The Loan Report: December 9-15

UEFA competition came up big for the Loan Army this week, as both Mario Pašalić and Kenedy found the back of the net.

Headliners

Pašalić has been especially impressive this season for an Atalanta team that are fast becoming many people’s darlings. Their 3-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, a match in which he scored the second goal, saw them make Champions League history in becoming the first team to qualify for the knockout stages having failed to record a win in their first four matches.

It led to a number of Chelsea fans wondering what the chances are that he comes back and challenges for a meaningful place in the squad next season, having now impressed in Spain, France, Italy and the Champions League. As things stand, Atalanta are expected to use their option to sign him permanently for €15m, a move Pašalić would be supportive of.

Things have been a little more comfortable for Getafe in the Europa League, and they too secured their place in the knockout rounds with a 3-0 win, theirs coming at home to Krasnodar on Thursday. Kenedy has found most of his playing time in Europe’s second competition, and came off the bench here for 22 minutes and his second goal of the season.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater was an unused substitute for Burnley.

Championship

Trevoh Chalobah returned from suspension to play 90 minutes in midfield for Huddersfield in a 1-1 draw at Wigan, who left Dujon Sterling on the bench after giving him just a matter of seconds in midweek against West Brom.

Conor Gallagher is one of the few players Charlton can rely upon at the minute; the decimated Addicks lost to Huddersfield and drew with Hull over the past seven days, and the Chelsea midfielder was on the pitch for every moment of each encounter, claiming an assist in the latter.

Matt Miazga played for Reading in their midweek draw at Barnsley but played no part against Stoke on Saturday after picking up a hamstring injury in training on Friday. He joins Izzy Brown and Jake Clarke-Salter in the treatment room.

League One

Richard Nartey continued at centre-back for Burton as they lost 2-0 to Wycombe, while there was no Luke McCormick for Shrewsbury Town.

Jacob Maddox has left Tranmere after playing just twice for them so far this season; his next move has already been lined up and will be confirmed ahead of the January transfer window as he seeks to kick-start his campaign.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
