The goals continue to flow for Chelsea’s Loan Army and, indeed, we’re slightly ahead of the early-season total from this point a year ago. A pair of talented Championship playmakers were responsible for adding to the tally late in the week, but it was a duo playing overseas who got things going.
Headliners
Mario Pašalić had already made his presence felt in Atalanta colours in Europe, and on Monday night he made an instant Serie A impact, scoring the third of four goals in a handsome win at home to Frosinone.
A busy week then saw him play the first half of their goalless first leg at home to FC Copenhagen in the final stage of Europa League qualifiying, and he’ll hope to be involved at Roma tomorrow evening.
Fast-forward to Friday night, Victorien Angban – back from suspension – scored for Metz in their 1-0 win at Troyes. The Ivorian midfielder had only scored one previous goal in professional football, giving him plenty of reason to celebrate a fresh start at his fourth loan club.
On Saturday, Mason Mount and Kasey Palmer provided a more familiar look to the goalscoring charts when they both scored their first goals at home for their loan homes in 2018-19. Mount’s came in a 2-0 win at home to Preston, and he claimed an assist for the second, leaving him with a quote outstanding record throughout 2018 to date:

Palmer’s goal for a weakened Blackburn team helped them to a highly-impressive 1-0 win at home to Brentford, and it came four days after he’d missed a midweek draw with Reading due to a minor knock. It was the perfect way to return to the Rovers’ team.
Finally, Danilo Pantic played all of Partizan’s draw at home to Besiktas in midweek, giving them work to do in Istanbul if they’re to reach the Europa League group stages, and continued in the starting eleven in the league away to Macva Sabac on Sunday. He scored his third goal of the season, a delightful free kick, to help clinch a 3-1 win.

England
Premier League
Kurt Zouma’s Everton debut came in far from ideal circumstances; his stoppage-time arrival away to Bournemouth came when Michael Keane was taken to hospital with what turned out to be a fractured skull.
Kenedy was absent as Newcastle hosted Chelsea due to Premier League rules on loanees playing against their parent clubs.
Championship
Fikayo Tomori is quickly getting to grips with life in the Championship, and was imperious in a pair of 2-0 wins for Derby this week, first over Trevoh Chalobah’s Ipswich and then in Saturday’s triumph over Preston in which Mount scored.
Chalobah had a more testing week, also tasting defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday, and his immediate challenge is to learn how to take the rough with the smooth in a hectic Championship season whilst also being more careful in possession.

The Chelsea contingent at Bristol City doubled on Thursday when Tomas Kalas joined Jay Dasilva at Ashton Gate until the end of the season. He made his debut away to Swansea City on Saturday, earning immediate rave reviews for his part in a 1-0 win, and made a crucial goal-line clearance to boot. Dasilva was an unused substitute after missing the midweek trip to QPR altogether, and will clearly require some time to settle in at the club, particularly with Lloyd Kelly and Niclas Eliasson to compete with on the left side too.
Lewis Baker played about an hour of Leeds’ midweek draw at Swansea after Kalvin Phillips was forced off early through injury, but was back on the bench again at Norwich City on Saturday, playing a few moments at the very end of the match. Jamal Blackman served as the backup goalkeeper on both occasions.
Todd Kane returned to his more familiar position of right-back for Hull as they won 3-2 at Rotherham in midweek, but was on the left wing again for 67 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Stoke.
Reece James was in terrific form as Wigan won at 3-0 Stoke, before manager Paul Cook opted to rest him for the trip to QPR four days later, citing the need to try to prevent overloading him with playing time at such a young age. Nathan Byrne’s first-half injury pressed him into action earlier than expected, and Wigan went down to a 1-0 defeat.
League One
Dujon Sterling completed ninety minutes for Coventry away to Blackpool in midweek, but a knock kept him out of the weekend draw at Gillingham.
Charlie Colkett was left out of Shrewsbury’s squad for both matches this week and is already in a concerning position so early in the campaign.
League Two
Nathan Baxter kept back-to-back clean sheets for an upwardly-mobile Yeovil; four points from six games keep them in the early-season top seven, and the young goalkeeper continues to earn the plaudits in addition to an apparently healthy thirst:

Jacob Maddox’s Cheltenham lost to Macclesfield on Tuesday, leading to manager Gary Johnson losing his job, but Maddox held onto his place in the side for Saturday’s trip to Cambridge and helped them to a 1-0 win. Early feedback on his first month of senior football has been mostly confident and he seems to be growing increasingly comfortable in his new surroundings.
Netherlands
Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter were involved from first to last as Vitesse played out an interminably dull 0-0 draw at AZ that doesn’t bear dwelling on. Clarke-Salter, for his part, was impressive at the back again, and stands a good chance of being named in the Eredivisie Team of the Week for the second successive occasion.
Kyle Scott was an unused substitute in Telstar’s 1-0 defeat at home to Maastricht.
Spain
Michy Batshuayi made his Valencia debut last Monday night with a quarter of an hour from the bench in a draw at home to Atlético Madrid; he then saw the same amount of time in a losing cause away to Espanyol on Sunday.
Kenneth Omeruo is still awaiting his Leganés debut, and Joao Rodriguez’s hamstring injury kept him out of Tenerife’s trip to Almeria.
Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute in Lleida’s season-opener against Villarreal B.
Italy
A week after making his Torino debut at home to Roma, Ola Aina was back on the bench for the trip to Inter. Just like last week, he was pressed into first-half action because of injury – this time at left wing-back instead of right wing-back, but he turned in an assured and composed performance. He was also somewhat involved in Torino’s equaliser to cap a comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, finding himself front and centre with a chance that was blocked, only for Souhailo Meite to pick up the pieces.
Tiemoue Bakayoko made his Milan debut with half an hour as a substitute in a 3-2 defeat at Napoli. Manager Rino Gattuso was clear with his requirement for patience with the French midfielder moving forwards:

Baba Rahman played ninety minutes as Schalke were beaten 2-1 at Wolfsburg in their first Bundesliga match of the new season.

Matt Miazga played all of Nantes’ 1-1 draw against Caen, having almost joined his opposition earlier this month.
