The Loan Report: February 12-18

Michy Batshuayi continues to do the business at Dortmund and scored twice against Atalanta in the Europa League this week to ensure he takes the headlines in this latest edition of the Loan Report.

Headliners

The Belgian forward had already made an instant impact at the Westfalenstadion after his deadline-day move, scoring three goals in his first two appearances, and his second-half heroics against Atalanta on Thursday ensured the Germans recovered from a goal down to claim a 3-2 first leg win courtesy of two more tallies.

On Sunday against Gladbach, he was finally held off the scoresheet, but Dortmund edged a narrow 1-0 win.

Over in Mexico, Joao Rodriguez kick-started his season with his first goal since November as Tampico Madero beat Leones Negros in midweek. The Colombian forward had been relatively prolific in the latter stages of the Ascenso Apertura season, but Los Jaibos suffered something of a hangover in the first few games of the Clausura stage, having failed to win promotion. He put paid to that in a 4-2 triumph on Wednesday, and then helped them to a 2-0 win at Albrijes on Saturday to begin moving up the table.

England

FA Cup

FA Cup Fifth Round weekend saw a limited schedule of fixtures, with only Tammy Abraham of Chelsea’s Premier League loanees in action. He led the anaemic Swansea forward line for 67 minutes of a goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Kurt Zouma, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kenedy all had the weekend off.

Ola Aina, Fikayo Tomori and Michael Hector all also sat out Hull’s fixture this weekend, as their loan agreements prevented them from featuring against their parent club, and a depleted Tigers thus lost 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

Jamal Blackman continued in goal for Sheffield United, despite Simon Moore’s return from suspension, but he could do little to prevent a Jamie Vardy goal from securing a 1-0 win for Leicester City, who will now host Chelsea in the Quarter Finals.

Championship

Jeremie Boga played 74 minutes as Birmingham City were beaten 1-0 at home by Millwall, whilst Jake Clarke-Salter was on the pitch for all of lowly Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat by Brentford. Tomas Kalas helped Fulham end Aston Villa’s long unbeaten run by keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win, with Lucas Piazon coming on as a very late substitute, but there was once again no action whatsoever for Lewis Baker at Middlesbrough.

Kasey Palmer played seven minutes for Derby in defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, and then had the weekend off, with Derby not in action to due to FA Cup-enforced postponements.

League One

Jay Dasilva continued to rack up the minutes at Charlton after featuring throughout all of their draw with Bradford and their win at Milton Keynes on Saturday, squaring off against Blues team-mate Iké Ugbo in the latter. Ugbo had played ninety minutes in defeat at Oldham in midweek as well, but Dasilva now has 34 appearances and almost 3000 minutes logged this season, and has been consistently impressive across that period of time too.

Jordan Houghton played all of Doncaster’s defeat to Walsall and was then an unused substitute as they beat Fleetwood, and Todd Kane played all of Oxford’s defeats to Rotherham and Plymouth.

League Two

Brad Collins celebrated his 21st birthday on Sunday and did so after helping Forest Green Rovers to an unbeaten week, a 3-1 win over Stevenage followed by a 1-1 draw at Morecambe, moving them six points clear of the drop. Unfortunately, Morecambe’s equaliser is one that he’ll probably want back.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter and Woking were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline at Hartlepool, whilst Jared Thompson and Chippenham were involved in a 3-3 draw at home to promotion-chasing Hampton & Richmond.

Netherlands

Having beaten Feyenoord so impressively last weekend, it was the turn of frustratingly disappointing Vitesse to come to the fore again, as Henk Fraser’s men surrendered meekly in defeat to Excelsior on Saturday. Matt Miazga missed out through illness, but Mason Mount was kept quiet, and Fankaty Dabo had an up and down day, playing a part in Luc Castaignos’ early opener before later being replaced by new signing Vyacheslav Karavaev.

Marco van Ginkel’s knee injury kept him out of a third successive PSV fixture, but Cristian Cuevas returned to play 68 minutes for FC Twente at home to Sparta Rotterdam.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played all of Waasland-Beveren’s 2-2 draw at Mouscron.

Germany

Baba Rahman is still not fit enough to feature for Schalke.

Scotland

Charly Musonda’s first appearance in a senior UEFA competition arrived with fireworks as he came off the bench for Celtic against Zenit on Thursday and provided a scintillating assist for Callum McGregor’s late winner.

He was rewarded with a start in the league at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, albeit in an unfamiliar right-wing role, and his impact was limited as he was kicked from pillar to post by opposing defenders in their goalless draw.

Spain

Josimar Quintero remains injured and hasn’t played yet for Betis Deportivo, but he is scheduled to begin training this week, and could be in line to feature next weekend.

Portugal

Nathan played the final ten minutes of Belenenses’ 2-0 win at Estoril.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Kasimpasa pulled off a tremendous upset on Sunday as they beat league leaders Galatasaray 2-1.

Serbia

The long winter break is over for Danilo Pantic and Partizan Belgrade; they returned with a 1-1 Europa League draw at home to Viktoria Plzen before beating Mladost Lucani 2-1 on Sunday, and Pantic played ninety minutes in both fixtures.

Russia

The Russian league doesn’t return until March, but Mario Pašalić and Spartak Moscow resumed Europa League festivities against Athletic Bilbao on Tueday, where the Croatian was an unused substitute.
