The Loan Report: October 16-22

Marco van Ginkel reclaimed the lead in the Loan Army’s goalscoring ranks this season with a brace as PSV beat Heracles to lead off our latest round-up.

Headliners

The 24 year-old midfielder has been a steady source of goals during his three different stays in Eindhoven, and contributed again with a brace in a 3-0 win over Heracles on Sunday, taking his overall tally for the season to six, one more than Tammy Abraham.

Over in Mexico, Joao Rodriguez scored for the second weekend running as Tampico Madero beat Atlante 4-1.

England

Premier League

Abraham himself cut a frustrated figure as a below-par Swansea lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City, whilst Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s first action in a month amounted to just thirteen minutes for Crystal Palace in a defeat away to Newcastle. Despite his miserly playing time, he still managed to create his team’s best chance, but – like many other examples already this term – a team-mate (Patrick van Aanholt this time) was unable to take advantage.

Kurt Zouma and Stoke lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth, Izzy Brown got fifteen minutes at the end of Brighton’s 3-0 win at West Ham, and Kasey Palmer remains on course to make a mid-November return from injury.

Championship

Jamal Blackman continued in goal for Sheffield United as the Blades beat Reading 2-1 to remain two points off the top of the table.

Hull recorded their first away win for more than a year by winning 1-0 at Barnsley on Saturday; they did so with Ola Aina and Michael Hector keeping Iké Ugbo quiet, with Ugbo departing the contest on 67 minutes. Fikayo Tomori was an unused substitute.

Tomas Kalas and Fulham were beaten 2-1 at Aston Villa as John Terry scored his first Villa goal, but Lewis Baker didn’t make Middlesbrough’s matchday squad for what was another disappointing result, a 1-0 defeat at home to Cardiff. Jeremie Boga only got 13 minutes as Birmingham lost 2-0 at Millwall to extend the frustration further.

League One

Jay Dasilva helped Charlton to a 1-1 draw at Oxford on Tuesday before taking a back seat away to Bradford on Saturday, playing the final four minutes of a 1-0 win.

Jordan Houghton completed 180 of 180 minutes at Doncaster this week, experiencing the elation of a 2-1 win over Portsmouth and the disappointment of a 3-0 reverse at the hands of Walsall four days later.

League Two

Brad Collins was restored to the Forest Green Rovers goal this week, and they were rewarded with back-to-back wins for the first time as a Football League club. The Chelsea stopper helped them to a clean sheet and 1-0 win away to Coventry on Tuesday and then followed it up with another good display in a 2-1 win at Stevenage.

Charlie Wakefield agreed a loan deal with Stevenage on transfer deadline day in August but, with injuries having dogged him throughout 2017, he is yet to make an appearance for the club. This week he flew to Barcelona to undergo stem-cell treatment in an effort to get over persistent hamstring problems.

For just over a year now, I’ve had on going hamstring tendon problems. The situation I’ve been in has been very, very unique. I have strained my hamstring 7 times in the space of a year. It’s been a very tough journey with set back, after set back and having to deal with constant frustration of not being able to play games, without there being a problem. There’s been long, hard days in the Physio room, when all I’ve wanted was to be back training with the team. I would do a full rehab programme with the @chelseafc Physios after each injury, having the best treatment and opportunity to get me back fit and playing again. I’ve always stayed positive and patient throughout this whole process, which has enabled me to work hard everyday, without letting the situation get to me when it’s been very tough on a lot of occasions. After every re injury occurrence it became more and more of a concern. I’d do all the rehab work that was needed for me to be able to train and play again, but then as soon as I went into either one of them, I would have another re injury. After the 7th time, it was very clear that something major had to be done to resolve the problem, even though we’d practically tried everything, including all different test and high quality hamstring exercises. Surgery looked like the only option for me, meaning another massive set back of being out for a long time. Until Stem Cell treatment was suggested instead of surgery. It is a very new procedure, with a quicker recovery and known to have great results, which I decided to opt for instead of surgery. This photo is after I had my treatment today in Barcelona. This is another step closer to my long awaited comeback. 🙏 #CFC

Non-League

Nathan Baxter and Woking beat Concord Rangers in a midweek FA Cup replay to take their place in the First Round Proper, but then suffered a rare league defeat on Saturday as they went down 2-0 to Bromley.

Jared Thompson, who signed a new contract with Chelsea last week, was in good form for Chippenham Town again as they won 3-1 away to Bognor Regis Town.

Buzzing to have extended my contract at @chelseafc 👊🏼🔵📝⚽️

Netherlands

Vitesse picked up their first Europa League point in midweek as they drew 1-1 away to Zulte Waregem in a contest where all four Chelsea loanees played. Fankaty Dabo, Matt Miazga and Mason Mount each completed ninety minutes, with Mount looking lively throughout in just his second start for the club, whilst Charlie Colkett got off the bench for the last quarter of an hour.

Just Dabo and Miazga retained their places for Sunday’s league visit to Heerenveen as Vitesse recorded a hugely-impressive 4-0 win to hold onto third in the Eredivisie. Mount came off the bench with an hour played, whilst Dabo limped off late on after claiming an assist in a fine individual outing.

Todd Kane was back in the Groningen matchday squad after injury only to remain an unused substitute against Willem II, whilst Cristian Cuevas got ninety minutes for FC Twente in a 3-0 win over Roda.

Belgium

Victorien Angban played 71 minutes for Waasland-Beveren against Zulte Waregem.

France

Nathan was an unused substitute as Amiens beat Bordeaux 1-0.

Russia

Mario Pašalić played half an hour from the bench as Spartak Moscow crushed Sevilla 5-1 in midweek Champions League action and was then an unused sub in a disappointing goalless draw in the league at home to Amkar.

Josimar Quintero was an unused substitute for Rostov against Tosno.

Serbia

Danilo Pantic was an unused substitute in Partizan’s goalless draw in the Europa League at Skenderbeu, but he did get an hour on Sunday in the 3-1 league win versus Backa Backa Palanka.

Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo played ninety minutes as Kasimpasa were beaten 2-1 at Antalyaspor on Friday night.
