The Loan Report: August 12-18

For the second week in a row, Conor Gallagher takes centre stage in the Loan Report, as he produced another decisive performance for a Charlton Athletic side already looking comfortable in the Championship.

Headliners

After scoring his first professional goal last weekend at home to Stoke, the reigning Academy Player of the Year was back at it this time around away to Barnsley. He struck his second goal of the season to give the Addicks their first equaliser just before half time, and then won an 89th-minute penalty which Lyle Taylor converted to ensure they took a share of the spoils back to London with them.

It wasn’t quite the same Man of the Match performance at Oakwell, but it was more than good enough, and he looks accustomed to playing at this standard of football already.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater missed Burnley’s trip to Arsenal, as manager Sean Dyche noted his lack of match fitness, and he’ll be involved in their Under-23 match at home to Coventry on Monday in order to catch up.

Championship

Trevoh Chalobah’s Huddersfield debut came in a much-changed team that were humbled at home by Lincoln City in the League Cup. A league debut followed against Fulham on Friday night as a second half substitute, and as the Terriers suffered another reverse, manager Jan Siewert was dismissed from his post shortly after full time.

Jake Clarke-Salter was an unused substitute in Birmingham’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest and, while Dujon Sterling made his Wigan Athletic debut in their League Cup exit to Stoke City in midweek, there was no room for him in the squad that lost to Leeds in league action on Saturday.

Izzy Brown’s Luton debut saw him conjure up an assist in a terrific win at home to Ipswich Town; he lasted a little over an hour, something manager Graeme Jones urged him to do for longer-term benefit, but he’s still lacking match fitness after missing most of the last eighteen months through injury and played another 37 on Saturday at home to West Brom.

Matt Miazga and Reading saw off recently-relegated Cardiff 3-0 at the Madejski Stadium, his and their first clean sheet of the season.

League One

Luke McCormick completed his first ninety minutes in a Shrewsbury Town shirt in their midweek cup defeat to Rotherham, and saw 57 more on Saturday in a goalless draw against Rochdale.

Richard Nartey’s foot injury continues to keep him from making his Burton Albion debut, while Jacob Maddox is yet to feature for Tranmere in two matches since joining Rovers on deadline day.

League Two

Josh Grant made his Plymouth debut on Tuesday against Leyton Orient, impressing in a ninety-minute outing, but not enough to earn his first league minutes at Newport four days later.

Germany

Lewis Baker was in the starting eleven for Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Bundesliga opener, a 3-1 win at Werder Bremen, playing ninety minutes and catching the eye.

Ethan Ampadu was an unused substitute as RB Leipzig ran out 4-0 winners at newcomers Union Berlin.

Netherlands

Slowly but surely, Charly Musonda’s playing time is increasing, and he got just over half an hour in a 3-0 win against PEC Zwolle on Friday night that kept Leonid Slutskiy’s team joint-top of the very nascent Eredivisie table. He had enough time to offer one or two reminders of the sort of quality he has about him.

Iké Ugbo made his Roda JC debut as a half-time substitute in a 4-0 defeat to Volendam on Friday.

Italy

Mario Pašalić and Atalanta have another week to wait before Serie A gets underway.

Turkey

Victor Moses and Fenerbahce get their season started on Monday night.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter remains injured at Ross County.

Brazil

Nathan played the second half of Atlético-MG’s defeat at Atlético Paranaense.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
