Spring and Roundabouts

Spring brings a feeling of renewal; a fresh start.  Supermarkets are advertising product discounts for a “spring clean”.  The crocuses and daffodils are out – Hyde Park was looking stunning, albeit somewhat overcast today.  For those of us of the Christian faith, the great season of Lent is upon us.  And at the risk of being accused of attempting to steal the thunder of my dear friend, Driver on The…

Under-18s: Chelsea 0-2 Leicester City

Chelsea’s Under-18s went down to a first home defeat of the season on Saturday as Leicester City claimed an impressive 2-0 win at Cobham. Second half strikes from Danny Rowe and substitute Chris Dusabe were enough for the Foxes to take all three points back home with them, and they did so deservedly after putting in a committed and disciplined display. Adi Viveash’s team selection was the usual mixture of…

The Loan Report: February 17-23

In this week’s Loan Report, Patrick Bamford and Christian Atsu continued the Chelsea loanee goalscoring streak into a 27th consecutive week of the 2013-14 season, but it was a mixed bag elsewhere as a number of familiar names and faces encountered a change of circumstance. Headliners Having scored in four consecutive Derby County matches, it came as something of a disappointment when Bamford failed to score against Queens Park Rangers…

FA Youth Cup: Cardiff City 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea’s Under-18s booked a spot in a fifth consecutive FA Youth Cup Quarter Final with a 2-0 win away to Cardiff City on Tuesday evening. The youngsters were made to work hard for their victory as they took on a very defensively-minded Cardiff side but an early goal from Dominic Solanke set them on their way, and following more than an hour of probing, Alex Kiwomya’s 77th minute goal secured…

The Loan Report: February 10-16

For the second successive week, Croatian midfielder Mario Pašalić netted to extend the unbeaten run of Chelsea loanee goalscoring in the 2013-14 season to a 26th consecutive week, and in doing so made it 90 goals scored by the (current running total of) 30 Blues youngsters away on loan. It was a rare bright moment in a week which was otherwise rather disappointing on a number of levels, so we…

Chelsea’s youngest Under-18 team of the season staged a late comeback on Saturday morning to earn a point in a 2-2 draw against London rivals Arsenal at Cobham. No fewer than nine schoolboys featured for a Blues team which had found itself trailing 2-0 midway through the second half after goals from Renny Smith and Stephy Mavididi, but they finished strong. Jake Clarke-Salter’s first youth team goal reduced the arrears…

The Loan Report: February 3-9

In the latest Loan Report, a pair of young Croatian loanees were responsible for extending the unbroken streak of Chelsea players scoring this season up to a 25th consecutive week. Mario Pašalić and Stipe Perica may not be household names (yet), but they both had good weekends when many of the more recognisable faces didn’t. Headliners Pašalić’s signing hasn’t officially been announced by Chelsea yet, but with all other parties…

Under-21s: Fulham 1-2 Chelsea

Chelsea’s Under-21s bounced back from a defeat in their last outing to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Fulham as they triumphed 2-1 at Motspur Park on Friday night. An excellent first-half performance saw goals from John Swift and Lewis Baker put Chelsea in the ascendancy but despite their first half excellence, they found it much tougher after the break. Cauley Woodrow’s penalty reduced the arrears and…
