The Loan Report: May 14-20

Mason Mount took Vitesse to the brink of Europa League qualification. Matt Miazga helped them over the line. We begin the final Loan Report of the season with a look at how the Arnhem club secured UEFA competition football for 2017-18.

Headliners

For much of the season it looked as if Vitesse’s Europa League experience this term was to be a one-off; sinking lower and lower in the league under Henk Fraser, they weren’t even in position to take a place in the Eredivisie’s playoff competition for the final qualifying berth.

His departure in April saw Edward Sturing take charge until the end of the season, and suddenly everything clicked again. Vitesse started winning consistently, racked up the goals, and Mount came to the fore in a dominant stretch of form that concluded on Tuesday night, where he scored his first headed goal as a professional in a 3-2 first leg win over Utrecht in the Europa League Qualification Playoff Final.

Unfortunately for the 19 year-old, his second yellow card in three playoff matches earned him a one-match ban, bringing an end to his time at the club. Fourteen goals, eleven assists, and a huge influence later leaves a reputation as arguably the best Chelsea loanee ever to play at the Gelredome, but the job wasn’t quite done. On Saturday evening, the rest of his team-mates went to Utrecht to see the job through, and Miazga’s late first-half header secured a 5-3 aggregate win. Fankaty Dabo was an unused substitute in both matches.

Miazga’s goal was the 99th of the Loan Army season, after Danilo Pantic scored a beauty for Partizan in midweek against Spartak Subotica, and hopes of passing the century mark now rest with him in the Serbian Cup Final, as well as those players involved in the Football League Playoff Finals.

 

Mount, meanwhile, is now set to skip the England Under-19 training camp in La Manga in favour of an invitation to train with Gareth Southgate’s senior squad, who are preparing for the World Cup.

England

Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon are now just one match away from helping Fulham to return to the Premier League after they saw off Kasey Palmer’s Derby County 2-0 at Craven Cottage on Monday night. All three loanees began the match as substitutes, with Palmer introduced midway through the second half, and Kalas for the final quarter of an hour.

They’ll face John Terry’s Aston Vila, who narrowly eliminated Lewis Baker’s Middlesbrough 1-0 over two legs. Baker was not selected for either fixture, and will leave the Riverside Stadium this summer despite originally agreeing a two-year stay.

Belgium

Victorien Angban’s last match for Waasland-Beveren ended in predictably premature fashion as the Ivorian midfielder was sent off after 45 minutes of their defeat to Kortrijk. It was his third dismissal in Belgian football, in addition to 17 yellow cards, in 54 league matches.

Ireland

Mitchell Beeney and Sligo lost 2-0 to St Pat’s in midweek, and he then kept his first clean sheet for the club in their 0-0 draw at home to Shamrock Rovers on Saturday.
