The Loan Army is an imperfect venture but, when it works, it works well. Mason Mount’s England call-up this week encapsulated that and headlines this week’s Loan Report.
Headliners
Mount has been genuinely outstanding for Derby County this season, not just in scoring and creating goals, but in his all-round impact on a much-changed, generally younger Rams team seeking to build a promotion-winning campaign. His performance in last week’s League Cup win at Manchester United helped to show that he has what it takes to compete alongside Premier League talent and, subsequently, Gareth Southgate has included him in his squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League trips to Croatia and Spain.
It meant more attention than usual was paid to his performance at QPR on Saturday, one that was ultimately a little below-par, but he did play a big role in preserving a point with a late clearance off the line. Fikayo Tomori joined him in completing ninety minutes at Loftus Road, with both players having played from start to finish in midweek at home to Norwich City too.
Tammy Abraham has already had a taste of England duty, making his senior bow almost a year ago now, and the increased opportunities being handed to Championship players will doubtless increase his appetite to return to the headline stage. Goals against Preston and Millwall this week will have done his confidence the world of good, despite Villa’s poor form, that saw the departure of manager Steve Bruce this week.
The current favourites to replace Bruce? The managerial dream team of Thierry Henry and John Terry…
Trevoh Chalobah also weighed in with a goal on Saturday, marking back to back ninety-minute outings with a late winner for Ipswich at Swansea, the goal giving the Tractor Boys their first win of the season.
Later that same afternoon, Kenedy struck early at Old Trafford to give Newcastle the lead away to a beleaguered Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. Newcastle couldn’t hold on and eventually lost 3-2, but the goal will have been a welcome remedy to the Brazilian, who has struggled at the start of this new season.
England
Premier League
Kurt Zouma is growing in confidence as a regular at Everton now and helped them to a 2-1 win away to Leicester City on Saturday. Earlier in the week, he successfully scored during a penalty shootout in the League Cup against Southampton, but still ended up on the losing side.
Championship
Todd Kane played every second for Hull this week – first on the right wing against Leeds, and then at right wing-back at Sheffield United – but ended up on the losing side on both occasions. Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackburn were unused substitutes in the former of the two matches, while Baker did at least play fifteen minutes from the bench against Brentford on Saturday.
Reece James’ impressive season continued as he was awarded the Wigan Athletic Player of the Month Award for September in midweek, and then played well as the Latics drew 0-0 against Swansea City. They were beaten 4-0 at Preston on Saturday, but that had more to do with Darron Gibson’s red card than anything to do with Reece.

Kasey Palmer played 70 minutes in Blackburn’s 1-0 win at Bolton on Saturday, and Michael Hector was in his usual spot at the heart of defence as Sheffield Wednesday took four points from six available against West Brom and Bristol City. He was up against Jay Dasilva in the second of those, the left-back getting his first ninety minutes for the Robins, but Tomas Kalas is still out with a broken jaw.
League One
Dujon Sterling continued his spell at left-back for Coventry City with two ninety-minute outings, first in defeat against Portsmouth, then more successfully 2-1 away to Charlton Athletic. After a rough time of it in September, he’s beginning to regain the confidence of some Sky Blues supporters.

Charlie Colkett continues to be curiously absent for Shrewsbury, despite scoring for them in a behind closed doors fixture against Burton recently, but Iké Ugbo has been sidelined at Scunthorpe with a minor injury.
Brad Collins returned to the Burton squad after a thigh injury but was backup to Dimitar Evtimov in the 2-1 defeat at Wycombe.
League Two
Nathan Baxter and Yeovil Town lost 3-1 at Colchester in midweek before arresting a mini-slump with a good point at home to Exeter City on Saturday. The Colchester match was his 100th in senior football.
Earlier this week, @NathanBaxterGK reached 100 games in professional football. He doesn't turn 20 for another month.

Jacob Maddox played all of Cheltenham’s draw with Morecambe and defeat to Milton Keynes. Despite their struggles, he continues to stand out.

Spain
Michy Batshuayi played 73 minutes of Valencia’s goalless draw at Manchester United in the Champions League and ninety in a 1-1 draw at home to Barcelona on Sunday night.
Kenneth Omeruo made his Leganés debut as a first-half substitute in their 1-0 win at home to Rayo Vallecano, but Joao Rodriguez missed out for Tenerife, as did Josimar Quintero for Lleida.
Italy
Ola Aina played 65 minutes at left wing-back for Torino in a 3-2 win at home to Frosinone, and Mario Pašalić played just under an hour of Atalanta’s 1-0 defeat home to Sampdoria.
Tiemoue Bakayoko struggled for Milan in their Europa League win over AEK Athens, as Gazzetta dello Sport demonstrated, and he was duly left as an unused substitute in the 3-1 victory against Chievo on Sunday.

Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter provided the foundation for a clean sheet as Vitesse beat Heracles 4-0 on Sunday. Charly Musonda remains absent with injury.
Fankaty Dabo played all of Sparta Rotterdam’s draw at Go Ahead Eagles and Kyle Scott saw 84 minutes as Telsar were beaten 3-0 by Jong Ajax.
Germany
Baba Rahman can’t get into the Schalke squad these days, and hasn’t played at all for more than a month now.
France
Matt Miazga was booked for the fifth match running as Nantes lost 3-0 at Bordeaux. His fourth caution came in midweek, again in a losing cause, this time at home to Nice.
Victorien Angban and Metz head to Sochaux on Monday night.

Kylian Hazard was an unused substitute in Cercle Brugge’s 2-1 win at home to Charleroi.

Ruben Sammut came on midway through the second half of Falkirk’s defeat to Dunfermline.
