The Loan Report: August 5-11

We’re off and running in the goals column in the 2019-20 Loan Army season with two to bring you since last weekend. We’ll get to Brazil in due course but, to start with, there was a very enjoyable home debut in South London for a midfielder making his first senior start.

Headliners

Such was the impression Conor Gallagher made in his cameo from the bench in Charlton’s win at Blackburn Rovers on the opening day of the season, Addicks manager Lee Bowyer wasted little time in naming him in the eleven to take on Stoke City seven days later. He was repaid with a Man of the Match performance in a 3-1 win, capped by his maiden professional strike, a smart finish from a neat set piece routine.

Already something of a fan favourite at The Valley, it was clearly a day to remember for Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year.

It was the second goal of the new campaign as Nathan scored for Atlético-MG against Cruzeiro a few hours after last weekend’s Loan Report was published. He was quick to react to a deflected shot and headed home late in the day to secure a 2-0 win.

It wasn’t enough to earn him further consideration against Fluminense this weekend, however, as he remained an unused substitute in that match.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater headed north to Burnley until January 6th this week, too late to play against Southampton, but he should get a fresh opportunity to play at Turf Moor and put himself back in the shop window for a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge.

Championship

Dujon Sterling continues to await his Wigan Athletic debut after missing out on the 3-0 defeat away to Preston North End. Jake Clarke-Salter did make his Birmingham City bow in a midweek League Cup defeat to Portsmouth, but was back on the bench on Saturday in the Championship at home to Bristol City.

Matt Miazga struggled as Reading were beaten 2-1 at Hull and will have better days at the office.

Trevoh Chalobah arrived at Huddersfield too late in the week to feature for them this weekend but manager Jan Siewert expects him to debut in the League Cup this week. The same should apply to Izzy Brown, who will play for Luton Town this season.

League One

Luke McCormick played 79 minutes for Shrewsbury against Milton Keynes in what was described as a bit of a mixed performance overall.

Richard Nartey was an unused substitute for Burton Albion away to Gillingham while Jacob Maddox will join up properly with Tranmere Rovers after agreeing a deadline-day loan to the Wirral for the rest of 19-20.

League Two

Josh Grant joined Plymouth until January on deadline day and was straight into the squad against Colchester two days later, staying on the bench throughout.

Germany

The Bundesliga gets under way next weekend but the DFB-Pokal kicked off the competitive season in Germany this week, where Lewis Baker and Fortuna Dusseldorf required extra time to see off Villingen. Baker played 104 minute in a controlling midfield role and caught the eye on his debut.

A slight knock kept Ethan Ampadu out of RB Leipzig’s 3-2 triumph at Osnabruck.

Netherlands

Charly Musonda played 23 minutes for Vitesse in their 2-0 win away to Willem II as he gradually begins to work his way into Leonid Slutskiy’s plans after a year out through injury.

Iké Ugbo was an unused substitute for Roda against Almere City in second tier action on Friday night.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter’s injury will keep him out for some time as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Italy

There are still two weeks before Mario Pašalić and Atalanta get their new season started.

Turkey

Victor Moses’ Fenerbahce finished their pre-season slate with a defeat at Sivasspor and start their new Super Lig campaign against Gazişehir Gaziantep next Monday.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
