The Loan Report: January 22-28

It’s another Mason Mount-inspired Loan Report this Sunday evening as the prodigiously-talented 19 year-old once again stole the show for Vitesse.

Headliners

Having now forced his way into the starting eleven on a permanent basis, Mount has been on a roll lately, racking up a strong spell of producing of goals and assists in matches either side of Christmas. Against PEC Zwolle on Saturday night however, he served up arguably his finest moment yet, with an astounding 35-yard free kick to claim a late 2-1 victory.

From the little look as he was sizing up his options to the way the ball left his foot, you could tell he absolutely meant it, and it was another moment that showed how valuable he is to a generally underperforming Vitesse team. Matt Miazga and Fankaty Dabo joined him in featuring for all ninety minutes, but Charlie Colkett remains sidelined with an injury.

England

Premier League

FA Cup Fourth Round action meant a weekend off for Kurt Zouma (eliminated), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (injured and eliminated) and Kenedy (ineligible for Newcastle against parent club Chelsea), but Tammy Abraham did make his return from injury for Swansea in a 1-1 draw at Notts County. He featured for 70 minutes in his first action since December 30th and will now set about ending a three-month run without scoring.

Championship

Jeremie Boga got fifteen minutes off the bench as Birmingham parked the bus and came away with a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield in the FA Cup, whilst Ola Aina and Michael Hector led Hull to a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest. Fikayo Tomori was an unused substitute there, and Lewis Baker was once again not selected by Middlesbrough as they exited the competition at home to Brighton. Jamal Blackman was also absent entirely for Sheffield United, but will stay with the Blades for the rest of the season, something manager Chris Wilder was happy about.

Iké Ugbo’s home debut for Milton Keynes came under a new manager in former England Under-16 coach Dan Micciche, but it was one to forget, as Coventry edged them 1-0 to end their cup aspirations for another year.

In the Championship itself, Fulham won 3-1 at Barnsley to continue their red-hot form; Tomas Kalas was in strong form at the back, whilst Lucas Piazon got 63 minutes on the right of the front three. Finally, Sunderland’s cup exit meant Jake Clarke-Salter had the weekend off.

League One

Jordan Houghton played 81 minutes in Doncaster’s midweek draw at Scunthorpe and was then rested as an unused substitute in their 3-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers on Saturday. Jay Dasilva and Charlton saw their fixture at Blackpool postponed.

League Two

Brad Collins and Forest Green Rovers fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Carlisle to remain in the relegation zone. Rovers also signed Cameron Belford this week to provide competition for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Non-League

It was a good week for Nathan Baxter and Woking; after a well-earned 1-1 draw at Woking on Tuesday, they beat Fylde 1-0 on Saturday for the 19 year-old’s fifth clean sheet of the season.

Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town were scheduled for a double-header of their own this week but trips to Poole and Gloucester City both fell victim to the weather.

Netherlands

Marco van Ginkel returned from injury to lead PSV to a 2-0 win over Cristian Cuevas’ FC Twente, and Todd Kane was an unused substitute in Groningen’s 3-3 draw at home to Heracles.

Belgium

Victorien Angban returned from suspension to help Waasland-Beveren to a 2-2 draw away to an Anderlecht side that continues to struggle. The Ivorian midfielder, who is no stranger to disciplinary trouble, even managed to avoid collecting his customary booking.

Portugal

Nathan will be hoping to make his Belenenses debut at home to Benfica on Monday night.

Spain

Josimar Quintero is awaiting international clearance before he can make his debut for Betis Deportivo, but he was present in the stands to watch them beat Recreativo 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo and Kasimpasa lost 2-1 at Besiktas on Friday night.

Mexico

Joao Rodriguez played 79 minutes in Tampico Madero’s 2-1 win over Correcaminos.
