The Loan Report: October 22-28

Another week, another goal for the Loan Army. It wasn’t the most spectacular seven days, but the 40-strong group continues to churn along rather nicely overall.

Headliners

Michy Batshuayi provided the goal as Valencia drew 1-1 at Young Boys in the Champions League; his smart touch to create the chance was followed by the composure to round the goalkeeper and tuck away his second goal of the season.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of starts to his stay in Spain, however, and there was a timely reminder of that when he was replaced at half time of Saturday’s goalless draw away to Athletic Bilbao.

England

Premier League

Kurt Zouma played well as Everton lost 2-1 at Manchester United.

Kenedy played all of Newcastle’s instantly-forgettable goalless draw at Southampton, a clash of two teams looking very likely to be involved in a relegation scrap this season.

Championship

There was a double-header of Championship action this week and it was Derby County that, again, took a major share of the headlines. Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori started and starred in a 4-1 demolition of West Brom on Wednesday, and were in good nick in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough three days later.

Mount was taken off after an hour, as a precautionary measure after suffering a blow to the foot, but manager Frank Lampard isn’t expecting him to miss the forthcoming League Cup tie against his parent club. Tomori, meanwhile, was named Man of the Match and is playing extremely well right now.

Tammy Abraham hit the post in his 54 minutes on the pitch during Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Norwich, and he was then on the losing side once more at QPR on Friday, getting all ninety minutes in a 1-0 reverse.

Tomas Kalas returned to action after missing a month with a broken jaw and was named Man of the Match in a 1-0 win against Hull City. Jay Dasilva also played ninety minutes going up against Todd Kane on that side of the pitch, impressing again, but was limited to just the second half in Saturday’s defeat to Stoke. Kalas played the full match again, while Kane was afforded a rest for Hull’s win at Bolton.

Reece James played the majority of a pair of Wigan defeats, but most notably played all of Saturday’s loss at Sheffield United on the right side of a back three, a position he grew accustomed to at Chelsea but hadn’t really played in his time at the Latics before.

Michael Hector played every minute of Sheffield Wednesday’s defeats to QPR and Birmingham, while Trevoh Chalobah’s five-minute cameo at the end of Ipswich’s defeat to Leeds was his last under manager Paul Hurst. New manager Paul Lambert thrust him back into the starting eleven at Millwall on Saturday – at the heart of a three-man defence for the first time – and though he was good, the Tractor Boys still lost 1-0.

Kasey Palmer bounced back from being an unused substitute for Blackburn at Swansea to putting in what was described as ‘his best performance in a Rovers shirt’ four days later, helping his team to a 1-1 draw at West Brom.

Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman were unused subs for Leeds in both matches.

League One

Dujon Sterling and Coventry City beat Bradford and Doncaster to make it five wins in a row and, with the good feelings surrounding the club, the young right back – who turned 19 this week – has received plenty of praise for his resurgence to good form after a shaky spell a few weeks ago.

Iké Ugbo played a little more than ninety minutes combined over two Scunthorpe United defeats to Blackpool and Plymouth respectively, but there’s still no sign of Charlie Colkett at Shrewsbury.

Brad Collins did return to the Burton goal after injury (and losing his spot to Dimitar Evtimov) but couldn’t help them avoid a 2-1 defeat to Peterborough.

League Two

Nathan Baxter recorded a 24th-career clean sheet (and a league-leading seventh this season) in Yeovil’s 1-0 win at Carlisle, four days after a 1-1 draw at home to Crewe. He made a string of tremendous saves at Carlisle, as the highlights attest to.

Jacob Maddox played all bar eight minutes as Cheltenham lost to Oldham and Stevenage to stay firmly in the relegation zone.

Italy

Ola Aina was in great form for Torino against Fiorentina, playing ninety minutes, and essentially scoring their goal as it was his shot that bounced back off the woodwork and in via the back of goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

Mario Pašalić played the last six minutes of Atalanta’s 3-0 win at Parma but it wasn’t such a good week for Tiemoue Bakayoko. He was once again voted the worst player on the pitch in Milan’s Europa League defeat to Betis by Gazzetta dello Sport, was substituted at half time, and subsequently went back to being unused on the bench in Serie A action on Sunday.

Netherlands

Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter played from start to finish as Vitesse got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win against Fortuna Sittard. It was hardly a classic, but Vitesse are at least fifth in the Eredivisie standings.

Sparta Rotterdam took on Telstar in the second division but neither Fankaty Dabo (Sparta) nor Kyle Scott (Telstar) were fit enough to take part.

Spain

Kenneth Omeruo played all of Leganés’ defeat to Levante but it was his first ninety minutes for his new club.

Joao Rodriguez started and played 72 minutes in Tenerife’s come-from-behind win at home to Alcorcón, but Josimar Quintero was once again absent for Lleida.

Germany

There was no Baba Rahman for Schalke, again.

France

Matt Miazga was left out as Nantes won 2-1 at Amiens, and Victorien Angban was an unused substitute in Metz’s 0-0 draw at Lorient.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard was handed his first start by Cercle Brugge and got 72 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Kortrijk.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut played an hour of Falkirk’s 2-0 defeat to Queen of the South.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic played 77 minutes of Partizan’s 2-0 win at Zemun in the Serbian Cup in midweek, picking up a back injury that ruled him out of their weekend draw against Napredak in the league, and is likely to keep him out for another fortnight.
