The Loan Report: December 3-9

After all the goals in last week’s Loan Report, we have none this weekend, after a quiet seven days overall. Let’s catch up on how everybody’s doing anyway.

England

Premier League

Kurt Zouma returned to the Everton starting eleven for their midweek clash with Newcastle, for whom Kenedy missed out injured, and the Frenchman was in good form again. He’ll hope to retain his place when the Toffees host Watford on Monday evening, while Kenedy returned to the Newcastle squad against Wolves on Sunday, coming on for former blue Christian Atsu in the final minute of play.

Championship

Tammy Abraham, who scored five goals in two matches the last time we checked in on him, didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet again this week as Aston Villa drew 2-2 at West Brom, but he probably should have. A hard-working performance in which he served as a nuisance as usual went unrewarded due to some poor finishing when all was said and done.

Tomas Kalas was part of the Bristol City defensive effort that kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at Birmingham City, but Jay Dasilva was absent again, as manager Lee Johnson said the left-back was omitted due to a surplus of players in the position and his lack of size when going up against a physical team.

I left him out of the squad not because you want to leave somebody out of the squad but because we’ve had this before with left-backs.

Unless you plan to go to wing-backs – which I wasn’t on this particular occasion – the left-backs are almost always starting or not involved.

I had it with Scott Golbourne a few times. Marley and Callum were declared fit on Thursday and Friday and I just wanted that attacking difference given that Matty Taylor wasn’t there.

Left-back: Eros can play there, Baker can play there… Lloyd is there anyway. Plus, he’s 5ft2 and they’re very, very direct.

Your bench doesn’t always mean that you don’t fancy a player if he’s not there. Hakeeb Adelakun for example wasn’t on the bench either and neither was Bailey Wright or Frankie Fielding.

It was also a frustrating weekend for Kasey Palmer, who was an unused substitute for Blackburn, and Lewis Baker, who sat on the bench throughout the win over QPR for an injury-plagued Leeds United. Todd Kane, at least, did get ninety minutes for Hull at Millwall in a challenging match-up where he certainly didn’t disgrace himself.

Trevoh Chalobah continues to find the going hard at Ipswich, mixing the good with the bad in defeat at Stoke, while Reece James celebrated his 19th birthday by going up against good friends Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori. The Derby duo claimed the bragging rights with a 1-0 win.

Michael Hector played from start to finish in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Rotherham.

League One

Shrewsbury town have a new manager in Sam Ricketts and Charlie Colkett was handed an immediate opportunity to impress, as he was given a start in their midweek Checkatrade Trophy fixture. He did well with a couple of eye-catching contributions and, although he was an unused sub in league action four days later (against Brad Collins’ Burton Albion), there’s something positive to work with at last.

Iké Ugbo played the last half an hour of Scunthorpe’s defeat to Gillingham, and Dujon Sterling made his comeback from injury with a full outing for Coventry City at Walsall.

League Two

Jacob Maddox played an hour of Cheltenham’s win over Grimsby as he’s still carrying a hamstring injury, but is important enough to their cause to be risked enough to contribute as much as he can for as long as he can.

Nathan Baxter remains out through a hip injury at Yeovil.

Spain

Kenneth Omeruo played all ninety minutes on Friday night as Leganés drew 1-1 at home to Getafe. Michy Batshuayi got the last twenty minutes of Valencia vs Sevilla from the bench.

Joao Rodriguez was also a second-half introductee for Tenerife against Extremadura on Friday, and Josi Quintero was an unused substitute for Lleida as they beat Conquense.

Netherlands

With Jake Clarke-Salter and Charly Musonda still out injured, Eduardo is the sole Blue in action in Arnhem, but he was on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat to NAC Breda that will ask more questions of Leonid Slutskiy during a particularly troublesome period for Vitesse.

Fankaty Dabo is still injured and missing out for Sparta Rotterdam, while Kyle Scott and Telstar travel to Alkmaar on Monday to face Jong AZ.

Italy

Ola Aina played 18 minutes for Torino against Sudtirol in the Coppa Italia in midweek before sharing a pitch with Tiémoué Bakayoko on Sunday in a goalless draw with Milan.

Mario Pašalić was an unused substitute for Atalanta.

Germany

Baba Rahman didn’t play for Schalke this week.

France

Victorien Angban played 72 minutes as Metz beat Red Star in midweek Ligue 2 action, and was then rested for the weekend cup win at Oissel.

Matt Miazga remains persona non grata at Nantes.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard played ninety minutes in Cercle Brugge’s 3-0 defeat at home to Antwerp.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut was an unused substitute for Falkirk against Alloa.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played 79 minutes in a comfortable 3-0 win for Partizan Belgrade.

Brazil

The Brazilian Serie A season concluded last weekend, so Nathan is technically now on holiday, but his deal with Atlético-MG is expected to be terminated ahead of schedule next month.
