The Loan Report: May 6-12

Despite half of the loan army already being on their summer holidays, there’s still plenty to report on from the guys still out there this season, and a lot of it came from players who might have hopes of impacting the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge next season.

Headliners

The first goal went to Tammy Abraham on Saturday afternoon in Aston Villa’s big promotion playoff Semi Final first leg at home to West Brom. On his return from a shoulder injury, he had a quiet outing overall, but showed the courage and confidence to step up and take a second half penalty to give his team a 2-1 lead going into the second leg. It was his 26th goal of the season.

Later that same afternoon, Christian Pulisic continued his recent good form with another goal for Dortmund, the opener in a 3-2 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf that took the Bundesliga title race down to the last game of the season next week.

Dortmund go to Gladbach next Saturday needing a win and needing Bayern Munich to lose at home to Eintracht Frankfurt if Pulisic is to depart as a champion. In his final match at the Westfalenstadion, he was given an appropriate send-off.

On Sunday, Michy Batshuayi profited from Crystal Palace hosting Bournemouth in a typical end-of-season affair by bagging two more goals for the Eagles, taking him to six in twelve matches in South London. An interesting summer awaits.

England

Premier League

Kurt Zouma’s time at Everton drew to a close with a 2-2 draw at Tottenham, a match that saw the Toffees reach an unwanted set-piece milestone.

Kenedy played the last nine minutes of Newcastle’s 4-0 win away to already-relegated Fulham.

Championship

The other playoff Semi Final saw Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount take on Leeds at Pride Park; it was a cagey performance from the Rams, against a very good Leeds team, and a single-goal win for the visitors leaves the tie poised ahead of Wednesday’s decisive return match. Tomori defended stoutly while Mount had a quiet day overall.

Non-League

Ethan Wady’s last match for Tooting & Mitcham United ended in defeat as they lost the Surrey Senior Cup Final to the Met Police. Still, it was the end of a terrific experience for a youngster with barely any academy playing time to his name this term, and it’ll serve him well moving forward.

Italy

As the race for Champions League qualification reaches top speed in the closing weeks, Chelsea loanees are front and centre in the fight for fourth. Mario Pašalić played the first half as Atalanta beat Genoa on Saturday, a result that lifted them into third place until Inter play Lucas Piazon’s Chievo on Monday night. Nonetheless, if Atalanta win their last two matches, they’ll qualify, despite Tiémoué Bakayoko and Milan picking up three points of their own with a 1-0 win at Fiorentina; the French midfielder getting the full ninety minutes despite recent disagreements with manager Gennaro Gattuso.

Torino are still in the hunt, waiting for teams ahead of them to split up, but Ola Aina missed a win over Sassuolo and a potential reunion with the in-form former blue Jeremie Boga after being struck down with illness.

Spain

Alvaro Morata was booked in his 78 minutes for Atlético Madrid in a 1-1 draw with Sevilla, while Kenneth Omeruo got ninety more minutes at the back for Leganés, who lost 2-0 at home to Espanyol.

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for Lleida.

Netherlands

Vitesse’s 6-1 win over De Graafschap secured their place in the Eredivisie’s Europa League Playoffs and it also saw Charly Musonda play his first minutes of the season. Having been sidelined through injury since playing in a behind closed doors friendly shortly after signing in September, he was finally able to step foot back on the pitch at the Gelredome, getting the last fifteen minutes in one of their best performances of the season.

Jake Clarke-Salter was at the heart of the defence as always, while Eduardo was on the bench.

Fankaty Dabo’s latest injury might well rule him out of Sparta Rotterdam’s promotion playoff match away to TOP Oss on Monday.

France

Baba Rahman missed Reims’ defeat at Caen through suspension due to accumulation of yellow cards.

Victorien Angban played half an hour for Ligue 2 champions Metz in defeat at Nancy in their penultimate match of the season.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard signed permanently with Cercle Brugge last week but, for the time being, he remains a member of the loan army, and so we count his return from injury this week to play 20 minutes in defeat at Waasland-Beveren.

Turkey

Victor Moses was pressed into more playing time than scheduled for Fenerbahce against Akhisar Belediyespor after Mehmet Topal suffered an 11th-minute injury; the Nigerian international helped them to a 2-1 win that confirms their place in the Super Lig next season.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic came on at half time during Partizan’s 2-1 win at Vojvodina.

Brazil

Nathan played 70 minutes as Atlético-MG exited the Copa Libertadores with a 2-1 win over bottom-placed Zamora, then got 35 minutes in their Serie A defeat to Palmeiras Sunday afternoon.
