The Loan Report: August 14-20

A quieter week on the loan front was arguably headlined by the graduation of Andreas Christensen from star loanee over the last two years into stud Chelsea centre-half, following the Dane’s starring role in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but as we focus on this year’s vintage, we instead focus on Marco van Ginkel, who continues to bang in the goals at PSV Eindhoven.

Headliners

The midfielder, who has taken over as captain at the Philips Stadion this season, suffered initial disappointment upon returning for his third spell there as PSV were knocked out of the Europa League, but has attempted to make amends for that by showing that he is far, far too good for the Eredivisie.

An opening-weekend goal against AZ Alkmaar was followed by another away to NAC Breda on Sunday and it wouldn’t be the greatest exaggeration to say he could find himself competing for the league’s goalscoring crown this term; Nicolai Jorgensen of Feyenoord won it last season with 21 goals but Van Ginkel’s scoring rate across a pair of half-season stays would have had him in contention in those campaigns too.

Moving on to one of the more disappointing developments over the past seven days, and of the season so far, as Lucas Piazon faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a fracture-dislocation of the right ankle following Fulham’s midweek trip to Leeds. The Brazilian, who had a broken jaw inflicted upon him earlier in 2017, once again learned how uncompromising life in the Championship can be as Conor Shaughnessy’s tackle left him nursing an injury that will see him lucky to return before Christmas.

Premier League

The learning experiences come thick and fast for youngsters earning Premier League opportunities and, for Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, facing Manchester United and Liverpool respectively will have taught them plenty about where they currently stand in their development.

Abraham worked hard as an isolated lone forward in a Swansea team that never wrestled control of their eventual 4-0 defeat against United but had some bright moments, whilst Loftus-Cheek stole the show for Crystal Palace for the second week running, yet once again ended up on the losing side. Instead of claiming an assist for what should have been a Christian Benteke goal, the Belgian failed to provide the finish, and Liverpool took all of the spoils courtesy of Sadio Mane’s late winner.

Kurt Zouma is much further along in his own development yet will look to make up for lost time at Stoke City this term as he continues to recover from a torn cruciate ligament, and his display at home to Arsenal on Saturday will have given everyone a timely reminder of the mammoth potential he possesses. The Frenchman was imperious in leading the Potters to a 1-0 win over a typically frail Arsenal side.

Kasey Palmer made a late substitute appearance as Huddersfield beat Newcastle United 1-0 to make it two wins from two games, whilst Izzy Brown is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered playing for Brighton on the opening weekend. Seagulls manager Chris Hughton revealed this week that he hopes to have the England Under-21 forward back in the coming days.

Championship

It was a frustrating week all round for the Blues scattered around England’s second tier, with a Tomas Kalas served a one-match suspension for Fulham’s trip to Leeds that saw Piazon injured, but returned for a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Lewis Baker made a pair of substitute appearances for Middlesbrough, first helping them to beat Burton Albion 2-0, but then winding up on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Jamal Blackman and Sheffield United lost 2-0 to in-form Cardiff City in midweek but bounced back well to beat Iké Ugbo’s Barnsley four days later; Ugbo and company had themselves beaten Forest 2-1 in the first of their double-header of matches this week.

Ola Aina and Michael Hector, on the other hand, found themselves on the losing side twice at Hull, although Aina did enough to earn some plaudits and a place in WhoScored’s team of the week. The Tigers are struggling for numbers right now and are expected to turn towards Chelsea again for reinforcements; they can take a further two players on loan from the Blues and both Jeremie Boga and Fikayo Tomori have been linked with a switch to the KCOMM Stadium.

League One

Jay Dasilva and Charlton walloped Northampton Town 4-1 at the Valley on Saturday and the diminutive defender once again earned generally positive reviews from the delighted Addicks faithful.

League Two

Brad Collins was on the winning side as Forest Green Rovers recorded their maiden Football League win in a humdinger of a 4-3 triumph against Yeovil on Saturday.

Non-League

Nathan Baxter helped Woking to return to winning ways in a 2-1 defeat of Eastleigh in midweek but their up-and-down form came back with a vengeance at the weekend; Leyton Orient came to town and took a 2-0 win home with them.

Jared Thompson played in both of Chippenham Town’s matches; a late 1-0 defeat to Poole, and a 2-2 draw at home to East Thurrock United.

Netherlands

Vitesse won 3-1 at Roda on Friday to go top of the league following a 100% start to the season. Fankaty Dabo has completed 90 minutes in both victories so far whilst Charlie Colkett and Matt Miazga have been late substitutes on each occasion, leaving Mason Mount still awaiting his debut at the Gelredome.

Todd Kane played just under half an hour for Groningen in a 3-1 defeat at Ajax but is widely-expected to earn a place in the starting eleven when he returns to full fitness, as he told Nizaar Kinsella in an enlightening interview earlier this week.

Belgium

Victorien Angban came on for the final half an hour of Waasland-Beveren’s 3-2 reverse at home to Lokeren.

Russia

Mario Pašalić and Spartak Moscow faced a second Moscow derby in as many weeks as Lokomotiv came to the Otkrytie Arena, but they left empty-handed once again as the visitors claimed a 4-3 win. Pašalić can at least console himself with the fact that he was this week called up by Croatia for the first time in more than two years.

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute again for FC Rostov.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic was an unused substitute as Partizan drew 0-0 with Videoton in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday. Their subsequent league fixture against Napredak on Sunday was postponed.
