The Loan Report: February 17-23

It was a quiet week on the Loan Army front but, for one or two Chelsea players, it was nevertheless an important one.

Headliners

Kenedy takes the plaudits for his third goal of the season, a late effort off the bench that helped Getafe beat Ajax 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 match. It took a little deflection on its way in, but it was a good goal nonetheless.

He got slightly more time from the bench against Sevilla on Sunday but wasn’t able to add to his tally.

Mario Pašalić’s time at Atalanta continues to go from strength to strength; he wasn’t on the scoresheet this week but, in playing a part in two of their four goals against Valencia in midweek, he put the Nerazzurri in a commanding position to reach the last eight of the Champions League.

To give a sense of just how remarkable an achievement that would be, Atalanta have a wage bill roughly similar to that of Reading, sitting in the bottom half of England’s second tier. Pašalić is almost certain to sign permanently in Bergamo this summer, and their story could get even better still.

Their match against Sassuolo on Sunday was postponed along with five other Serie A matches due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation.

The Champions League also afforded Ethan Ampadu the opportunity to remind everyone that he is a wonderful young footballer in his own right, as he made light of Leipzig’s defensive personnel problems by leading the Germans to a 1-0 win away to Tottenham Hotspur. He was, in every sense of the word, outstanding.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater was an unused substitute as Aston Villa lost 2-0 at Southampton.

Championship

Another week, another assist for Conor Gallagher. His latest helper sent Swansea on their way to a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town and saw him surpass Mason Mount’s combined goal contribution from his stay at Derby County last season; no mean feat in itself.

Marc Guehi was taken out of the firing line by manager Steve Cooper after a couple of unsteady recent performances, while Trevoh Chalobah was an unused substitute for the visitors.

Jake Clarke-Salter and Birmingham played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday, extending their recent unbeaten run, although he was withdrawn fifteen minutes from time with a minor knock. Manager Pep Clotet explained afterwards that he would have been able to continue if needed, but he felt the experience of Harlee Dean from the bench was required at that stage of the game.

Izzy Brown missed Luton’s defeat at Charlton through illness while Matt Miazga (Reading) and Dujon Sterling (Wigan) are still injured.

League One

Jamal Blackman was in goal as Bristol Rovers lost 3-0 away to promotion-chasing Sunderland.

Richard Nartey missed Burton’s win at Southend through the injury picked up at Ipswich last weekend.

League Two

Josh Grant lasted for just 32 minutes of Plymouth’s midweek draw at Macclesfield before leaving with a calf injury that has seen him return to Chelsea for medical assessment. He therefore missed Argyle’s goalless draw with Cambridge four days later.

Spain

Baba Rahman is still injured.

Italy

Victor Moses played 72 minutes for Inter in their Europa League win at Ludogorets on Thursday, while Sunday’s clash with Sampdoria was postponed.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko played from start to finish as Monaco drew 1-1 at Dijon.

Netherlands

Juan Familia-Castillo was back in for Jong Ajax on Monday night but was on the wrong end of a 4-2 defeat by NAC Breda. He bounced back on Friday with an assist in a 2-0 win at Helmond Sport.

George McEachran played most of the second half as Cambuur extended their lead at the top of the table by beating Roda 2-0, with Iké Ugbo playing ninety minutes for the visitors.

Belgium

Charlie Brown made his first senior start for Union SG by playing an hour in a dramatic 5-3 win away to OH Leuven.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon was taken off at half time as Rio Ave beat Tondela 2-1.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter was on the bench as Ross County beat Aberdeen 2-1 at Pittodrie.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
