The Loan Report: September 16-22

A quiet seven days on the loan front brought us little by way of goals or headliners, but plenty of development nonetheless, so let’s get stuck in.

Headliners

Conor Gallagher has been the star of the show so far this term, starting his career in the professional game with a small handful of goals and assists at Charlton, form that this week earned him the EFL Championship Player of the Month award.

Also name-dropped by Frank Lampard as someone with the potential to break through into the first-team set-up at Stamford Bridge, he got another ninety minutes for the Addicks at a Dujon Sterling-less Wigan on Saturday, but wound up on the losing side.

Sterling, meanwhile, finally surfaced earlier this week when he turned out for the Latics’ Development Squad. Manager Paul Cook, citing a lack of fitness, addressed a situation that had gone without a response until Friday.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater remains out through injury and, in a week where another unsavoury allegation was made against him concerning his behaviour away from the pitch, you might ask yourselves why Chelsea are bothering to retain his registration.

Championship

Izzy Brown, who has earned a starting place in the Luton Town midfield these days, played 64 minutes in a 3-0 defeat to Hull City. Playing a deeper role than many people will have seen him in, he has the quality to execute it, but the Hatters were beaten by a better team on the day.

Trevoh Chalobah played ninety minutes for Huddersfield as they let a 2-1 lead slip to a 4-2 defeat at West Brom, while Jake Clarke-Salter was an unused substitute for Birmingham on his birthday weekend, and Matt Miazga missed out injured for Reading against Blackburn.

League One

Richard Nartey continued at centre-half for Burton as they travelled down to Portsmouth in midweek, and then up to Tranmere at the weekend. Neither match resulted in victory but the young defender continues to impress.

Luke McCormick played no part for Shrewsbury in either of their midweek fixtures, while Jacob Maddox has been back at Chelsea recovering from the injury that has so far prevented him from making his Tranmere debut.

League Two

Josh Grant, on the other hand, has played himself into a regular role on the right of Plymouth’s back three, and featured for every second of their matches against Crawley and Cheltenham this week.

Spain

Kenedy’s Getafe debut came in the Europa League against Trabzonspor, where he played 77 minutes in a 1-0 win. His La Liga bow came three days later as an 89th-minute substitute against Baba Rahman’s Mallorca. Baba, unfortunately, lasted just 19 minutes before being forced off through injury.

Italy

Mario Pašalić’s return to Champions League football ended in embarrassment as his Atalanta team were beaten 4-0 by Dinamo Zagreb, the fierce rivals of his boyhood club, Hajduk Split. He came on at half time with three of the four goals already having been conceded.

On Sunday against Fiorentina, he thought he’d scored to rescue a last-gasp draw with his team having been 2-0 down. The goal was disallowed by VAR, but Timothy Castagne struck moments later anyway, and Atalanta earned a draw.

Davide Zappacosta is still injured and unable to play for Roma.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko played ninety minutes as Monaco drew 0-0 at Reims.

Germany

Another week came and went without Ethan Ampadu getting on the pitch for RB Leipzig. A knock kept him from making the match day squad away to Benfica in the Champions League and, although he was back on the bench for the league win at Werder Bremen on Saturday, there he remained throughout.

Lewis Baker did however start for Fortuna Dusseldorf away to Borussia Mönchengladbach and played an hour in which his team held a 1-0 lead. He was substituted, Gladbach went on to win 2-1, and that’s that.

Netherlands

Vitesse’s annual tribute match for the British 1st Airborne Division saw them beat Fortuna Sittard 4-2 to go top of the Eredivisie, albeit temporarily, and without Charly Musonda or Jamal Blackman available. Still, their start to the season has been very impressive, and they look set to challenge at the business end of the standings for a while to come.

Juan Castillo played from start to finish as Jong Ajax drew 1-1 at Go Ahead Eagles, while Utrecht held Iké Ugbo off the scoresheet as they beat Roda 3-1.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon played the last five minutes of Rio Ave’s 2-0 win at Belenenses.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter is still injured.

Turkey

Victor Moses is still injured.

Hungary

Danilo Pantic’s MOL Fehervar debut saw him play well for 67 minutes of their 4-2 cup win at Eger.

Brazil

Nathan played seven minutes as a substitute in Atlético-MG’s 2-1 Copa Sudamericana defeat to Colón.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
