Mason Mount is intent on dragging Vitesse back into the Europa League next season, whether he’ll be at the Gelredome again or not, and demonstrated as much with an unstoppable week of football.
Vitesse’s sixth-place finish ensured they would take part in the Eredivisie’s four-team playoff for the final Europa League Qualifying Round berth. A two-legged Semi Final against ADO Den Haag was up first, and Mount was simply unplayable. He scored his first professional hat-trick in a 5-2 away win in the opening match, whilst also weighing in with an assist, and scored the second in the return matc-up just for good measure.
It takes his overall contribution for the season to 13 goals and 11 assists, with a final over two matches to come against Utrecht this week. Oh, and he’s still only 19, and wasn’t a first-team regular until November.
Matt Miazga played every minute of both legs whilst Fankaty Dabo got 35 minutes in Saturday’s second encounter.
Tammy Abraham’s Swansea City were relegated this week after losing at home to both Southampton and Stoke City. The big forward has been somewhat frustratingly under-utilised by a team lacking a goalscoring presence, and despite offering a presence in his half an hour from the bench in midweek, it was that defeat that set the Swans back on the path to the Championship.
He played another half an hour or so against Kurt Zouma on Sunday; the Frenchman emerged victorious and, although the season ended disappointingly for both, they’ll be playing top flight football somewhere next season, regardless of how their 2017-18 campaigns ended.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek said farewell to Crystal Palace with ninety minutes in a 2-0 win over West Brom, whilst Kenedy was ineligible to feature for Newcastle in their 3-0 drubbing of his parent club.
The Football League playoffs got underway in earnest this week and there’s Chelsea interest in three of the four teams involved. Kasey Palmer’s Derby beat Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon’s Fulham 1-0 in a tight first leg of their Semi Final, but Piazon was the only one to feature, playing the last quarter of an hour. Lewis Baker, meanwhile, was not selected for Middlesbrough’s defeat at home to Aston Villa in the other Semi Final.
Jay Dasilva played in both legs of Charlton’s Playoff Semi Final defeat to Shrewsbury Town, a disappointing end to a week in which he was named as the club’s Player of the Season.
🎥 Congrats, 'little' Jay Dasilva! 👏

Baba Rahman finished a long and frustrating season by playing for the first time in more than a year as he featured for the final half an hour of Schalke’s last day win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Victorien Angban played 88 minutes of Waasland-Beveren’s 8-0 hiding at Zulte Waregem, but his team were then awarded a 5-0 default win for their fixture against Lierse, who filed for bankruptcy this week and will be unable to fulfil their remaining fixtures.
Nathan played the second half of Belenenses’ defeat at Boavista, their final match of the season.
Josimar Quintero did not play in Betis Deportivo’s last outing of the season, a 4-0 defeat at Extremadura.
Charly Musonda missed Celtic’s last match of the season against Aberdeen and, well, let’s just say that his (apparent) partner won’t be disappointed when his eighteen-month deal is terminated early this summer:
Mario Pašalić played ninety minutes as Spartak Moscow, having already qualified for the Champions League qualifying rounds, lost 1-0 to Dinamo Moscow on the last day of the Russian season.
Danilo Pantic missed a penalty in Partizan’s midweek Cup win over Cukaricki and was then unavailable for Sunday’s league trip to Vozdovac.
Kenneth Omeruo, initially named as a substitute, was forced into action in the 37th minute of Kasimpasa’s home game against Geclerbirligi, and helped them to a 3-1 win. Now up to 8th, they finish next weekend against title-chasing Istanbul BB, and could even find themselves as high as 6th in the final standings.
Mitchell Beeney was in goal as Sligo lost to Dundalk on Friday.
