return to his loanee custodian over the veteran Simon Moore, and Blackman’s performances so far have certainly warranted it.

Fulham restored Tomas Kalas to the starting eleven for the visit of Derby County; the Czech defender played 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw. There was no such luck for Iké Ugbo at Barnsley or Jeremie Boga at Birmingham, who each remained as unused substitutes this weekend, whilst Lewis Baker once again missed out on Middlesbrough’s matchday squad.

Baker now hasn’t featured in a league match for Boro since late September, a distressing development in a loan that appeared dubious in the first place. Chelsea are reportedly not planning to recall him in January but would be well advised to reconsider that stance.

League One

Jordan Houghton helped Doncaster to a 0-0 draw away to Fleetwood whilst Jay Dasilva and Charlton drew 2-2 at home to MK Dons.

League Two

Brad Collins was in goal against as Forest Green Rovers’ upswing in form continued; a 3-2 win at home to Crewe means they’ve taken 13 points from their last 15 on offer, and are slowly climbing away from the relegation zone.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter helped Woking to their biggest result for years as they went to League One Bury in an FA Cup First Round Reply and came home with a 3-0 win and a place in Round Two. Baxter’s star continues to ascend, but the Cards were held to a 1-1 draw by Maidstone on Saturday.

Jared Thompson backstopped Chippenham Town to a 2-1 win over Melksham in the Wiltshire Senior Cup in midweek, but was then on the losing side as Concord Rangers beat them 4-2 on Saturday.

Netherlands

Loanees collided at Euroborg on Sunday as Todd Kane’s Groningen welcomed Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga from Vitesse, with Charlie Colkett and Mason Mount on the bench as usual. It was another disappointing day for Vitesse though, as they lost 4-2, including a sensationally unfortunate own goal from Dabo.

Mount got ten minutes as a sub but Colkett, again, saw no action.

Marco van Ginkel captained PSV to a last-gasp win at PEC Zwolle whilst Cristian Cuevas was booked in Twente’s 4-0 defeat at home to Heerenveen.

Belgium

Victorien Angban was booked as Waasland-Beveren were beaten 3-0 at Club Brugge.

Russia

Mario Pašalić played 23 minutes as Spartak Moscow won 4-1 away to Krasnodar.

Josimar Quintero was not involved for FC Rostov. Again.

France

Nathan was an unused substitute as Amiens drew 1-1 with Monaco.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic completed ninety minutes as Partizan Belgrade won 2-0 at Javor.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Kasimpasa take on Karabukspor on Monday.

Mexico

Joao Rodriguez and Tampico Madero are in overnight action at home to Mineros in the second leg of their promotion playoff; they lost the first leg 1-0 earlier in the week.

Rodriguez did find the net last weekend away to Cafetaleros for his fourth goal in just 7 (at the time) appearances for the Mexican second tier outfit.
