The Loan Report: September 18-24

Another productive week on loan land saw goals, new experiences, and big wins across the board. We’ll begin, as usual, with those finding the back of the net.

Headliners

Tammy Abraham has made a generally impressive start to his season in Swansea, netting against both Crystal Palace and MK Dons in his first month, and putting in a number of hard-working displays often as a lone striker. Some eyebrows were therefore raised when he was only named as a substitute for the visit of Watford in the league on Saturday, but any concerns were quickly assuaged when he showed off his top-class instincts by poaching an equaliser shortly after coming off the bench.

 

It brought a positive end to an interesting week for the 19 year-old forward, who was subject of much speculation regarding his international future. Amidst reports from the Nigerian FA that he was set to commit to the Super Eagles, Abraham has subsequently denied that he is to pursue such a move, and will remain with England for the forthcoming internationals at the very least.

On Sunday, PSV won 7-1 at Utrecht in their biggest away league win in almost 30 years, and Marco van Ginkel contributed to the effort with a late penalty.

 

England

Premier League

Ruben Loftus-Cheek caught the eye against as Crystal Palace briefly flirted with causing problems for Manchester City before eventually capitulating to a 5-0 defeat. Loftus-Cheek hit the post with an early deflected effort, and then scuffed a much better chance wide when he should have done better, and instead of being a goal to the good Palace eventually conceded themselves and subsequently fell apart.

It’s clear at this point that he is as good of a player as Palace have, particularly with Christian Benteke having a potentially season-ending injury, but as they continue to toil at the foot of the table, it could be an increasingly frustrating exercise watching him play without a great deal of support.

Izzy Brown made his comeback from injury for Brighton against Newcastle as an unused substitute, Kasey Palmer is working towards fitness against Huddersfield, whilst Kurt Zouma was ineligible to feature for Stoke City against Chelsea due to Premier League rules, but did turn out for the Potters in their League Cup exit to Bristol City in midweek.

Championship

Iké Ugbo had a noteworth experience on Tuesday night as he started up front for Barnsley away to Tottenham in the League Cup at Wembley. He played well too, and should have come away with a goal, but let the moment go and the Tykes were eventually beaten by a solitary Dele Alli effort.

Lewis Baker helped Middlesbrough to a 1-1 draw away to Tomas Kalas’ Fulham as both loanees completed ninety minutes at Craven Cottage, whilst Jeremie Boga was lively in Lee Carsley’s first match as Birmingham manager, following Harry Redknapp’s departure last week. The Ivorian completed 63 minutes in a hard-working 1-1 draw at Derby.

Hull also drew 1-1 at Reading with Fikayo Tomori, Michael Hector and Fikayo Tomori all featuring from first to last, and they might have claimed a much-needed win had a late Jon Dadi Bodvarsson goal not denied them. That goal materialised after a poor defensive header by Tomori, an unfortunate moment that blighted an otherwise excellent display from the England Under-21 defender, who even came close to scoring a sensational solo effort.

Jamal Blackman emerged victorious from a full-blodded Steel City derby as Sheffield United beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 in their first meeting for six years. The big stopper has been ever-present in the league so far this season but, with the experienced Simon Moore nearing a return from injury, it will be interesting to see if manager Chris Wilder sticks with his loan star.

League One

Jordan Houghton played an hour for Doncaster away to Arsenal in midweek League Cup action and, most encouragingly, followed that up with a hugely impressive 90 minutes and a 3-0 win away to former club Plymouth. It was the first time that the midfielder has played back-to-back matches inside of the same week since returning from a torn ACL suffered in February, and suggests he is close to full fitness once again.

Jay Dasilva drew more plaudits from Charlton supporters following the Addicks’ 1-1 draw with Bury as he goes from strength to strength on loan in South-East London.

League Two

Brad Collins and Forest Green Rovers lost 2-0 at home to Swindon in something of a derby match on Friday night. He’ll be disappointed with the second goal in particular.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter received a bit of positive press this week, after recording his first clean sheet for the Cards last time out (featuring the double-save below), and used that to help Anthony Limbrick’s boys to a 2-1 win away to AFC Fylde that moves them into the playoff places.

Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town hammered Hemel Hempstead Town 5-1 to move into mid-table safety in the National League South.

Netherlands

It’s been quite a week in Arnhem. On Wednesday night Fankaty Dabo, Matt Miazga, and Mason Mount for the first time all started, whilst Charlie Colkett came on as a sub, in Vitesse’ fixture against Swift Boys in the first match in the defence of the Dutch Cup they famously won in Rotterdam back in April.

They duly lost on penalties and were eliminated by the fifth-tier amateur outfit from Amsterdam.

Dabo and Miazga retained their places for the league trip back to the Dutch capital on Sunday to face Ajax, where the odds were upset again as Vitesse won 2-1 to record a league win there for the first time since 2013. Colkett and Mount were unused substitutes but former Blue Mukhtar Ali played half an hour in midfield.

Todd Kane missed out for Groningen this week through injury.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played all ninety minutes as Waasland-Beveren were beaten 2-1 by Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday night.

France

Nathan was not involved as Amiens lost 1-0 away to Caen in Ligue 1.

Russia

Mario Pašalić played 85 minutes against Kuban Krasnodar in the cup and then 77 minutes in the league on Saturday as Spartak Moscow drew 2-2 for the second week running, this time at home to Anzhi Makhachkala.

Josimar Quintero finally made his debut for FC Rostov this week, getting 23 minutes in their Cup win away to Volgar Astrakhan, but he was back on the bench again versus Lokomotiv Moscow in the league.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic was an unused substitute as Partizan drew 1-1 with Napredak in midweek before starting and completing 64 minutes against Rad on Sunday.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo made the first start of his second spell with Kasimpasa in a 1-1 draw against Kayserispor.

Mexico

There were no fixtures in the Mexican Liga Ascenso this weekend, but Joao Rodriguez has now joined up with his team-mates at Tampico Madero, with the move having been delayed due to the hurricanes affecting the region in recent weeks.
