The Loan Report: February 26 – March 4

A relatively quiet week on the loan front lacked significant headlines and several English-based players saw their fixtures postponed due to heavy snow and freezing weather. With nothing specific to focus on, let’s dive straight in.

England

Premier League

Inclement weather rarely results in postponements in the Premier League, however, and so a full schedule of matches went ahead. Kurt Zouma was in superb form for Stoke at Southampton, but the caveat on that is that it was a dreadful match that finished 0-0, and the defenders had it relatively easy throughout.

Tammy Abraham played ninety minutes in midweek as Swansea beat Sheffield Wednesday in an FA Cup replay, but then only played a handful of stoppage time minutes in their 4-1 league win over West Ham on Saturday. Kenedy, meanwhile, played his first full ninety minutes for Newcastle away to Liverpool, featuring as a left wing-back in a 2-0 defeat.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to Crystal Palace this week after spending two full months out with an ankle injury, but a knee problem flared up in his first training session back, leaving him in doubt to face Manchester United on Monday night.

Championship

Lucas Piazon played nineteen minutes of Fulham’s 2-1 win at Derby, for whom Kasey Palmer made an impactful 34-minute appearance off the bench himself, but Tomas Kalas missed out through injury.

Jeremie Boga was only called upon for ten minutes of Birmingham’s 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest, whilst Jake Clarke-Salter was suspended for Sunderland’s draw at Millwall, and Lewis Baker was an unused substitute as a Patrick Bamford hat-trick saw Middlesbrough win 3-0 at home to Leeds.

Jamal Blackman lasted just 34 minutes of Sheffield United’s 3-1 win at Reading, and isn’t expected to be out for too long, whilst Ola Aina played all of Hull’s draw with Barnsley as Fikayo Tomori and Michael Hector remained on the bench throughout. All four saw their weekend fixtures postponed.

League One

Iké Ugbo was the only loanee to see League One action this weekend, cutting a frustrated figure as Milton Keynes lost 1-0 at home to Bristol Rovers. Todd Kane, Jordan Houghton and Jay Dasilva were victims of the weather, although Dasilva is also injured and likely to be out until early April.

League Two

Brad Collins and Forest Green Rovers had their trip to Crewe called off too.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter and Jared Thompson were also prevented from playing due to snow; Thompson was doubly affected as a trial appearance with Brentford’s B team against Swansea in midweek was abandoned midway through the first half due to a heavy blizzard.

Netherlands

A big weekend in the Eredivisie saw Vitesse Arnhem continue their curiously good record against Ajax, recording a handsome 3-2 win on Sunday in front of the watching England Assistant Manager Steve Holland.

Mason Mount, Matt Miazga and Fankaty Dabo were all part of a strong team effort that saw Ajax’s title aspirations almost fully extinguished, as they find themselves ten points off the top, and it was a highly-deserved victory too. Miazga had a first-half header cleared off the line, and Mount deserved a penalty that wasn’t awarded, but all three completed a good ninety minutes.

Marco van Ginkel captained PSV to a 3-0 win over Utrecht, inching ever closer to the title, whilst Cristian Cuevas played all of FC Twente’s draw with Groningen.

Germany

Michy Batshuayi was quiet in Dortmund’s 1-1 draw at Leipzig, whilst there was still no Baba Rahman for Schalke.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played 86 minutes of Waasland-Beveren’s 1-0 defeat to Genk.

Spain

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute as Betis Deportivo lost 3-1 to Merida.

Portugal

Nathan played 27 minutes of Belenenses’ 0-0 draw away to Vitoria Guimaraes.

Celtic

Charly Musonda came on midway through the second half of Celtic’s Scottish Cup Quarter Final win over Greenock Morton and had relatively little impact.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo played his near-customary ninety minutes in Kasimpasa’s 1-1 draw with Osmanlispor.

Russia
Mario Pašalić was an unused substitute in the Moscow derby as Spartak drew 0-0 at Lokomotiv.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played 77 minutes of Partizan’s 1-0 defeat at Radnicki.

Mexico

Joao Rodriguez did not play for Tampico Madero in their 3-0 win over Venados.

Ireland

Mitchell Beeney and Sligo were beaten 4-1 by Cork City last Monday, and are next in action this coming Friday, when they host Waterford.
