Breaking news on this transfer deadline day evening is that Patrick van Aanholt will spend the 2011-12 season on loan at Premier League club Wigan Athletic.
The player himself revealed the news on Twitter and is set to join up with Roberto Martinez’s team this week.
Van Aanholt, who turned 21 on Monday, has had three spells in The Championship but his only taste of top-flight football to date has been with Chelsea, making cameo appearances during the past two seasons.
He now heads to the DW Stadium for what should be a productive season on loan. He will be competing with Maynor Figueroa for playing time but is arguably as good as the Honduran international and should see his fair share of action.
The Latics were believed to have had an approach for Josh McEachran turned down earlier on deadline day but have been more successful with the Dutch Under-21 international.
The Blues are expected to loan a handful of other younger players out before the window closes at 11pm, with the likes of Matej Delac, Rhys Taylor, Jacob Mellis, Gael Kakuta and Ryan Bertrand all linked with deals elsewhere.
