We’re back from the international break with a Loan Report that now features 34 players after the summer transfer window closed last week. With plenty to cover, let’s get stuck in.
Headliners
Danilo Pantic made the decision to return to Partizan Belgrade this season for a loan spell, two years after departing for Chelsea, and so far it’s working out superbly for him. He’s already closing on playing as many minutes as he accumulated in the entirety of 2016-17 and scored his second goal of the campaign on Saturday in a 3-0 win at home to Mladost Lucani.
Partizan reportedly have a very affordable option to buy during the deal and, based on his first two months back at the club, they would be silly not to exercise it.
England
Premier League
Tammy Abraham played his first 90 minutes in a Swansea shirt against Newcastle, and generally did well, but will come away knowing it was he that passed up his team’s best chance of a goal midway through the second half. Breaking the Newcastle offside trap, he rounded Rob Elliott and looked all set to score his first home goal, only for Jamaal Lascelles to clear off the line and then go on to claim the match-winning goal himself.
Kurt Zouma was part of a committed Stoke City effort as they held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw on Saturday; the Frenchman certainly played his part in helping to end Jose Mourinho’s 100% start to the new season.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek missed Crystal Palace’s defeat to Burnley with the lingering effects of a recent injury, whilst Kasey Palmer and Huddersfield go to West Ham on Monday night. Izzy Brown will hopefully return to Brighton this week and resume full training after suffering a hamstring injury on the opening day of the campaign.
Championship
Lewis Baker played 68 minutes for Middlesbrough as they brushed Bolton aside 3-0 at the Macron Stadium to get their promotion charge up and running properly. Baker played in an attacking midfield role and looks set to be an important part of a squad blessed with talent in every department looking to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Tomas Kalas played the full 90 minutes as Fulham drew 1-1 with Cardiff in a battle of two other promotion contenders, whilst Lucas Piazon convalesces from a broken leg, but it wasn’t such good news for Ola Aina and Michael Hector at Hull as they were battered 5-0 away to Derby on Friday night.
Both defenders found out the hard way that mistakes at this level will be punished but it was a woeful performance in every department from the Tigers, for whom Fikayo Tomori was an unused substitute after a last-minute deadline day loan switch.
Jeremie Boga was one of six new signings to debut for Birmingham City away to Norwich City at the weekend; the Ivorian played the full 90 minutes in a wide attacking role and looked good in spells despite the 1-0 defeat. Iké Ugbo, meanwhile, played 90 minutes to help Barnsley to a 1-1 draw away at Preston.
Jamal Blackman was on the winning side as Sheffield United beat Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light but the big stopper will be disappointed to have lost his clean sheet deep into stoppage time.
League One
Jay Dasilva’s star continues to rise after another strong showing for Charlton in a 2-1 win over Southend that moved the Addicks up to second in the table, whilst Jordan Houghton played half an hour for Doncaster away to Northampton in his second loan spell at the Keepmoat Stadium.
League Two
Brad Collins returned to the Forest Green Rovers goal after sitting out last weekend’s defeat at Wycombe but the leaky defence in front of him was once again found wanting in a 3-1 defeat at home to Exeter City.
Charlie Wakefield joined Stevenage on a season-long deal on deadline day, but will not link up with them until the end of the month, owing to a long-standing hamstring problem which is still being treated back at Chelsea.
Non-League
Nathan Baxter and Woking lost 3-1 away to Maidstone whilst Jared Thompson and Chippenham Town had a week of mixed fortunes; beating Gloucester City 2-0 (and so keeping a clean sheet in the process) before going down 3-0 away to Dartford.
Netherlands
Vitesse make their debut in the Europa League group stages later this coming week against Lazio and warmed up for it in style with a strong 3-0 win away to Excelsior. Fankaty Dabo and Matt Miazga completed 90 minutes apiece whilst Mason Mount and Charlie Colkett were substitutes, but former academy player Mukhtar Ali did get his first minutes of the season after joining on a permanent three-year contract in the summer.
Marco van Ginkel and PSV lost 2-0 at Heerenveen after conceding two goals in the opening six minutes, whilst Todd Kane started for Groningen and was heavily involved up and down the right side in a 1-1 draw against VVV Venlo.
Cristian Cuevas joined FC Twente for the season in a curious deal reported as a permanent transfer by Chelsea, but as a loan by the Dutch club, although the latter claimed the loan was from Chilean outfit Huachipato rather than from the Blues. He didn’t play against Sparta Rotterdam this weekend, but watch this space for more information on this particular deal.
Belgium
Victorien Angban’s first start, and first ninety minutes, for Waasland-Beveren coincided with their best performance of the season as they beat Eupen 5-1 on Saturday. The Ivorian proved himself capable of being an effective player in La Liga last season and, as such, he could prove to be quite the asset in the Belgian Pro League once 100% fit again.
France
Brazilian forward Nathan, who spent the last two years on loan at Vitesse, will play for newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Amiens this season. He didn’t feature away to Strasbourg on Satuday, but a goal from former Chelsea player and Loan Report veteran Gael Kakuta secured a 1-0 win.
Russia
Mario Pašalić played the last fifteen minutes of Spartak Moscow’s 1-0 win over Rubin Kazan whilst there was no Josimar Quintero at all for FC Rostov as the Ecuadorian continues to wait for his first minutes of the new season.
Turkey
Kenneth Omeruo’s second stay at Kasimpasa – he spent the 2015-16 season at the Turkish club – gets underway on Monday night with a home fixture against Yeni Malatyaspor.
Mexico
Joao Rodriguez’ nomadic Chelsea career has so far taken in spells with Quindio, Uniautónoma, Bastia, Vitória Setúbal, and Sint-Truiden, but became even more eclectic this week when news broke of a move to Mexican second tier outfit Tampico Madero until the end of 2017. He wasn’t involved in their 4-0 win over Dorados de Sinaloa this weekend but will hope to add something to their their promotion challenge.
