The Loan Report: October 14-20

We’re back from October’s international break with a pair of Championship goals for you; one from a familiar source, one not quite so much.

Headliners

What a season it’s been for Conor Gallagher so far. A star in the second tier in his first few months in the adult game, he’s going from strength to strength for an upstart Charlton Athletic team, and might have saved his best moment for this weekend when he scored an absolutely blinding goal to round off a resounding 3-0 win over a Derby County team missing so many Chelsea connections from last season.

Quite understandably, manager Lee Bowyer can’t praise his young protégé enough:

About fifty miles away at Reading, Matt Miazga chose a fine time to score his first goal for the Royals when he thumped in the decisive strike against Preston, securing a 1-0 win in the eighth minute of added time at the Madejski Stadium.

Having been injured for most of September, it’s great to see the American back, and Reading’s fortunes will certainly be better for his presence in the team.

England

Premier League

Danny Drinkwater is no closer to playing for Burnley.

Championship

Trevoh Chalobah recovered from a knock that kept him out of England Under-21 duty last week to take his place in the Huddersfield Town team that played Blackburn Rovers live in front of the Sky TV cameras on Saturday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t one of his better performances, and he was substituted after 57 minutes.

Izzy Brown grabbed an assist in Luton’s 3-0 dismantling of Bristol City, revelling in his role at the top of a midfield diamond these days and slipping a through ball in for Harry Cornick to score, while Jake Clarke-Salter and Dujon Sterling remain on the outside looking in at Birmingham and Wigan respectively.

League One

Richard Nartey and Burton lost 4-1 to promotion-chasing Fleetwood on Saturday, but there was no playing time again for Luke McCormick or Jacob Maddox. Maddox is edging closer to full fitness after picking up an injury late in pre-season, while McCormick has fallen victim to the numbers game at Shrewsbury in midfield and has struggled for playing time since the August transfer deadline.

League Two

Josh Grant played the last three minutes of Plymouth’s 2-0 win over Carlisle.

Spain

Kenedy came off the bench to provide an assist for Getafe in their 2-0 win over Leganés, but Baba Rahman is still out injured at Mallorca.

Italy

Mario Pašalić played an hour for Atalanta at Lazio, leaving the pitch with his team 3-0 up, only to watch on as they failed to hold on and eventually drew 3-3.

Davide Zappacosta is out for the season at Roma with a cruciate ligament injury.

Germany

Lewis Baker was an unused substitute as Fortuna Dusseldorf beat Mainz, while Ethan Ampadu missed Leipzig’s draw with Wolfsburg due to a concussion suffered while on international duty with Wales.

France

Tiémoué Bakayoko played ninety minutes as Monaco beat Rennes 3-2.

Netherlands

Charly Musonda is officially out for (most of) the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for yet another problem with his knee. It means he’ll have missed almost two full seasons and, having turned 23 last week, it’s a terrible disappointment to see his career suffer in such a way.

Iké Ugbo was held scoreless as Roda drew 0-0 at Den Bosch, while Juan Castillo and Jong Ajax lost 3-2 at Jong AZ after discussing his long-term future this week.

Portugal

Lucas Piazon played the first half of Rio Ave’s 1-0 win at Condeixa in the Portuguese Cup.

Scotland

Nathan Baxter is finally close to making his comeback, and indeed debut, for Ross County, after it emerged that he was due to head up to Dingwall this past week. A minor flare-up curtailed that progress, as Chelsea wanted to continue treatment, but if all goes to plan he’ll head North in the coming days.

Turkey

Victor Moses returned to the Fenerbahce squad to face Denizlispor but remained an unused substitute.

Hungary

Danilo Pantic played the last twenty minutes as MOL Fehervar drew 0-0 at Mezőkövesdi.

Brazil

Nathan sat out Atlético’s 2-2 draw against Alagoano in midweek, then played all of their 2-0 win over Santos on Sunday.

Covid-19

Several league campaigns were curtailed earlier than expected due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Numbers for those players are assumed to be as of the formal end of that respective season; whether the stats officially count or not, we will take them as having happened.
