The Loan Report: October 21-27

Iké Ugbo and Mario Pašalić brought the goals this week in another productive seven days for the Loan Army.

Headliners

Ugbo wasn’t initially credited with Roda’s opening goal in Friday’s 4-2 win over NAC Breda, as it appeared to belong to Roland Alberg, but closer inspection showed that Ugbo got the slightest of touches to it. As a striker, and as someone challenging for the golden boot, he was certain to claim it, and Roda later corrected their own statistics to give him his sixth of the season. He later weighed in with an assist too.

There was considerably less controversy about Pašalić’s first of the campaign on Sunday as he scored the fifth of fifth of seven Atalanta goals against Udinese. Having played the second half of a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Manchester City in midweek Champions League action, the Nerazzurri bounced back in style, and are quite clearly Serie A’s third-best team at this point in time.

England

Premier League

Even if Danny Drinkwater was fit, he wouldn’t have been able to play against Chelsea this weekend due to Premier League loan rules.

Championship

Izzy Brown now has six assists for the season after claiming one in each of Luton’s fixtures this week. His free kick led to Dan Potts scoring in their defeat at Fulham on Wednesday, before hard work and smart play set up Harry Cornick in a 2-1 reverse at Birmingham on Saturday. Playing centrally between two wide forwards, he has the freedom to drop deeper in possession and orchestrate accordingly, and in playing his first full back-to-back ninety minutes in two and a half years, he finally appears to be back in the swing of things.

Conor Gallagher didn’t add to his impressive statistical output this week for Charlton, but he did play well in tough away fixtures at Bristol City and West Brom, continuing to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship, regardless of age or experience.

Dujon Sterling made his long-awaited league debut for Wigan Athletic in midweek at Derby, then held on to his starting right-back berth and played well in a 2-2 draw at Bristol City on Sunday.

Trevoh Chalobah played 78 minutes across two Huddersfield Town fixtures this week as the Terriers continue their resurgence under Danny Cowley, a manager who rates his young loanee considerably highly.

League One

Richard Nartey was at the heart of two consecutive clean sheets for Burton Albion this week as they beat Wimbledon before drawing with Blackpool. He left the second fixture seven minutes early, hobbling slightly, but doesn’t seem to be too badly injured.

Jacob Maddox has had to wait a long time to be involved at Tranmere Rovers, having joined on loan at the end of August, but finally made a matchday squad this week. He didn’t come on during a heavy defeat to Sunderland, and their home clash with Doncaster on Saturday was postponed, but he finally looks set to make his first appearance of the season before much longer.

Luke McCormick was an unused substitute for Shrewsbury against Sunderland on Saturday.

League Two

Josh Grant played ninety minutes as Plymouth lost 4-0 to Exeter, conceding what was a soft penalty along the way.

Kenedy’s first ninety minutes for Getafe came in their Europa League defeat at home to Basel on Thursday. He was back on the bench in La Liga on Sunday, coming on for the last quarter of an hour in a defeat at Sevilla.
