The Loan Report: March 11-17

There are three more goals to bring you in the latest issue of the Loan Report; one from a player very much in people’s attentions, one who might be, and a third who is not so much.

Headliners

The latter came from Danilo Pantic, a Serbian forward who hasn’t quite made the progress Chelsea would have hoped him to in the four years since adding him to the Loan Army. A return to Partizan Belgrade last season kick-started his career after two very stagnant years in the Netherlands, and he was named in the Serbian League’s Team of the Season, a welcome return to prominence.

He hasn’t quite hit those heights this term, with injuries causing him to miss some time, but he was back in form in midweek with this superb free kick in a 4-0 win over Napredak to take Partizan into the Serbian Cup Semi Finals.

As if to tempt fate, however, he lasted just 40 minutes of Saturday’s league defeat to Spartak Subotica before succumbing to another knock.

Michy Batshuayi was also in cup goalscoring form, equalising for Crystal Palace against Watford, but a trip to Wembley will not be in the offing as the Eagles were edged out by the Hornets at Vicarage Road.

In Serie A, Tiémoué Bakayoko found an opportune moment to score his first Milan goal, as it came in the Derby Della Madonnina against Inter on Sunday. His terrific header gave his team a fighting chance, reducing a two-goal deficit, but they couldn’t complete the comeback and lost 3-2.

England

Premier League

Kenedy was an unused substitute as Newcastle drew at Bournemouth while Kurt Zouma couldn’t play for Everton against Chelsea due to Premier League rules preventing players from featuring against their parent clubs.

Championship

It was an interesting week for Reece James. He captured the attention for a midfield highlight against Blackburn that perfectly encapsulated his all-action midfield style, but also conceded a penalty in a 3-0 defeat.

On Saturday, that was all forgotten as he and Wigan smashed Bolton 5-2, and he provided an assist with a well-taken early free kick, before also introducing much bigger and more seasoned players to his particular brand of football.

Trevoh Chalobah returned from injury to claim the Man of the Match award for Ipswich against Tomas Kalas, substitute Kasey Palmer and Bristol City in midweek, and he was in just as good nick on Saturday as Town drew with Nottingham Forest, earning the award again. They’ll almost certainly be relegated, but it won’t be because of Trev’s performances.

Jay Dasilva was rested for Bristol City’s midweek outing, and the Robins then had the weekend off as they were due to play Millwall, who had an FA Cup tie to play instead.

Michael Hector and Sheffield Wednesday beat Bolton and Blackburn to thrust themselves into the playoff conversation, and the Jamaican international continues to be a key player at centre-back.

Lewis Baker and Matt Miazga played ninety minutes for a Reading team outclassed by a much better Leeds United side, but battled back well to draw away to Stoke on Saturday, with each player getting another full outing apiece. Izzy Brown was an unused sub for Leeds in the first of those, before missing out on their defeat to Sheffield United four days later through illness.

Tammy Abraham’s slightly dry spell saw him shut out by Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough, leaving him with one goal in his last seven starts, but as Aston Villa won both of those matches and moved into the playoff places, he won’t be too worried. They took the place of Derby County, who drew 0-0 against Stoke in midweek with Fikayo Tomori at the heart of their defence, but they too had the weekend off, and will hope to welcome Mason Mount back from injury after the international break.

Todd Kane started and finished for Hull in a midweek defeat at Norwich City and was rested for Saturday’s draw with QPR.

League One

Brad Collins and Burton bounced back from a midweek defeat away to Charlton by beating Blackpool 3-0 on Saturday, the Chelsea goalkeeper recording his tenth clean sheet of the season in his 30th appearance. He preserved that shutout with a good late save.

Dujon Sterling played every second of a pair of 2-1 wins for Coventry City, against Fleetwood and Peterborough, that moved them to within a point of the playoffs.

League Two

Yeovil’s slide towards relegation continued with defeats to Port Vale and Macclesfield, two teams in and around them at the foot of the table, and there was nothing Nathan Baxter or Josh Grant could do despite each player featuring throughout both contests.

Jacob Maddox has fallen a little out of favour at Cheltenham in the last couple of weeks, perhaps with a nod to the sheer volume of football he’s played in his first professional season, and he saw just three minutes on the pitch in the midweek defeat to Newport County.

Non-League

Jack Wakely and Basingstoke lost 4-1 to Dorchester Town.

Italy

Ola Aina was sent off in stoppage time at the end of Torino’s 3-2 defeat to Bologna; the defender was booked for a foul he disagreed with, and was subsequently shown a second yellow card for his reaction to the decision.

Mario Pašalić played a quarter of an hour for Atalanta against a Chievo team that left Lucas Piazon on the bench in their 1-1 draw.

Spain

In a forgettable week for Alvaro Morata, he was left scoreless as Atlético Madrid lost 3-0 to Juventus and were eliminated from the Champions League, and then a 2-0 reverse away to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday might well have ended any faint dreams of challenging Barcelona for the league title.

Kenneth Omeruo and Leganés were beaten 2-0 at home by Girona, and Josi Quintero was an unused substitute as Lleida drew with Hercules in the third tier.

Netherlands

Eduardo was in goal as Vitesse lost 3-2 to Heracles, with Jake Clarke-Salter and Charly Musonda still out with injury.

Fankaty Dabo claimed an assist as Sparta Rotterdam won 3-1 at Almere City to stay second in the Eerste Divisie.

Germany

Christian Pulisic played ninety minutes as Dortmund beat Hertha Berlin 3-2 to stay joint-top of the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

France

Baba Rahman and Reims beat Nantes 1-0 to go sixth in Ligue 1, while Victorien Angban played ten minutes at the end of Metz’s 3-0 win at Niort in the second tier.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard is still out with injury over at Cercle Brugge.

Turkey

Victor Moses was credited with a rather dubious assist as Fenerbahce beat Sivasspor 2-1 on Friday night.

Northern Ireland

Jared Thompson’s performance in Warrenpoint’s 1-0 win away to Ards earned him Team of the Week honours just days after he earned his first call-up to the Northern Ireland Under-21 squad.

Brazil

Nathan was an unused substitute as Atlético-MG lost 1-0 to Nacional in midweek Copa Libertadores action.
