The Loan Report: December 24-29

The winter break across Europe has accounted for a big chunk of Chelsea’s loanees enjoying a festive holiday, but there has been plenty to talk about from those who have played, as we hit the fifty-goal mark for the season too.

Headliners

There was enough incident at Carrow Road, where Norwich met Derby, for an entire article in its own right. Norwich went into the day second in the Championship, Derby sixth, and the ensuing ninety minutes saw seven goals, a floodlight failure, a last-minute winner, and goals for both Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount.

Mount broke a fifteen-match run without finding the back of the net, and Tomori scored his first league goal, and after a late delay due to faulty floodlights there were jubilant scenes for a delighted Frank Lampard.

It came three days after a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United, but as they enter 2019, things are very much on the up for the Rams.

It was also a productive Christmas for Tammy Abraham, who scored his tenth goal in as many matches in Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Preston. His 14 league goals in total are enough to make him the joint-second leading scorer in the league, and at a goal every 115 minutes he’s scoring at a rate of just better than one in two.

England

Premier League

A regular in what has become a three-man central defence at Everton now, Kurt Zouma had a busy week, playing all of the 5-1 win at Burnley before ending up on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat at Brighton.

Kenedy played 73 minutes as Newcastle were eased aside 4-0 at Liverpool before being left out by Rafa Benitez for the trip to Watford amid concerns about his work ethic.

Championship

Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva each played a part in both of Bristol City’s outings this week; Kalas saw every minute, while Dasilva was a late substitute against Brentford and got 77 minutes from the start in a 1-0 win over Rotherham on Saturday.

Michael Hector continues to impress for managerless Sheffield Wednesday, leading a strong rearguard effort that saw the Owls take four points from two of the toughest trips in the division, away to Middlesbrough and West Brom just three days apart.

Todd Kane, full of energy as ever, played every second of Hull’s festive fixture slate, as the Tigers claimed maximum points against Preston and Leeds, the latter unable to find even a minute for Lewis Baker while still being without the injured Izzy Brown.

Kasey Palmer started and played 69 minutes in Blackburn’s 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United, while Reece James got 90 and 60 minutes respectively away to West Brom and Swansea, being substituted in the latter having already been booked going up against the tricky Jefferson Montero.

Trevoh Chalobah played in midfield as usual as Ipswich lost to Middlesbrough and QPR.

League One

Brad Collins backstopped Burton Albion to a 3-1 win against Wycombe and a 1-1 draw with Plymouth to keep the Brewers moving away from relegation bother.

Dujon Sterling was man of the match as Coventry beat Charlton (2-1) and Southend (1-0) and, having overcome a spate of injuries, appears to have really found his game again.

Iké Ugbo on the other hand, continues to find the going tough at Scunthorpe, and played no minutes this week. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him head elsewhere in January, and the same goes for Charlie Colkett, who didn’t feature for Shrewsbury this week either.

League Two

Jacob Maddox made his return from injury with half an hour from the bench in Cheltenham’s ‘El Glossico’ draw against Forest Green Rovers.

Nathan Baxter also returned from a hip injury at Yeovil but served as backup to Stuart Nelson in both matches this week.

Italy

Ola Aina played ninety minutes as Torino beat Empoli and was then on the bench for the 1-1 draw at Lazio.

Tiémoué Bakayoko was man of the match as Milan beat Spal 2-1 having also featured away to Frosinone on Boxing Day.

Mario Pašalić played 66 minutes as Atalanta held Juventus to a 2-2 draw before claiming an assist in a full outing at Sassuolo, where he was part of a 6-2 win.

Belgium

Kylian Hazard played no part for Cercle Brugge against Eupen on Boxing Day.

Scotland

Ruben Sammut played 54 minutes as bottom-of-the-table Falkirk lost to Dunfermline.
