The Loan Report: February 19-25

A steady pace of loanee goals continued this week, despite Michy Batshuayi being held off the scoresheet for the first time at Dortmund, as Kasey Palmer and Mason Mount chipped in with strong performances instead, whilst Joao Rodriguez also found the net again.

Headliners

Palmer’s season hasn’t exactly gone the way most had hoped way back in August. Fresh off the back of helping Huddersfield to the Premier League, he was primed to explode onto the big stage, and perhaps even force his way into the England reckoning. Unfortunately, whilst several of his young Chelsea team-mates did just that, injury sidelined him up until Christmas, and his time in Yorkshire came to an end.

Instead, he found himself back in the Championship, joining Derby on transfer deadline day last month. A handful of minutes from the bench gave him a gentle introduction to life at Pride Park, but he made sure to make the most of them in midweek, grabbing a stoppage-time equaliser against Leeds, further aggravating the same fans he enjoyed winding up when with their rivals at Huddersfield.

That earned him a first start away to Reading three days later, and he was on form again, opening the scoring early and adding an assist later on in an eventful 3-3 draw.

Palmer has long been one of Chelsea’s most exciting midfield prospects, as has Mason Mount, and the latter continued his stellar season at Vitesse with his seventh goal of the season away to VVV Venlo on Saturday. It was a delightful free kick, creeping inside the near post, and helped turn around a two-goal deficit to earn a point.

His progress has been rapid and impressive, such that he’s already eclipsed Lewis Baker’s numbers from his first campaign in Arnhem, which came at the age of 20, two years older than Mount was at the start of this season.

Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga, back from illness, both played the full match alongside Mount.

Rodriguez came off the bench to score a last-gasp penalty for Tampico Madero in the Copa MX against Veracruz and followed that up by playing 81 minutes as Los Jaibos were beaten 2-0 at home by Juárez.

England

Premier League

Tammy Abraham came off the bench for Swansea in defeat at Brighton to make a positive impact, scoring a powerful solo goal that was taken away from him by the Premier League goals panel. His effort was credited as a Lewis Dunk own goal, but he deserves all of the credit for making it happen.

Kurt Zouma and Stoke drew 1-1 at Leicester, the Frenchman part of a strong defensive effort undone by a Jack Butland mistake, whilst Kenedy played 64 minutes as Newcastle drew 2-2 at Bournemouth. Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out through injury, though, and Chelsea and Crystal Palace continue to be at loggerheads with regards to his immediate future.

Championship

A busy week of Football League action saw most clubs in action twice, and it was a very successful week for Fulham. A 1-1 draw at Bristol City was followed up with a 2-0 win over Wolves to continue their automatic promotion charge. Lucas Piazon played 90 minutes in the former before sitting out the latter, whilst Tomas Kalas did the reverse, turning in his best performance in weeks to help shut out the runaway league leaders at home.

Jeremie Boga played 45 and 90 minutes respectively as Birmingham lost to Brentford and Barnsley to remain squarely in relegation trouble, whilst Jake Clarke-Salter was sent off for a particularly aggressive tackle in a remarkable 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough. Lewis Baker was an unused substitute in that one, as he was in midweek at home to Hull after Ben Gibson pulled out through illness, but he’s still no closer to his first league action in six months.

Ola Aina, Michael Hector and Fikayo Tomori all started that defeat at the Riverside Stadium, with Tomori making way a quarter of an hour from time, but only Aina featured in Friday’s 1-0 win over Jamal Blackman’s Sheffield United. Blackman had led the Blades to a 2-1 win over QPR in midweek, but could do little to help his team avoid a defeat to the Tigers.

League One

Jay Dasilva played 72 minutes as Charlton lost 2-0 at home to Shrewsbury, but most home supporters felt he was their best player on the day.

Iké Ugbo played every minute of a pair of away draws for Milton Keynes at Rochdale and Fleetwood, whilst Todd Kane put in a full shift for Oxford in a goalless draw at Northampton. Jordan Houghton, on the other hand, played the last few seconds of Doncaster’s defeat at Rotherham.

League Two

Forest Green Rovers continue to improve and pull further away from relegation, and Brad Collins’ sixth clean sheet of the season helped set the tone for a 2-0 win over Crawley on Saturday.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter also kept a clean sheet – his seventh of the campaign – as Woking drew 0-0 at Boreham Wood four days after losing 2-1 at Ebbsfleet.

Jared Thompson turned 19 this week but couldn’t celebrate with a win as Chippenham Town lost 2-0 to St Albans, conceding both goals in stoppage time at the end of the match.

Netherlands

Marco van Ginkel returned for PSV’s big match away to Feyenoord and captained the league leaders to a confident 3-1 win.

Cristian Cuevas was booked as FC Twente were beaten 3-1 at FC Utrecht.

Germany

Michy Batshuayi was unable to score for Dortmund away to Atalanta, but the Germans still progressed into the last sixteen of the Europa League, and now prepare to face Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Monday night.

Baba Rahman remains unfit for Schalke and is yet to make his second debut for the club.

Scotland

Charly Musonda played the late stages of Celtic’s Europa League elimination away to Zenit St Petersburg in midweek, and was an unused substitute in the league win at Aberdeen on Sunday.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played ninety minutes in Waasland-Beveren’s home defeat to Gent.

Portugal

Nathan was an unused substitute in Belenenses’ 1-0 win over Feirense.

Spain

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for Betis Deportivo against Villanovense, marking the first time the Ecuadorian has made their matchday squad since arriving on loan.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Kasimpasa lost 3-2 to Kayserispor on Saturday.

Russia

Mario Pašalić played 74 minutes as Spartak Moscow exited the Europa League at the hands of Athletic Bilbao. Their league campaign resumes next weekend after a mammoth winter break.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played ninety minutes as Partizan Belgrade were knocked out of the Europa League by Viktoria Plzen before playing 66 league minutes in a 1-1 draw at home to Zemun.

Ireland

Mitchell Beeney joined Sligo Rovers for the remainder of the season earlier in the week, and marked his debut on Friday with a 2-1 win over Derry.
