The Loan Report: March

March has been a generally quiet month on the loan front and, with the international break in full swing, we’ll take this opportunity to give a quick one-liner on every single loanee currently out and about as we gear up for the last part of the club season.

Ethan Ampadu
Chris Wilder is out as manager at Sheffield United and Ampadu’s attention will turn towards his next move once the season at Bramall Lane comes to an end; he’s been a regular feature for most of the campaign in defence, but is there a midfield future instead?

Tiémoué Bakayoko
Solid and quietly impressive in a good midfield at Napoli, a Europa League exit to Granada means attentions now turn towards CL qualification in a fight with Atalanta and Juventus.

Lewis Baker
A regular for Trabzonspor for much of the season, Baker started just once in four league matches in March as they look to secure Europa League qualification at worst.

Nathan Baxter
One of League One’s outstanding goalkeepers this season, Nathan’s season may be over after suffering a shoulder injury against Ipswich three weeks ago. It’s the other shoulder to the one he injured last season at Ross County.

Ross Barkley
Didn’t start a match in March and instead made four appearances from the bench. Aston Villa won none of those four matches.

Michy Batshuayi
Hasn’t played since mid-February and yet to feature for Belgium during this international break; why he stayed at Palace in the winter transfer window is increasingly confusing.

Jamal Blackman
Has been in and out of the Rotherham team splitting time with Viktor Johansson, outplaying him 21 starts to 13 so far, but a job share is an unusual situation for most goalkeepers to be in, let alone a 27 year-old loanee probably looking to settle down somewhere this summer.

Armando Broja
Still Europe’s top scoring teenager, he continues to impress for Vitesse and is growing his game with each performance. Started for Albania against England this weekend.

Izzy Brown
A change in manager at Sheffield Wednesday hasn’t yielded much more playing time, with just one league start since September. Recent appearances for the Owls’ Under-23 team have yielded a goal and a red card.

Juan Castillo
Has already surpassed his minutes at AZ since swapping loans to join ADO Den Haag but, after starting five of his first six games there, he’s started just two of the next six.

Trevoh Chalobah
Growing in confidence with every outing at Lorient, he profiles as a high-level ball winner and disruptor in a top-end European league. Has the quality to push on and play to a very good standard somewhere next season.

Jamie Cumming
Kept six straight clean sheets and went almost 700 minutes without conceding a goal as Stevenage eased relegation troubles to move into mid-table. On course to move on up the ladder next season.

Jake Clarke-Salter
Has a fourth manager in less than two years at Birmingham and will be hoping to build on a strong return to form and fitness in February when Lee Bowyer really gets down to work after Easter.

Danny Drinkwater
Found the sunny Turkish climbs of Kasimpasa more to his liking than the Chelsea Development Squad and has made five appearances for the relegation-threatened SuperLig outfit since settling there in February.

Conor Gallagher
An established presence in Sam Allardyce’s team, West Brom’s relegation is unlikely to affect his stock, and is with the England Under-21 squad for the European Championships group stages.

Marco van Ginkel
Four brief substitute appearances represent a comeback almost complete after spending two and a half years on the sidelines through injury. That he’s back at all is outstanding news.

Marc Guehi
Swansea’s battle for promotion continues and, with Guehi as impressive as ever, it seems certain he’ll be playing top-flight football in 2020-21. The question is where, but it’s also under what terms?

Kenedy
Has had a quietly impressive season for a Granada team in the last eight of the Europa League and in the top half of the league table. Has carved out a role for himself accentuating what he does well.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Approaching a cross-roads in his career as minutes and fitness are no longer a concern; Fulham are fighting hard to avoid relegation, but at 25 years old, a decisive summer lies ahead.

Ian Maatsen
Rested for a while under Lee Bowyer after a lengthy run of games, Maatsen came back into the fold properly in March with six straight full 90s, and he’ll now push for the playoffs under new manager Nigel Adkins.

Luke McCormick
Despite managerial uncertainty, Luke has shown the quality and the consistency to make him one of the first names on the team sheet for Bristol Rovers, and a fan favourite who many would like to see join them permanently.

Matt Miazga
Has enjoyed a perfectly unremarkable season in defence for Anderlecht, who are 21 points adrift of Club Brugge in the Belgian top flight.

Victor Moses
Moses played just under two matches after a two-month winter break for Spartak Moscow before picking up an injury that will sideline him for six to eight weeks. Has done well when he’s been fit but has less than 800 minutes to his name this term.

Danilo Pantic
Ticking along as normal with Cukaricki as they fight Vojvodina for a Europa League place.

Baba Rahman
Scored on his PAOK debut and has been a regular feature in the short time since.

Jonathan Russell
Went past 1000 minutes played for Accrington this season over the weekend but, after a strong run of form and playing time in the late autumn, has been confined to mainly a role as a substitute since.

Malang Sarr
Has played almost as many Champions League minutes (419) as league minutes (564) despite fewer opportunities to play, which is unusual. UEFA rules will allow him to play in the upcoming last eight ties.

Fikayo Tomori
Has quickly proven his quality for Milan and has stoked discussion that the Rossoneri are going to pay the €25m+€5m fee to make his loan stay a permanent one.

Iké Ugbo
A prolific first half of the season has given way to leaner times since Christmas, with just two of his 12 goals coming in 2021. Has done enough to set him up for a good 2021-22 move though.

Tariq Uwakwe
Like Russell, has been mostly used as a substitute for Accrington despite a bright start, although injuries have played their part. Didn’t play a single minute in March because of his latest layoff.

Davide Zappacosta
Doing a solid job for a solid mid-table Serie A team in Genoa, which is exactly what you might have expected to read at this point.
