Last week’s goal-filled Loan Report is followed, typically, by a much quieter edition this weekend. There was one goal to report on however, scored way back last Monday, and it came courtesy of Mario Pašalić.
Headliners
Pašalić’s Spartak Moscow hosted Zenit St Petersburg in one of the most keenly-anticipated fixtures of the Russian Premier League season, and it was the Croatian midfielder who helped to seal a 3-1 win with a goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Coming off the bench on 76 minutes, he showcased his trademark energy and desire to get into the box to cap a big win for Spartak.
He was rewarded with ninety minutes on Friday away to Arsenal Tula in a 1-0 win that keeps them in the hunt for a Champions League place.
England
Premier League
Kasey Palmer finally returned to the pitch for Huddersfield this weekend as the Terriers lost 2-0 to Everton. Absent since August 26th through injury, the 21 year-old came on at half time at Goodison Park, but was unable to help his team to a result.
Izzy Brown, meanwhile, was handed his first league start for Brighton since the opening day of the season, as Liverpool came to town. The Reds ran out 5-1 winners, but Brown was one of the Seagulls’ best performers on the day, and he would have come away with an assist had Glenn Murray been able to finish the simplest of opportunities created by the young loanee.
Brown had received his customary late cameo earlier in the week as Brighton hosted rivals Crystal Palace in a goalless draw. Ruben Loftus-Cheek got ninety minutes there, and then again away to Wes Brom on Saturday in another 0-0, but he too could have had an assist if not for some questionable Crystal Palace finishing. It’s been the story of his season, but at least he’s played every minute since the last international break, and appears to be finally putting together a strong run of appearances.
Kurt Zouma helped Stoke beat Tammy Abraham’s Swansea 2-1 on Saturday after losing out 3-0 to Liverpool and former blue Dominic Solanke in midweek. Abraham had the midweek off as Swansea lost to his parent club, with loan rules prohibiting his involvement.
Championship
Iké Ugbo started for Barnsley in their 3-0 defeat to Derby on Tuesday, but was substituted at half time, and was then an unused sub in another reverse at Bolton on Saturday.
Jamal Blackman and Sheffield United suffered a rare defeat, going down 3-1 at Millwall, whilst Fikayo Tomori was the only Hull loanee to start the Tigers’ 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday. Ola Aina was an unused substitute, whilst Michael Hector was absent altogether. Lewis Baker, of course, still can’t get into a Middlesbrough team so blessed with talent that they lost 2-1 to Bristol City and now find themselves six points adrift of the playoff places.
Tomas Kalas and Fulham were beaten 3-1 at West London rivals Brentford, leaving Jeremie Boga and Birmingham to hopefully brighten a dismal round of Championship loanee action, as they host Wolves on Monday. Don’t put your house on it.
League One
FA Cup Second Round weekend brought mixed fortunes for the two Chelsea loanees at League One teams. A Doncaster Rovers team without Jordan Houghton, who picked up a knock last weekend (but subsequently trained fine), cruised past Scunthorpe 3-0, but Jay Dasilva and Charlton were beaten 3-1 at AFC Wimbledon with the left-back hitting the crossbar in the first half.
League Two
Brad Collins and Forest Green Rovers had a busy Saturday in a 3-3 draw at home to Exeter City.
Non-League
Nathan Baxter helped write some more headlines in his burgeoning career down at Woking, as the Cards held League One’s Peterborough to a 1-1 FA Cup draw, and will now take their place in the Third Round draw ahead of a replay next week. The 18 year-old goalkeeper had already helped caused a First Round shock as Woking beat Bury 3-0 in a replay and, returning from injury here, was in good form once more.
Jared Thompson and Chippenham beat Whitehawk 2-1 in National League South action.
Netherlands
Mason Mount, Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga all completed ninety minutes in a dismal Vitesse performance as they lost 1-0 away to defending champions Feyenoord on Saturday night. A good start to the season has quickly given way to the same frustrations as last year and, now seven points behind Ajax in third, manager Henk Fraser is coming under increasing pressure to hold on to his job.
Charlie Colkett was an unused substitute.
Marco van Ginkel skippered PSV to a 1-0 win over Roda to remain eight points clear at the top, whilst Todd Kane was an unused substitute for Groningen at ADO Den Haag. Cristian Cuevas got ninety minutes as FC Twente shared a 3-3 draw with Ajax.
Belgium
Victorien Angban helped Waasland-Beveren into the last eight of the Belgian Cup in midweek; their 2-0 win over Eupen was then unfortunately followed by a 4-1 league defeat at Kortrijk, with the Ivorian midfielder featuring for every second along the way.
France
Nathan missed both of Amiens’ matches this week through injury.
Turkey
Kenneth Omeruo, rested for Kasimpasa’s Turkish Cup defeat in midweek, was involved from the start at Fenerbahce on Sunday but ended up on the losing side of a 4-2 scoreline.
Serbia
Danilo Pantic played 89 minutes of Partizan’s 1-0 win at Vozdovac in midweek and then ninety against Vojvodina on Sunday.
Russia
Josimar Quintero still hasn’t featured for Rostov.
