The Loan Report: January 8-14

It’s been another quiet week on the loan front, with a number of players still on their winter break, and injuries afflicting others. With no headliners of note, we’ll dive into the typically busy English schedule.

England

Premier League

The worst news of the week was that Izzy Brown’s season is over after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament early in Brighton’s FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Monday night. That rules him out of the rest of the season, and could impact the beginning of next, as reconstructive surgery and the ensuing rehabilitation will take an absolute minimum of six months.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham remain sidelined with knocks of their own, leaving Kurt Zouma as the sole Premier League loanee in focus. The managerless Potters travel to Manchester United on Monday night.

Championship

Jake Clarke-Salter, the newest member of the loan army, was thrust straight into the Sunderland team for Saturday’s televised trip to Cardiff. He had his moments, both positive and negative, and almost scored with a second-half header off the woodwork, but it was generally a tough introduction to life at the foot of the Championship. A 4-0 defeat leaves Sunderland firmly bottom of the league, and Jake’s battle against Kenneth Zohore will have left him in no doubt about what’s required to succeed at the Stadium of Light.

Hull drew 0-0 with Reading as Fikayo Tomori, Ola Aina and Michael Hector once again comprised 75% of their back four, and they helped Nigel Adkins’ side to a solid clean sheet. Tomori, in particular, has impressed under the new manager with some powerful displays at right-back.

Fulham won 1-0 at Middlesbrough with Lucas Piazon playing 85 minutes, and Tomas Kalas an early second-half substitute. Neither particularly impressed, but they were at least involved, which is more than can be said for Lewis Baker. The 22 year-old midfielder missed out again and, with Tony Pulis indicating that a choice would soon have to be made as to whether he would remain on Teesside or return to Chelsea, he could finally be on his way back to freedom.

Jeremie Boga played 83 minutes of Birmingham’s 3-0 defeat to Derby, once again showing moments of real promise, only in a team that has no idea of how to utilise his ability.

Jamal Blackman was an unused substitute as Sheffield United drew 0-0 at home to rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

League One

Jay Dasilva, who ranks amongst the top five ‘young English’ players in minutes played in the Football League this season, completed two more matches for Charlton this week. He was on the losing end of a penalty shootout in the Checkatrade Trophy against Oxford – who will now face Chelsea in the Quarter Finals – but the Addicks returned to form away to Bury on Sunday in a 1-0 win.

Jordan Houghton anchored Doncaster’s midfield to a 1-1 draw at home to Plymouth.

Iké Ugbo missed Milton Keynes’ goalless draw with AFC Wimbledon due to a technicality in his loan agreement with the club. His stay at StadiumMK was meant to begin tomorrow, Monday 16th January, but they wanted to ensure they picked him up early, and therefore agreed for Ugbo to feature in his prior commitment for the Development Squad at Sunderland. He scored in a 5-0 win.

League Two

Brad Collins was also in midweek Checkatrade Trophy action as Forest Green Rovers bowed out at the hands of Yeovil Town, and there was disappointment in the League on Saturday too as a 1-0 defeat to Swindon saw them fall back into the relegation zone.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter turned in a Man of the Match performance in Woking’s 1-0 defeat to Tranmere, whilst Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town drew 1-1 with Braintree to stay just ahead of the relegation zone.

Mexico

The Mexican Clausura stages began in early January, with Joao Rodriguez having extended his stay at Tampico Madero until the end of June, in a bid to help Los Jaibos to promotion from the Liga Ascensco. Having gone close to doing so in the Apertura stage at the end of 2017, thanks largely to Joao’s goals, there is optimism at the club, and a pair of draws in their first two outings of 2018 represent a solid start.
