The Loan Report: November 4-10

Mario Pašalić announced himself on the Champions League stage this week while Iké Ugbo carried on his prolific form in the Netherlands. Let’s get into the latest Loan Report.

Headliners

Pašalić’s second season with Atalanta has been a bit of a slow burner in terms of substantial performances; playing regular minutes in the midfield rotation, he’s an entirely reliable and capable option, but has added goals back into his game again in recent weeks to improve his stock further still. Against Manchester City in midweek Champions League action, he scored a most typical goal, arriving late from midfield to meet a delivery from outside and finish emphatically.

He completed another ninety minutes on Sunday against Serie A strugglers Sampdoria, and Chelsea will certainly be paying close attention, as they continue to consider whether he’s worth pursuing options that would allow him to play in England. Born in Germany but without a German passport, he has required a work permit to play in the UK ever since signing despite Croatia’s accession to the EU, but with restrictions on their freedom of movement expiring last June, the most obvious bureaucratic barrier to a career at Stamford Bridge has now been removed.

Back on the pitch, Iké Ugbo grabbed his seventh and eighth goals of the season – including the controversial one against NAC Breda a few weeks ago – against Jong PSV and Cambuur at either end of the week.

He spoke to Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella this week about his journey so far, and it’s worth your time to read.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater isn’t back fit yet, but he’s close, according to Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Championship

Conor Gallagher and Charlton lost late in their South London derby away to Millwall, while Trevoh Chalobah and Huddersfield saw their seven-match unbeaten run come to an end at second-placed Preston, with the Chelsea man reportedly struggling in a rare ninety-minute outing.

Dujon Sterling continued at right-back for Wigan but he too was up against it as Brentford left the DW Stadium with a handsome 3-0 win, but Izzy Brown wasn’t quite fit enough to play for Luton at Reading after suffering a hamstring complaint, and watched from the stands as Matt Miagza and the Royals also won 3-0.

Jake Clarke-Salter was afforded a league start for Birmingham for just the third time all season, playing from start to finish in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham.

League One

Richard Nartey was rested for Burton’s draw at Salford City in the FA Cup, with this lengthy look-in at his progress so far covering his importance to the Brewers already.

Luke McCormick was an unused substitute for Shrewsbury Town, while Tranmere drew with Wycombe without calling upon the services of Jacob Maddox.

League Two

Josh Grant provided an assist for the only goal as Plymouth won 1-0 at Bolton in the FA Cup.

Spain

Kenedy played just over twenty minutes as Getafe lost to Basel in Thursday night Europa League action, then started in La Liga on Sunday at home to Osasuna and played 81 minutes.

Baba Rahman is, as always, injured at Mallorca.

Italy

Davide Zappacosta is out for the season.

Germany

Ethan Ampadu saw ten more minutes of substitute action as Leipzig won 4-2 at Hertha BSC on Saturday, while Lewis Baker was an unused substitute in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 3-3 draw at Schalke, and hasn’t played in the Bundesliga since September 22nd.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko is still sidelined through injury.

Netherlands

Juan Castillo – who is producing the goods from a statistical perspective – played a pair of full matches for Jong Ajax this week, helping them bounce back from a 3-1 defeat to Volendam on Monday with a 5-1 thumping of Den Bosch on Friday in which he was credited with his first assist of the season.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon didn’t make the match day squad as Rio Ave beat Vitoria de Setubal, and has just 49 minutes of league action to his name this season.

Scotland

We’re almost there now as Nathan Baxter was the substitute goalkeeper for Ross County in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen. It won’t be long until he’s finally able to make a long-awaited debut for the Dingwall club.

Turkey

Victor Moses helped Fenerbahce beat Kasimpasa in an eventful Friday night match; the 3-2 victory leaving them just a point shy of Sivasspor at the top of the league after eleven rounds.

Hungary

Danilo Pantic played the last ten minutes of MOL Fehervar’s 2-0 win at Kaposvári Rákóczi.

Brazil

Nathan has suffered a thigh injury that will reportedly rule him out for the rest of 2019 and, therefore, the remainder of the Brazilian Serie A season.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
