The Loan Report: January 2-7

The Loan Report remains Anglo-centric for the time being, with the rest of Europe and beyond enjoying winter breaks, but there remains plenty of action to catch up on. We begin with Ola Aina’s first senior goal.

Headliners

Aina, Fikayo Tomori and Michael Hector have been mainstays of Hull’s team since new manager Nigel Adkins arrived at the club a month ago, comprising 75% of the Tigers’ back four that has shown a marked improvement compared to Leonid Slutskiy’s rather porous rearguard. They each completed another ninety minutes on Saturday away to League One’s Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup Third Round, and it was Aina’s second-half header that secured a place in Monday’s Fourth Round draw.

England

Premier League

Injuries are mounting up after a frenetic festive schedule in which most teams played off the back off 24 hours’ rest, and both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham have been sidelined with knocks, but they’re not serious and shouldn’t keep them out for too long.

Kurt Zouma and Stoke suffered an ignominious FA Cup elimination away to fourth-tier Coventry City, after which manager Mark Hughes was sacked, whilst Izzy Brown and Brighton are in action against Crystal Palace on Monday evening. Kasey Palmer, meanwhile, was recalled from his loan at Huddersfield on Wednesday ahead of finding an alternative club for the second half of the campaign.

Championship

Fulham were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the FA Cup in a fixture which marked Lucas Piazon’s first start since August, and the Brazilian saw a big second-half chance to equalise go to waste. Tomas Kalas also started before being sacrificed for an extra attacker during the second half.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side had beaten Cardiff 4-2 earlier in the week with four goals in a remarkable seven-minute spell. Kalas was rested for that one, whilst Piazon’s arrival in the 65th minute signalled the start of Fulham’s comeback. He was somewhat harshly booked for diving but otherwise made a healthy contribution to a team that needs his game-changing ability more than ever in the second half of the season.

Jeremie Boga laid on a tremendous assist for Sam Gallagher in Birmingham’s 2-0 win at Reading on Tuesday and then played 80 minutes of their 1-0 triumph over Burton Albion in the cup four days later.

Jamal Blackman was restored to a much-changed Sheffield United team for their FA Cup trip to Ipswich Town and he rewarded them with a clean sheet and a 1-0 win. Granted, Ipswich didn’t muster a shot on target, but it was a promising return for the big custodian anyway.

Lewis Baker still can’t get a game for Middlesbrough, whilst Iké Ugbo was recalled from his loan at Barnsley on Tuesday after playing just 900 minutes in five months at Oakwell…

League One

…and was then immediately sent out to League One side MK Dons, who were in for him in the summer. He was thrown straight into the starting eleven for the FA Cup trip to Queens Park Rangers, where his energetic pressing and hard running earned him positive reviews in a 1-0 win.

Jordan Houghton and Doncaster Rovers were beaten 1-0 by Rochdale in the first match since the 22 year-old midfielder extended his stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the season. Initially expected to agree a permanent deal, Houghton has instead kept his options open by remaining a member of the loan army for the time being.

Jay Dasilva played all ninety minutes as Charlton beat Oldham in League One action, with both teams having been knocked out of the FA Cup.

League Two

Brad Collins claimed his fifth clean sheet of the season as Forest Green Rovers beat Port Vale 1-0 to move out of the League Two relegation zone.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter and Woking were involved in a 4-4 draw at home to Maidstone, whilst Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town saw their trip to Poole Town fall foul of the weather.

Transfer Rumours

Everyone else remains on a winter break, but with the transfer window now open, business is beginning to pick up. Jake Clarke-Salter will join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season, whilst Brazilian forward Nathan is the subject of interest from Atlético Mineiro after struggling to make an impact at Amiens since August. Josimar Quintero, linked with Romanian club CSM Poli, has also been connected with a potential switch to Valencia.
