The Loan Report: September 17-23

Another productive week for the Loan Army was headlined by goals from two England Under-21 internationals who are anything but strangers to stealing the show.

Headliners

Tammy Abraham scores goals in the Championship. He proved as much during the 2016-17 season at Bristol City, and grabbed his first in Aston Villa colours in midweek, opening his account in a 2-0 win against Rotherham.

It was a very typical Tammy Abraham goal; smart movement off the ball, operating in relatively little space, and producing a smart finish with the minimum of fuss. That all begs the rather pertinent question of why Steve Bruce’s Villa continue to drive long balls his way, as they did in their 2-1 weekend defeat to Michael Hector’s Sheffield Wednesday, but such is the pressure on the manager at Villa Park, that might not be a problem for much longer.

Over at Pride Park, Mason Mount has started to show off his dead-ball prowess in addition to his vast array of other skills. The Derby midfielder struck the crossbar from distance in a frustrating goalless draw against Kasey Palmer and Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, before getting it right in Saturday’s 3-1 win over in-form Brentford.

It was the fifth time he’s scored a free-kick in just over a season in professional football, and his fifth goal in Rams colours. Fikayo Tomori helped keep things tight at the other end (whilst also trying his luck with an acrobatic attempt against Blackburn), and continues to earn positive reviews for Frank Lampard’s upwardly-mobile side.

Palmer was impressive early in that 0-0 draw, but he was taken off at half time, and then left on the bench for their 3-2 win at Stoke City.

England

Premier League

Kurt Zouma was on the losing side as Everton were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal.

Kenedy offered relatively little as Newcastle drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace

Championship

Trevoh Chalobah provided the assist for Ipswich’s equaliser in their midweek draw at home to Brentford, but was taken off at half time – not for the first time this season – as the Tractor Boys were held to a 0-0 borefest by Bolton at the weekend.

Tomas Kalas was on the wrong end of a 4-2 defeat for Bristol City at West Brom on Tuesday, and then suffered a broken jaw in a collision with his own player in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Reece James’ Wigan. James was impressive, as he was in their 2-1 win over Hull three days earlier, but Jay Dasilva had to settle for two more matches without getting off the bench.

Todd Kane was rested for that Hull reverse at Wigan, and was restored to the starting line-up for their trip to Reading on Saturday, getting 90 minutes in a 3-0 defeat.

Lewis Baker played a minute or two of football across a pair of Leeds matches, with Jamal Blackman the backup goalkeeper on both occasions, but the pair were given another run-out for the Under-23s last Monday. Izzy Brown remains out with a long-term injury, one that manager Marcelo Bielsa isn’t sure about the status of.

League One

Iké Ugbo played 88 minutes for Scunthorpe in a 1-0 win over a Shrewsbury Town side that continues to overlook Charlie Colkett, and has only won once in nine league matches.

Dujon Sterling was replaced at half time as Coventry capitulated to a 3-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers, conceding all of the goals in the first 23 minutes, and he had a tough time of it in general.

Brad Collins, on loan at Burton, remains out through injury.

League Two

Nathan Baxter helped Yeovil Town set a new club record of 522 minutes without conceding a goal before they eventually lost 3-0 at home to Swindon.

Jacob Maddox was booked as Cheltenham lost 3-1 at Exeter.

Netherlands

In Vitesse’s annual match honouring the Battle of Arnhem, Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter both completed ninety minutes in a dull 1-1 draw against ADO Den Haag, while Charly Musonda missed out through injury.

Kyle Scott played three-quarters of Telstar’s 3-1 defeat at home to Twente, while Fankaty Dabo played the second half of Sparta Rotterdam’s 0-0 draw at TOP Oss.

Spain

Michy Batshuayi’s first start for Valencia saw him get 70 minutes in their controversial 2-0 defeat to Juventus. He was back on the bench for Sunday’s trip to Villarreal, coming on at half time, but failing to help break a 0-0 final score.

Kenneth Omeruo was not involved as Leganés lost 1-0 at Elche, Joao Rodriguez’s hamstring problem kept him out of Tenerife’s trip to Córdoba, and Josimar Quintero was not involved for Lleida.

Italy

Ola Aina played 77 minutes as Torino lost 3-1 to Napoli, whilst Tiemoue Bakayoko got his first ninety minutes for Milan in their 1-0 Europa League win at Dudelange. He then played the last quarter of an hour in a 2-2 draw against Atalanta, for whom Mario Pašalić started before going off at half time.

The Croatian midfielder also spoke to the media ahead of the game and indicated he’s just about done with the Loan Army. Atalanta have a €15m option to buy him.

Germany

Baba Rahman played no part for Schalke in either of their matches this week.

France

Matt Miazga was booked in Nantes’ 2-1 defeat at Lille, and Victorien Angban played all of Metz’s 2-1 reverse away to Paris FC.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard didn’t make the Cercle Brugge matchday squad this weekend.

Scotland

As usual, Ruben Sammut was an unused substitute for Falkirk. Falkirk have lost all six of their league matches this season.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played all of the 1-1 draw in the Belgrade derby as Partizan and Crvena Zvezda shared the spoils on Sunday evening. He hit the crossbar with a 25-yard strike early in the second half.

Brazil

Nathan was an unused substitute for Atlético-MG at Flamengo.
