The Loan Report: November 18-24

With the last international break of 2019 firmly in the rear view mirror, the Loan Report is back to check in on Chelsea’s far-flung charges, with Iké Ugbo and Conor Gallagher taking centre stage as they have for most of the season.

Headliners

Gallagher has been outstanding in his first four months in senior football, starring for Charlton Athletic in England’s second tier, and shining bright when the spotlight is on him. Having scored his first England Under-21 goal a week earlier, he carried that form back into his club game this weekend, notching his sixth of the season for the Addicks in their 2-2 draw against Cardiff City live on Sky Sports.

Ugbo isn’t playing at the same standard, but the Dutch second tier has suited him just fine so far, with goals against Dordrecht last weekend and Go Ahead Eagles this taking him into double figures for the campaign at Roda.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater is back on the pitch, featuring in behind closed doors action for Burnley’s Under-23s this week, but is yet to feature in the Premier League. With just over a month left on his loan from Stamford Bridge, the ill-fated agreement looks an increasing waste of everyone’s time.

Championship

Izzy Brown returned from a brief injury layoff to provide another assist for Luton Town in a 2-1 defeat to his former club Leeds. It was a reminder of what Marcelo Bielsa perhaps failed to use last season at Elland Road and, as Brown sits second in the league for goals created, Luton might struggle to retain his services if bigger teams come sniffing when the transfer window opens.

Trevoh Chalobah also claimed an assist for Huddersfield in their draw against Jake Clarke-Salter and Birmingham and, most importantly, Chalobah joined Clarke-Salter in playing the full match as a centre-back. So often used in midfield by the Terriers, and Ipswich before them, he continues to do his best work in defence and Danny Cowley might hopefully have seen the light after this weekend. Check out that pass too.

Another defender, Matt Miazga, was present throughout as Reading lost at Brentford, while Dujon Sterling was an unused substitute for Wigan against Stoke City.

League One

Richard Nartey played all ninety minutes as Burton went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Peterborough United.

Luke McCormick and Jacob Maddox were unused substitutes.

League Two

Josh Grant continued in his new midfield role for Plymouth, playing a full match and helping Argyle to a 2-1 win at home to Bradford.

Italy

Mario Pašalić played from start to finish as Atalanta lost 3-1 at home to Juventus.

Davide Zappacosta is out for the season.

Spain

Kenedy played the last twelve minutes of Getafe’s draw at Espanyol, but Baba Rahman remains out at Mallorca.

Germany

Ethan Ampadu and Lewis Baker spent their weekends as unused substitutes for RB Leipzig and Fortuna Dusseldorf respectively.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko returned from injury with 82 minutes and a yellow card as Monaco lost 2-1 at Bordeaux.

Netherlands

A year after suffering a broken leg playing for Leeds’ Under-23 team, Jamal Blackman returned to training, finally linking up with Vitesse after completing his rehab at Chelsea. He isn’t in line to play just yet but, as Remko Pasveer and company lost 2-0 at Sparta Rotterdam, opportunities could come sooner rather than later.

Juan Castillo assisted a late winner for Brian Brobbey as Jong Ajax beat NAC Breda 2-1 in the Eerste Divisie.

Portugal

Rio Ave beat Alverca 1-0 in the Portuguese Cup without Lucas Piazon making the match day squad.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter made his long-awaited Ross County debut on Saturday, four months after suffering a shoulder injury in pre-season, and performed well despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at St Mirren.

Turkey

Victor Moses played ninety for Fenerbahce vs Yeni Malatyaspor.

Hungary

Danilo Pantic played the first half as MOL Fehervar lost 3-1 to Puskas Akademia.

Brazil

Nathan is injured for the rest of 2019.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
