Our latest Loan Report features two goals that take us to 48 for the season overall, and they both came to players with Vitesse connections. We’ll check in on Mason Mount in due course, but we’ll begin with a very happy 24th birthday for Lucas Piazon.
Headliners
The Brazilian forward has endured a frustrating season that saw him spend more than three months on the sidelines with a broken ankle. Since making his comeback in December, however, he’s looked more and more potent, and finally made good on that with a goal and an assist in Fulham’s 6-0 win over Burton Albion. He laid on their opener for Rui Fonte before then curling home a confident second for his third goal of the season.
The result lifts Slavisa Jokanovic’s side up to seventh in the Championship and, with eighteen games remaining, they look to be mounting a playoff push that many had tipped them for earlier in the campaign. Tomas Kalas had a quiet day at centre-half by comparison.
Piazon, of course, spent two seasons on loan in Arnhem, where Mount currently plies his trade. In their first match since returning from a winter break, his instinctive second-half finish secured three points away to Sparta Rotterdam.
He and Fankaty Dabo both completed ninety minutes there, with Matt Miazga absent, but the American rejoined the team for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Heerenveen, where Mount this time claimed an assist as Daniel Hoeegh turned his cross into his own net.
Charlie Colkett missed out altogether through injury, and is back at Cobham rehabbing.
England
Premier League
Injuries continue to afflict Chelsea’s Premier League loanees, with the latest news on Ruben Loftus-Cheek not good at all. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson this week indicated that his ankle problem could require season-ending surgery, and that they were considering their options, but that it would ultimately be Chelsea’s decision.

Tammy Abraham also remains sidelined with a problem of his own that he too has been working on back at Cobham, but he is expected to return to duty with Swansea in the next week or two. Kurt Zouma, at least, is playing, and after losing heavily at Man Utd on Sunday he was able to help Paul Lambert to a first win in charge of the Potters on Saturday, recording a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield.
Championship
Four loanees featured as Sunderland hosted Hull at the Stadium of Light and, although it was a good home debut for Jake Clarke-Salter, it wasn’t such a memorable day for Fikayo Tomori, Ola Aina and Michael Hector as Sunderland emerged victorious by a 1-0 scoreline. Clarke-Salter earned plenty of plaudits for a mature display on the left of Chris Coleman’s back three, but Hull’s trio of loanees all came in for plenty of criticism after a poor performance and a defeat that leaves the Tigers on the edge of the relegation zone.
Jeremie Boga and Birmingham find themselves a point further back and in a world of trouble themselves, but the Frenchman was in good nick in their 1-1 draw at Preston. He created two would-be goals from the left wing in the first half, neither of them were taken, and Steve Cotterill’s boys had to settle for a point.
Jamal Blackman was an unused substitute for Sheffield United, whilst Lewis Baker was once again absent for Middlesbrough.
League One
Several Charlton fans had plenty of good words to say about Jay Dasilva after the left-back put in another strong ninety minutes of work in a 3-1 win over Walsall to re-ignite the Addicks’ promotion push. Three wins on the bounce have moved Karl Robinson’s side back into the top six, and Dasilva has been an integral part of their best work all year long. He stepped into midfield to assist their second goal.
Jordan Houghton played 70 minutes as Doncaster drew again, 2-2 at Shewsbury, whilst Iké Ugbo played all of Milton Keynes’ defeat at Northampton Town. MK manager Robbie Neilson, who fought all season long to get Ugbo to the club, was dismissed immediately after the match, leaving a less than certain future for the teenage forward. Having already played for Barnsley and Chelsea’s Development Squad this season, however, he has to remain at StadiumMK as per FIFA’s rules on the maximum number of clubs a player can represent in one campaign.
League Two
Brad Collins and Forest Green recorded their biggest win of the season in defeating Cambridge 5-2 at The New Lawn, but they remain in the relegation zone, a point adrift of Chesterfield.
Non-League
Nathan Baxter’s return to Solihull Moors, where he spent the second half of last season, did not end well as Woking ended up on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline. Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town, meanwhile, drew 2-2 at home to Dartford.
Netherlands
Marco van Ginkel missed PSV’s last-minute 2-1 win away to Heracles through injury.
Todd Kane was an unused substitute in Groningen’s draw at Willem II, whilst Cristian Cuevas played the full duration of Twente’s stalemate at Roda.
Spain
Josimar Quintero was not involved for Real Betis Deportivo away to Ecija in the Spanish third tier after joining the club on loan this week. The deal includes an option to buy the Ecuadorian midfielder on a permanent basis.
Belgium
Victorien Angban remains suspended upon the return of the Belgian League from a winter hiatus, after being handed a three-match ban before Christmas.
Portugal
Nathan was an unused substitute as Belenenses drew 0-0 at Maritimo.
Turkey
Kenneth Omeruo helped Kasimpasa to a 3-2 win over Alanyaspor on Friday night.
Mexico
Joao Rodriguez played 69 minutes of Tampico Madero’s goalless draw away to Atlético de San Luis.
