The Loan Report: October 29 – November 4

After a steady if unspectacular few weeks on the loan front, things exploded back into life over the past seven days, with a bunch of goals and noteworthy talking points. Let’s get stuck in.

Headliners

It’s a good time to be Jacob Maddox. Turning 20 on Saturday, he scored his first professional goals in midweek by notching a brace in Cheltenham’s Checkatrade Trophy win against Arsenal’s Under-21s, and followed that up with a Man of the Match performance in the Robins’ 2-2 league draw against Mansfield.

Staying in chronological order, Kylian Hazard scored his first goal for Cercle Brugge in their 2-1 win against Mouscron. Having impressed in his two previous outings, he earned more playing time, and made it count with the equaliser.

On Sunday, Reece James found the back of the net for the first time in professional football with a delightful free kick to give Wigan the lead against Leeds. Unfortunately, the Latics were unable to build upon the strike, and eventually lost 2-1, with Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman once again consigned to the bench throughout for the visitors.

And in the Netherlands, Kyle Scott returned from injury to grab his second of the season for Telstar in a 2-1 win at home to Go Ahead Eagles.

England

Premier League

Newcastle United finally got their first home win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Watford, a fixture in which Kenedy played as well in as any recent performance. The Brazilian has often been found wanting since his return to St James’ Park but, against a former loan club of his, he was much better on this occasion.

Kurt Zouma continued in his established role at centre-half in Everton’s 3-1 win over Brighton

Championship

The big story of the week from England’s second tier was the return of Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori to Stamford Bridge…as Derby County players. The Blues’ decision to allow their dynamic loan duo to take part in their League Cup clash was well-received, and although Tomori scored an unfortunate early own goal, they both more than held their own in their performances, with Mount claiming an assist on the night too.

The toll of the attention and of the match itself was clearly felt though, as neither took part in the Rams’ 3-1 win against Birmingham in the league three days later. Both have played almost every minute of football since moving to Pride Park, but Mount sat out with a minor ankle problem, while Tomori was afforded a long-overdue rest.

Tammy Abraham weighed in with a very classy assist to set Aston Villa on their way to a 2-0 win over Bolton on Friday night; his touch and deft pass showing that he’s more than a goal poacher.

Michael Hector was voted Sheffield Wednesday’s player of the month for October, only to be curiously left on the bench for the visit of Norwich on Saturday, and the Owls duly lost 4-0.

Moving on, Trevoh Chalobah got a full ninety minutes for Ipswich in their draw with Preston, while Kasey Palmer was sharp off the bench midway through the second half of Blackburn’s 1-0 victory against QPR. Todd Kane saw a few moments at the end of Hull’s win over West Brom.

Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva were involved from start to finish as Bristol City lost by the odd goal in five away to Reading.

League One

Iké Ugbo was pressed into action earlier than expected as Scunthorpe hosted Oxford, entering the fray as a 20th-minute replacement for the injured James Horsfield, and helped the Iron to a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Brad Collins backstopped Burton to a 3-1 win at local rivals Walsall, but Dujon Sterling missed out for Coventry with a minor injury, and Shrewsbury once again pretended that Charlie Colkett doesn’t exist.

League Two

Nathan Baxter saved a first-half penalty but couldn’t prevent Yeovil from losing 2-1 at Morecambe.

Spain

Michy Batshuayi came on at half time in Valencia’s midweek Copa del Rey win against Ebro, and then saw a quarter of an hour late on in Saturday’s defeat at home to Girona.

Kenneth Omeruo was involved in every second as Leganés drew 2-2 with Rayo Vallecano in the cup before holding Atlético Madrid to a very credible 1-1 draw at the weekend.

Joao Rodriguez played the last quarter of an hour of Tenerife’s defeat Numancia, and Josimar Quintero came on as a late sub in Lleida’s triumph at Castellon.

Netherlands

Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter played all of Vitesse’s 2-0 cup win away to Heracles and then all ninety minutes again in a narrow 1-0 defeat away to PSV.

Fankaty Dabo is still out with injury at Sparta Rotterdam.

Italy

Ola Aina goes from strength to strength at Torino, turning in another impressive ninety minutes in a 4-1 win at Sampdoria that lifted I Granata up to seventh place.

Unfortunately, things aren’t going so well for Tiemoue Bakayoko. Once again voted as ‘the worst’ by Gazzetta dello Sport for his ninety-minute outing against Genoa in midweek, he did at least play all of their sleepy last-minute win at Udinese on Sunday without incident.

Mario Pašalić played the final eight minutes of Atalanta’s win at Bologna.

Germany

There was no Baba Rahman for Schalke. Again.

France

Matt Miazga’s time at Nantes appears to be over just as it had gotten started. A change of manager has left him on the outside looking in as, he’s been sent to train with the reserves, and will likely begin looking for a new club to join in January. Having been an almost ever-present in the first two months of the season, it’s a surprising and disappointing development for a player who, up until then, had been trending upwards over the past year.

Victorien Angban and Metz host Auxerre on Monday night.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut played seven minutes for Falkirk against Ross County and fifteen in defeat to Ayr, both as a substitute.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic, forecast to miss another fortnight with a back problem, returned ahead of schedule to play 73 minutes for Partizan away to Cukaricki on Tuesday, but then missed Sunday’s league fixture with Vojvodina.

Brazil

Nathan was an unused substitute on Saturday as Atlético-MG lost at home to Gremio.
