The Loan Report: September 25 – October 1

We’ve had to remain patient so far this season but, on Sunday, we finally got our reward as Mason Mount scored for the first time in a Vitesse shirt. Marco van Ginkel also weighed in with an Eredivisie goal this week but, for the time being, let’s begin in Arnhem.

Headliners

It wasn’t the best week for Vitesse, who lost 3-0 away to Nice in the Europa League on Thursday, and followed that up with a 1-1 draw at home on Sunday to a Utrecht team that had been beaten 7-1 at home by PSV last weekend, but they were only able to claim that point thanks to a late goal by substitute Mount. On the pitch for a matter of moments, he popped up in the right place at the right time to apply the finish to Thomas Bruns’ low cross.

His introduction livened things up and he produced one or two other dangerous moments cutting in from the left, where he had replaced Bryan Linssen. He was also a late substitute back in Nice, whilst Charlie Colkett came off the bench in the dying embers of the Utrecht fixture. Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga played 90 minutes on each occasion with Dabo enjoying the better of the experiences overall.

Van Ginkel, meanwhile, netted from the penalty spot for the second week in success as PSV brushed Willem II aside 4-0 at the Philips Stadion. It was his fourth goal of the season, giving him the lead amongst all loanees.

England

Premier League

Despite the positive start to Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s 2017-18 on the pitch, there has been tangible frustration with his sporadic absences, and he was on the sidelines again this weekend with a minor issue that meant he missed Crystal Palace’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. He should return for England’s Under-21 fixtures over the international break but, as Palace play Chelsea upon the return of the Premier League, he’ll have gone a full month between club appearances by the time the Eagles face Crystal Palace on October 21st.

Kasey Palmer is still working his way back to full fitness at Huddersfield, but former team-mate Izzy Brown was back on the pitch for the first time since the opening day of the season, as Brighton lost to Arsenal. Pressed into duty as a lone centre-forward, Brown put in a lot of work off the ball, before being replaced on 76 minutes.

Kurt Zouma helped Stoke to a 2-1 win over Southampton whilst Tammy Abraham was quiet for Swansea in their 1-0 defeat to West Ham. Swansea have scored just three goals in seven Premier League games and Abraham has been responsible for two of them, so it’s clear they need to do more to get him the ball more often in prime scoring locations (something they’ve been generally good at producing in general).

Championship

The big loanee clash of the weekend came at the KCOMM Stadium where Michael Hector and Ola Aina, plus substitute Fikayo Tomori, took on Jeremie Boga as Hull hosted Birmingham. It was a day to forget for the visitors, under new manager Steve Cotterill, as Hull ran out resounding 6-0 winners. The most notable loanee action is in the thread below:

That came off the back of all three Chelsea players at Hull starting in their midweek defeat at home to Preston – Tomori being replaced at half time – whilst Boga was influential in helping Birmingham to a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday under then-Interim Manager Lee Carsley, who will now serve as Assistant Manager.

Tomas Kalas helped Fulham to a pair of wins away to Nottingham Forest and QPR with strong defensive displays whilst Iké Ugbo got 90 minutes for Barnsley against QPR earlier in the week before being an unused substitute in their win at Millwall on Saturday.

Jamal Blackman kept a clean sheet against the league’s most potent attack in midweek when Sheffield United beat Wolves 2-0, but he was beaten twice in a defeat at Nottingham Forest three days later. Still, The Blades sit third in the table after 11 games, with Blackman a big part of that, and he’s set to hold onto his starting position despite the return to fitness of the veteran Simon Moore.

Lewis Baker got 90 minutes for Middlesbrough in a home defeat to Norwich, and then 11 minutes as they spluttered once again on Saturday, drawing 2-2 with Brentford.

League One

Charlton picked up four points from six available on a pair of away trips this week; Jay Dasilva played every second of both the 2-2 draw at Walsall and the 3-1 win at Fleetwood, and has become a key part of a team well on the way to mounting a promotion campaign, starting ten of their eleven matches so far.

Jordan Houghton played 66 and 81 minutes respectively as Doncaster suffered back-to-back defeats against Shrewsbury and Bradford.

League Two

Following a shaky display against Swindon last Friday, Forest Green Rovers decided to go with Sam Russell in goal rather than Brad Collins for their fixtures against Cambridge and Accrington Stanley this week. They lost both, conceding four more in the process and, with 26 goals conceded, they have the most porous defence in the Football League. Something to ponder when appraising Collins’ progress so far.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter helped Woking to a 1-1 draw against Hartlepool to keep them two points from the top of the National League, whilst Jared Thompson had the weekend off with Chippenham Town out of the FA Cup already.

Netherlands

With the rest of the league covered in the Headliners section, we’re left to cover Todd Kane’s Groningen, but the full-back is still out injured.

Cristian Cuevas made his FC Twente debut as a stoppage-time substitute at home to Heracles, with clarification as to whether Chelsea still own him or not to come. For the time being, he will remain a member of the Loan Army.

France

Nathan was on the bench as Amiens hosted Lille on Saturday, but the match was suspended midway through the first half when part of a stand collapsed when Lille fans celebrated their opening goal.

Belgium

Victorien Angban celebrated his 21st birthday this week by putting in another good 90 minutes as Waasland-Beveren beat Antwerp 3-0.

Russia

Mario Pašalić put in a hard-working 90 minutes to help Spartak Moscow hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in the Champions League, and then got the last three minutes of their 2-0 victory over Ural in the League on Saturday, as Massimo Carrera rotated his squad.

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for Rostov away to SKA-Khabarovsk.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic added 15 minutes of Europa League football to his resumé as Partizan lost 3-2 to Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday; he was then not involved on Sunday against Cukaricki.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Kasimpasa lost 3-0 away to Osmanlispor on Saturday.

Mexico

Joao Rodriguez made his debut for Tampico Madero as a half-time substitute in their 1-0 defeat away to FC Juárez.
